I'm sure everyone is going to love me after this post. Did you know that one hundred and eighty days from today is Christmas? Yep. For real. You'd better start making your list and giving it it's first check, because before you know what happened, it'll be right on top of you! Just like it did last year, and the year before that.
Can you believe it's nearly July? I know, everyone says it all the time, but it just seemed like it flew right by! We were just gearing up for Christmas, and now we're planning a July camp out and picnic. Wal-Mart is all decked out in the red, white and blue. What happened???
I know we're not supposed to wish our lives away, but I hope the summer goes by as quickly this year. I'm already tired of the heat. We are blessed to have nice, long spring time seasons here, but once the heat hits, it lingers interminably long. It's been hovering around 100 to 105 degrees here for the last few weeks, and we're in for it now until the end of September easy. I know, it's hotter in Phoenix. It's been in the one teens already. Or I could live in Death Valley or something, where it's probably nearing the boiling point by now, but knowing that doesn't make me any more comfortable here.
I'm just a fall/winter type person. I love the chill wind in the late summer that signals the end of the long, hot stretch. I love the many changing colors of the different trees. I love the falling leaves, even the piles of fallen ones. And the smells! The smell of autumn is indescribable! It's my very favorite thing! Then there are the smells I associate with fall. Things like cinnamon and nutmeg, apples cooking, pumpkin pie, maybe even the first fire of the year in the fireplace. How about the smell of fresh baked bread, turkey, and berry pies?
Then there is winter. I'm sure I romanticize it in my mind. I vaguely remember the long winters wearing on and on, but I also remember the crisp snap in the air. I love the looks of heavy frost on everything, especially those fallen leaves I mentioned before. I love the way a fresh snowfall covers everything with a clean blanket that quiets the whole world down. It almost seems like magic when it's falling. I remember the late winter when I was getting tired of the cold and the slush, when the first crocus of the year would push up through the snow.
Then the snow plows come and the cars drive by and the edges of the road turn into heaps of gray and brown sludge that outlast all of the rest of the snow. Yeah, yeah, reality check. But at least it took my mind off of the heat.
