  • Skin Deep

1st Peter 3v3-5: Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful.

I Love this Scripture. It takes me back to an arguement I had with some co workers a while back. One day I passed up my co worker and she said "I love your earrings...but...I wonder why you wear them if your a Christian."  I almost tripped on my face when she said that"What!?" I replied. Then she goes to say, "Well in the bible it says how women are'nt suppose to wear jewelry, so your not following the rules." To make matters worst, another chimed in and was like 'Yea, A.E. I thought you knew religion. Don't you got to church every Sunday? My mom and pastor told me that as well. So you need to take those off." Man I tried to keep my Christain composure but I exploded. (Mind you, these two both curse like a sailor, one is the biggest gosspier in the history of, has even said a two or thing about me, but I turned the other cheek TWICE, but throwing religion on me just went too far (forgive me for judging, Lord.) So I asked her what book or scripture it said it in, and she rudely said "I don't know. It's the one about the Philistines, but my church says it and I heard my Pastor saying it, and I am Presbyterean so I know it's right." That really got me heated, the fact that they, like among other Christains, and just people in general don't seek the facts about things, but just go for what they've heard, and throw what they've heard instead of what they know. So instead of getting krunk with them and telling them how religious they were and arguing back and forth, I should have let them know that they or their pastor took the scripture out of it's context.

God is not saying 'Hey, you got earrings on, your out.", He's saying don't let that be the objective that states who you are, but let your natural inner beauty be the objective, and the attraction. There are so many beautiful people in the world. Think of someone that you think is gorgeous. What makes that person gorgeous? Their look, or their attitude?   What if you met a celebrity you admired on screen because they were beautiful, but upon meeting them they looked at you like you were the ugliest thing ever created, and had the stinkiest attitude. That does'nt make them as beautiful as you thought they were, but if you met them, and they were down-to-earth, giving, and full of love, and enthusiasm, you would appreciate them for more than their looks, but the person they were. Beauties only skin deep is not just the Temptations hit ;), it is the way God intended. God's emphasis is always on the inner, not on the outer. This should help us to keep our minds focused, ladies, when dating, around friends, and just everyday life.

1st Samuel 16v6-7: When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed stands here before the LORD."

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

A woman should wear her inner grace on her sleeve for the world to see, if not it's just superficial. This applies to men, as well. I have personally encountered males where they looked Hot, but that was about it...lol. I'm just being real. That is a complete turn off for me. It's something about a guy with a big heart that is more appealing. Inner beauty is always beautiful.

What about your Beauty. Is it Skin Deep?

I love this post!!!! I come from an extreemly traditional church where this scripture and many more were taken litterally. The women were forced to wear skirts at all times, no earrings, makeup or jewlery of any sort.

I agree with you 100%. When your outward appearence becomes mor important to you than the fruits of the spirit on the inside it may be time to return to the basics but if you're not putting your earrings and makeup before God I don't think it should be an issue.

For them to "go there" on you like that and not know where to back it up only indicates that we need to give them mercy and pray for them.

hmmm...  very well put...  at one time i felt as God put me in a race that's very superficial...  as Corean, dating game is hard... it's like you have to be above average then some people... better if most... wither beauty on the outside, or some skill that no one mastered... i was blessed with non of those skills, or else i would ahve end up like some of them...  i've dated few girls, not becuz of their beauty, but what i think i saw in their heart... of course heart can change... lol...  i just ask God for someone like proverbs 31...

i see the beauty like this... it comes and it goes... like the picture below this post. i want to be like the old couple... they are well into their age, but they see inner beauty of each other, not the outside... and of course they love each other...  ^^ Proverb 31:31 say the beauty is fleeing...

Love this post! I agree with you, if those girls actually read the verse they would see it says "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes." It doesn't say "dont wear those." Your inner beauty should outshine anything you wear on the outside. Your jewelry should not be your sole source of beauty. :)

O my goodness! I know EXACTLY how you feel

I know some seventh day adventists who have similar beliefs, and once a blue moon try to convince me of them

but God said [in acts and 1Timothy ch.4 i believe] that there are certain specifics [like being selebant, circumcision, etc], and that 'let he who can accept it, accept it' and that 'God accepts them both'

But then it becomes a different story for those who 'accept' it, not because they have chosen to do so, but because they were basically born into it [their family does it]...so it becomes like a religious practice rather than a personal responsibility and covenant between you and God..

So i don't like when people try to argue that down with me.

Praise God my beauty comes from within...like for another example of specifics... i dont feel the need to wear make up, and i don't think i ever will...not that its a sin and that I condemn people for it, but its just a personal belief..its not for me, just like avacodos aren't for me-simple
