  • Who Does God Use?

    By Dan Dye

I absolutely love reading the Bible, not just because it is so full of love, truth, grace, mercy, and forgiveness. There is another thing I love about the Bible.

It's messy. Very messy. Page after page, story after story you can read about sinful, messy people that God uses to further His Kingdom.

And a few thousand years later, things haven't changed much.

God uses messy, imperfect people in messy, imperfect situations to accomplish His perfect will.

Think about Rahab in Judges 2. She is a prostitute on the edge of society. As the spies come into Jericho, who does God use to shelter them? The prostitute. Why didn't God use someone, you know, less messy? Less dirty? With less baggage? Surely there was a sweet elderly lady sitting in her home in Jericho that God could have used. That would've been less controversial. But God choose to use the messy prostitute.

Think about the early Church in Jerusalem. It was messy. Very messy. It was full of sinners -- liars, thieves  murderers, adulterers, prostitutes, gluttons, and the list goes on and on.

And a few thousand years later, things haven't changed much.

God is still using messy, imperfect people in messy, imperfect situations to accomplish His perfect will.

God doesn't always make sense, but He knows what He's doing. Will you allow Him to use you?

What other times in the Bible did God use imperfect people to complete His perfect will?  When has God used an imperfect person in your life to accomplish something amazing?  How has God been using you in the lives of others?

Actually God doesn't speak that much about sex.  When considering the size and number of texts, and, the texts left out, there isn't as much as we would love to see.  And the perfect example was the woman at the well.  Instead of families and congregations kicking people out for their sin, they could take an example.  Another example is how little energy God gives satan.  He's mentioned 17 times in the Bible.  How many times is God mentioned?  We give satan credit for our temptations, for our lust, for our ill behavior towards others, when in fact, it might just be that we ourselves are responsible for whatever mess we find ourselves in.  I used to hear entire sermons preached on satan, and people would shout out "Amen", and murmur in their seats.  When in fact, the sermons should have been about how we can use our behavior for the better, and take example from lessons learned in the Bible.

Ifyou truly desire to be of help, then God must be the inspiration.

My friend sent this this morning:

"Dear Father God, I pray that You will use me as Your instrument to carry out
some important mission of mercy for You. I know, Father, that if You are going
to use me, You will begin to shape me into the best possible instrument I can be
for the specific role You have created. Thank You, Lord. Help me to be a good
listener and not a judge as you send needy people my way. Work on my heart so I
have Your lenses. Let me be Your mouthpiece, Your hands, and Your feet in this
missional opportunity You are providing. I present these requests in the name of
the one who is pure love and who always said yes to minister to others, Christ
Jesus; and all God’s children say – AMEN!"
