Would You Let Your Child Attend a Seance?
By Naomi
It's that time of year again. The nights are darker, the temperature cooler, the leaves orangerer -- and everyone turns American and goes mad for Pumpkin Pie! Harmless fun? A bit of dressing up and apple bobbing probably never hurt anyone, but a séance aimed at primary school children? This is what is planned to happen in our town on Wednesday at our local community centre, a quote from our local paper says:"The community centre will be transformed into a haunted house for Hallowe'en, complete with poltergeists and other-worldly creatures. The bravest visitors will even get to conjure up spirits at a séance. The haunted house is aimed at primary school children."
Excuse me? Have you taken leave of your senses, Mr./Mrs. Community organiser person? At what point is it appropriate for 4-11 year olds to be offered the option of taking part in a séance? They may well miss Flopsy bunny who didn't quite make it through last Winter or wish they had just one more chance to tell Great Granny how lovely her kisses were, but no, you do not put on a séance at Hallowe'en for kids!
You may well be thinking, "It's not real, it's all a load of rubbish anyway, it'll just be special effects to give the kids a spooky night." That may well be the case and maybe I am unable to review the situation objectively. As a Christian, I believe in a good God and I am aware for me personally to take part in such activities would be wrong and dangerous, for if there is a God, there is surely a Devil, who likes nothing more than for us to believe he does not exist and is harmless.
Our town has been visited by the Devil already this year; back in February when our vicar was murdered. As the details are emerging in the same paper that has advertised the Halloween night, it becomes clearer to me that evil forces are prevalent in the world -- even our town. John 8:44 tells us how Satan has been a murderer from the beginning and is the father of lies. Here is a quote from the Gazette about Stephen Farrow who is accused of the murder of our vicar John Suddards and retired teacher Betty Yates:
"His mother had 'understood there to be something wrong with him as a child'. When he was ten, he set fire to a church altar and stood and watched as it burned. He was expelled on his first day of school, shot dead a male swan with an air gun and killed other people's pets when they 'did his head in'."
Dr Rogers a consultant forensic psychiatrist says "it was not possible to be sure when Farrow was telling the truth and when he was lying."
Still not convinced the Devil exists? How about the Jimmy Savile case that surely everyone is disgusted with at the moment? 2 Corinthians 11:14 tells us Satan disguises himself as an angel of light! That is almost a perfect description of Savile, almost untouchable because of the fear he spread and at the same time a national treasure for his massive contributions to charity and children's entertainment!
So, if anyone in Thornbury is brave enough to take their children to the community centre séance, let's just pray they don't conjure up Savile...
What do you think about this séance for kids? Do you think it is appropriate, or should the community planners have been a bit more cautious in their planning? Would you let your kids go?

I don't even need to read the article. The title alone...NO. I would not let my child attend a seance. Not a chance in...wait for it...HELL.
No, I would not. That's just asking for trouble.
There are enough experiences with Satan in our day to day lives without having to go knocking on his front door. There are other ways to teach our children to recognize the difference between good and bad spirits.
No. Once when my kids were young we went to a Halloween "Carnival" a local group put on to raise money for a charity. There was a "gypsy fortune teller" there, and since the carnival was for kids I let my daughter go, expecting the fortune teller to provide some fun kid type fortune. Well, turns out she pulled out some cards and gave my 8 yr old daughter a reading predicting that she'd get divorced! My daughter went through adolescence saying she'd never ever ever get married.
What was going through that woman's mind I cannot tell. The woman had three young daughters of her own! I'm all for keeping Halloween as a reason to dress as a fairy princess or cave man and get a lot of candy.
No, because I don't want my children to have any interest or belief in mysticism.
What do you think about this séance for kids? CANCEL IT.
Do you think it is appropriate, or should the community planners have been a bit more cautious in their planning? ABSOLUTELY NO! This is entirely inappropriate. I cannot offer any personal experiences of being a witness to a séance either for children nor for anyone else. However, I will give you one example of childhood traumas from supposed to be an "innocent" haunted house tour. I accompanied a young girl of nearly seven once. She was frightened from the beginning to the end of the tour. However, at the end of the tour, a ghoulish looking figure (a man it turned out), came at us with a "real" chain-saw. The saw was deafening, large, and very frightening. In fact, I suppressed a scream and instead yelled, also DEAFENINGLY, "TURN THAT OFF!" Jenny is now nearly 33. She still remembers the scene vividly. It traumatized her even though the man took off his mask and apologized. She never relates the fright to anything spiritual; fortunately, she is a strong Christian woman.
Would you let your kids go? NO WAY!
ya know I think this would do better in the parent forum. I'm pagan and would still say no...what the heck? lol
@eshunt - I went to a haunted house at my brother's school (he is 5) and man some of it scared me. My mom later told me that some of the kids were too scared to eat breakfast (haunted house was in the cafe.) The older kids were ok but man...why couldn't they just have age limits? 7 is pretty young for a scare like that!
@ccccourage@xanga - That is horrible! I mean I would have done something like "you will get really good grades and become a doctor!" Divorce though? Seriously?
@plursheep@xanga - What causes harm to a child must be wrong.
I imagine that a séance is harmful. Encouraging youngsters to contact spirits or pretend to do so is wrong, I think.
@plursheep@xanga - It is already on the Momaroo front page, as a matter of fact.
@eshunt - Agreed. While I don't think they are harmful in any way, I don't think it should have been done. A lot of pagans celebrate Samhain and covens will get together to remember those lost. Some of what covens do (like seances) they do not allow any children at just because it really isn't appropriate at all...just like scaring a 7 year old with a chainsaw. I myself would be pretty darn angry to hear that they were doing seances. That and its fall...wind blows...and if something fell because of a heavy breeze and a child believed that was a spirit, I imagine that could really mess them up in the head.
@sarahsmurfette@xanga - Right on. Must have missed it lol. Thanks
This probably shouldn't be in a religious discussion type of forum, because we all know what you are going to be told. That being said, the age group is too young for that kind of situation. People should be adults when they make those kinds of decisions. Most pagans, wickets, people of faiths other than jewish, christian, islam, etc., are much more harmless than what fundamentalists like to portray, nevertheless, I think a person should be of legal age to make these kinds of decisions, and should be encouraged by their parents to discuss said decisions and not be made to feel like they are evil for such participation. Sometimes it's a curiosity thing, just like sex.
@Pollypinks@xanga - wiccans* but yes. I mean I came out as pagan when I was 15. My mom, who is very Christian, is the first person I told (which was actually when I was 12.) Since mom accepted me at 15, I told everyone. Mom really helped me out. Since she believed that some things were evil, I didn't do them in her house. It was nice she allowed me to get my feet wet but did so in a way she felt was protecting me (like how you tell teens to wear condoms.) In the end I'm glad she does understand me because I like helping the community but its usually churches that feed the hungry. So I go out there and help clean up and make sure everyone is fed =]
I don't even have to read the full story to make up my mind. No way would I even entertain the idea of one of my children attending a seance. Ridiculous....
No, I don't even think haunted houses are appropriate for primary school children, and this is way beyond the pale. Not cool.
@plursheep@xanga - yes, not a place for children... we all seem to easily agree on that.
---
I retract the harmful comment.
The truth is, I have no experience and I needn't make a judgement on that.
Plurs, I think there are some truly evil people in our world. I think there are people in the occult who are driven by evil, impure things, and we don't want that influence in our lives or the lives of our children. Having said that, I think there are real misconceptions about how many pagan people believe. Not one person here would have to fear having their child in the same room as my Buddhist daughter. These people are so pacifistic I wish Christians would learn how to be less violent and vitriolic towards others. And we spend most of our time here discussing Christianity, well so, since the site is set up for that and most of us are Christians, but I've always had trouble with Christian churches who publish and hand out books to their members as to what Christian businesses are in the area, etc. Kind of like, I'm not going to love my Jewish neighbor and sully myself by giving him/her my business. I've never liked that approach. And how truly good at heart can we judge someone just by their label anyway? Christianity works for me, I know to whom I belong, but in order to show kindness and sharing, I need to tread the waters of others as well in the business world, as well as my neighbors.
@Pickwick12@xanga - Right? Growning up my school had a harvest festival which was basically harmless games like apple bobbing (on a string...not the entire school sharing a bucket of water) or using your hand to draw a turkey. I was a little shocked that an elementary school would be doing a haunted house.
Did not read.
No.
I thought this was on momaroo. I held my first seance at 7, so I'd be a hypocrite to not let them. I would go with them and make sure it either wasn't too realistic or it wasn't made to certain standards but if she/they wanted to go, I'd let them. I would try to teach her the difference with what they do and how it's done seriously and I'd try to make it educational but still all in fun.
My friends and I used to do that all the time for shits and giggles. My mother would sometimes join in and purposely try to scare us. For the most part it's all in good fun. If I had children I'd let them do it.
