This week there will be a Halloween party at my son's public school kindergarten class and then the kids will be joining together in a Halloween parade through town on a school day. But, I'm sure that before celebrating Halloween, the teachers are going to warn parents and children of the risks of kiddie-occult involvement, as had been highlighted by Peter Smith, Britain's general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers:'Children must be protected from the more extreme influences of the occult and be taught in a responsible and positive way the risks of journeying into the unknown,' he had said. ...The premiere of Harry Potter the movie will lead to a whole new generation of youngsters discovering witchcraft and wizardry. We welcome the values this will ingrain, focusing on good triumphing over evil. Though it is important not to over-react to this entertaining phenomenon, the risks are clear.' Gallup polls on the subject are rare, but do show a growing interest in occult related subjects over time.
As school teachers have had time to warn children and parents to try and keep Fluffy inside the house during the Halloween season, there is some hope that animal abductions, mutilations and sacrifices will be minimal this year, varieties of which are described in a Washington Post column: "We found bodies of cats that had been pretty inhumanely slain, badly treated, pretty much slaughtered or used for sacrificial purposes." These types findings around the country help to explain why many animal shelters refuse to allow cat adoptions around Halloween. As a short school history lesson, it could be noted that the US Supreme Court ruled in 1993 that ritual animal sacrifice is a legal form of religious expression with regard to a case in Florida and as practiced by occults such as Santeria. Well, actually, don't count on any kind of negative vibe projected by public schools during Halloween, that would be so un PC and that negativity should definitely be saved for Christ and Christmas when no hint of Christianity is to be allowed. But this does bring up a legal question. Should Halloween be celebrated in public schools? As Peter Smith had noted, kiddie-occult literature can open the door to help lead children down a dark path. These are simply some of the effects of occult-filled novels and films. There are also public schools, such as Waldorf-method schools, that officially and actively teach New Age and occult-based philosophies. Should these types of practices be legal? It boils down to a question of constitutionality. 1. Halloween is a celebration that highlights aspects of evil and themes such as witchcraft.
2. Most scholars believe that All Hallows' Eve was originally influenced by western European harvest festivals and festivals of the dead with pagan roots, particularly the Celtic Samhain. 5. The official policy of "separation of church and state" is supposed to apply to all religious beliefs.
6. According to this interpretation of the Constitution, if any religious beliefs are promoted in class, all should have an equal opportunity.
7. According to actual school policies, Christian teachers are not allowed to talk about why they believe in God in public schools.
8. Paganism and evil, however, are discussed and even celebrated in public schools.
9. Therefore, the celebration of Halloween in public schools and the free discussion of paganism and witchcraft represent unconstitutional discrimination. I personally don't endorse popular interpretations of Constitutional separation of church and state, however, if we are supposed to be following this precept, then it should be followed fairly. Why is it then that, as the occult and evil become more pronounced in society, paganism and witchcraft may be freely discussed in US public schools as positive influences while all God talk is expressly forbidden and portrayed as negative? If there is indeed a separation of church and state, then why isn't there a separation between the occult and state? Actual practices by public schools represent an unconstitutional breech of civil liberties. According to US policies, public schools are supposed to maintain religious neutrality:
"Second, the government may not establish religion: that is, the government may not endorse, sponsor, or require participation in any particular religion or religious activity. Public schools must maintain their religious neutrality so that all students of any religion, or no religion, can enjoy freedom of belief."
I've lived for a number of years in Ukraine as a missionary where the church and state do not allow for the celebration of Halloween in public schools. They do, however, allow the discussion of religious ideas and beliefs in school. I was able to talk to students there about the true history of the United States and the religious beliefs of the Puritans, for example, when it came time for the Thanksgiving holiday. In the US I have been quite disappointed by the situation in the public schools. Though I do appreciate the "7 Habits" approach at the Southampton SES, the influences of the public kindergarten my son attends disturb me almost on a weekly basis, regarding everything from age-inappropriate topics in class to increased aggressive behavior. The attached photo from Southampton Patch shows school kids in a town Halloween parade in 2011. Our family is planning to skip the parade and join a few other Christian families to do some fun things and to also celebrate the goodness of God. We have no interest in alternative harvest parties and the like.
Though I realize there are alternatives to public school and the constant barrage of negative influences, our family doesn't presently have funds for a private school and my wife does not feel that home schooling is realistic for her. More and more, I feel like Lot who was "vexed" in his spirit by what he saw around him in society. Who knows, it may be that one day we will move back to Ukraine. Some things are more important than just the "standard of living" that people have come to praise in the US. And, if the US dollar crashes as many people believe it will, then the American dream will have a rude awakening, or what's left of it at least.
I had seen the documentary film IndoctriNation last year and my Ukrainian wife didn't believe me when I warned her about the influences of US public schools. But now she is already quite concerned and more open to various options. Cal Thomas (America’s most widely syndicated op-ed columnist) discussed the situation of public schools, as outlined in the documentary:
"Every Christian parent with a child in a government school should see this [movie] and be forced to confront their unwillingness to do what Scripture requires for the children on loan to them by God. A mass exodus from government schools is the only way to preserve the souls and minds of our children."
On "All Souls Day" maybe we Christians should not dwell on the souls of the dead but should consider the souls of the living, and especially our children's souls as approach these types of challenges.
Based on the information presented, do you think Halloween should be promoted in public schools? What has been your experience celebrating Halloween? Do you plan to celebrate Halloween this year?

I'm going to guess, but please correct me if this is wrong, but the OP is of the opinion that Halloween is a religious celebration. Sure, it may have its roots in old Euro pagan festivals, but I don't it's religious to most. Furthermore, there isn't a ton of good evidence that the occult is truely a powerful (ie, real) set of beliefs. Put another way, I don't know of any true wizards that can do magic. Take all that together and I don't think Halloween is a bad thing. Just a fun holiday.
You make a lot of good sense here, sir, which is exactly what government-led education and most programs try to restrict. Have you shown this article to your son's kindergarten principal? My wife and I live in Japan and we will surely homeschool our children. No question about it.
Yes Halloween should be in public school. It is a fun cultural holiday/ritual of our culture.
If you can't keep your kids from joining some cult, or if you raise kids that feeble-minded in the first place, then it's your failing as a parent - don't try and change the governmental decisions around it for everyone else.
Leave it up to the member of a violent cult that believes in zombies and practices the ancient Bronze Age ritual of eating flesh and drinking blood to try to restrict a fun and frivolous public holiday! Christians really are a bunch of losers.
My children didn't even have halloween parties....I, myself, don't celebrate halloween...On that day, we have the porch light off, and the shades closed.....
I'm a devoted Christian and although some of the history of how Halloween happen is obscure..the way it's celebrated is what makes it sin. Nothing in the bible says you can't wear costumes, ask for candy or have a party that is strictly pure. So will I celebrate..yes I sure will! People get legalistic with things, but not for what really matters...is it sin? People have sex before marriage, curse, hurt each other, hurt God, but freak out over celebrating halloween? It doesn't make sense. So many can make a big deal out of it..but I'll wear a costume. :)

I too was disappointed that Harry Potter, Dungeons and Dragons and various other pagan entertainments taught me nothing about witchcraft, ritual sacrifice, immoral behaviours and the like. Just a bunch of garbage about friendship and working together to triumph over hatred and despair.
...what are we talking about? Halloween.
I dunno, Halloween's about as religious as Boxing Day.
Our family does not participate in Halloween.. our son is in SK, and yes we allow him to get dressed up to go to school on the day.. I do not think that he should be left out of those kinds of activities.. but we have told him no trick or treating. Our reasons are largely based on the fact that he can't have chocolate and I had some bad experiences growing up.. so when all the stuff goes on sale I do buy treats that he can have for his lunches/snacks at school.
Halloween hasn't been a religious holiday for centuries. It's just a fun day for kids to dress up in costume and get candy. But leave it to the zealots to demonize it and turn it into something evil. Your hearts really must be the blackest of all.
I could be wrong, but aren't people who are involved with the occult into it year round and Halloween is just another commercial holiday to them? More concerned about A-holes driving drunk or pedophiles taking advantage of the trick or treating tradition than marginalized religious groups trying to sacrifice my dog.
If you really have issues with this, you CAN homeschool. "My wife doesn't feel it's realistic for her..." If you care enough, it will become a reality.
Interesting post. I think celebrations of Halloween and similar holidays fly under the radar because there's hardly anyone that takes them seriously (in a religious sense). Really though, this sort of thing is going to happen. If your kids go to a major secular university, you can expect them to be exposed to celebrations of Sukkot, Ramadan, Vesak, and plenty of others- usually with a friendly nod (if not a full-blown sanctioned campus celebration) from uni admin. Halloween will just be the holiday that students dress immodestly and drink a lot.
OP- did you read the entire Washinton Post article? This feline abuse appears to have been a one-time event in the early 1990's. I'm sure there's fringe wackos out there, but in my studies of the occult and neopaganism there is no precedence for cat sacrifices. The Wiccan interviewed for the article appears just as bewildered at the news as anybody else might have been. Just because witches are associated with black cats, doesn't mean they sacrifice them- or tabbys, or calicos, or persians... Speaking in sheer logical terms, a reference to a 13-year-old article that references a then 6-year-old animal abuse case of unestablished intent, seems a bit sensationalist since your post is (am I right?) really about public schools promoting a quasi-religious holiday. I'm not trying to say you should celebrate halloween. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy and learn from the article. What I am saying, is that our references and background info ought be perhaps more clearly linked with what we're communicating.
Good luck protecting your children from everything under the sun. I promise that no matter how desperately you try to shelter them, they will either rebel or end up batshit crazy and sheltered just like their parents.
Warm greetings from "down the dark path". We have candy and fun costumes here.
So, I take it you don't consider Christmas a religious holiday either?I mean... Christmas isn't just celebrated in schools, the entire school calendar is built around it.
Well, October 31 is also Reformation Day, so your child can dress up like Martin Luther and carry around a piece of paper for the 95 Theses and a plastic nail and hammer
I am fairly devout to my faith. But, I also enjoy Halloween because it's a fun time to get dressed in a silly costume and do fun things. I'm a creative and crafty person, so I enjoy Halloween for those reasons. I think of it like how atheists 'celebrate' Christmas or Easter as a family gathering opportunity, but they won't actually recognise and celebrate their Christian backgrounds (and yes, I know about their pagan origins). You 'forget' the religious background and voila - commercial day of whatever fun shenanigans is usually done that day.
Okay, to the original post: If you have that much of an issue of your child participating in a school Halloween party, then you should take him out of school for that half-day. When I was a child, I had a friend who was Jehovah's Witness. Her mother took her out whenever we had our Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines parties. The mother and my friend never made a stink about it - they just quietly left and had fun at a park or Laser Quest instead. And, to be honest, I was a bit jealous of my friend going to Laser Quest - I thought the costume parades and stale Valentines cards were so boring :P
Halloween may have started out evil or religious or whatever. But I don't care. We do not celebrate it that way now. I know NO ONE who thinks of the evilness or the history. We take our kids trick-or-treating. There is nothing evil about dressing my toddler up in a lady bug costume. Halloween has transformed into candy, pumpkins, and cartoon characters. Sure, you have the weirdos who put skulls in their yard and skeletons on their door but most of them are still harmless.
Don't be the obnoxious parents who won't let their kids celebrate the class Halloween party (consisting of cupcakes, pumpkins, fun games..)
@NotWhereIThought@xanga - too right you are. But only in recent is it a fun holiday for kids. The way I personally explain it to non pagans is a "Day of the Dead for Pagans." See my comment that I will/ have posted.
I am a proud Wiccan/ Pagan. And quite frankly people like you offend me... "Protect children from the Occult?"
Really do you care who you offend? Halloween... ACTUALLY SAMHAIN! Is quite an important Sabat to us as you would probably say "Occult Followers" or "Sinners."
It not only marks the Celtic New Year, to pagans as everything is dying and moving into a winter/ remission state, to be reborn after Yule, but it is also when the line between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead is thin.
It's a "Day of the Dead" for Pagans, to honor loved ones past on to the Summerlands.WHICH is something the Christians stole from the Pagans.
The reason costumes are worn, or originally were worn is for two reasons actually; One- to scare off the evil spirits. And two to hide the identity of the Wiccan/ Pagan in the circle from the bad spirits.
So on your "Religious Neutrality" Argument- Halloween really has
NOTHINGto do with Samhain other than the fact kids get dressed up for Halloween. It is a fun thing for the kids to get dressed up scary or cute.
What about your Christmas? I am sure if they decided to teach that in school you'd be all for that. Well did you know Christmas is based off another "Occult" holiday called Yule?
Why dont you check all of your history before attacking a particular holiday! Especially one so important.
So to answer your closed minded question. YES! It should be in public schools BUT as the fun that it is. Kids get dressed up, and get candy (But as a health nut, it's the parents responsibility to moderate the intake of candy to their children)
AND YES I will be celebrating it this year. While you are hidden in the dark in a corner of your house in fear of offending your god or something, as your doorbell rings and you stiffing children of candy, I will be honoring my loved ones passed on, then celebrate the coming of the new year. And I will teach my children this (when indeed I have children).
Yes! Thank you! I wrote an article on this internalized secularism a few weeks ago: http://dounoe-themuffinman.xanga.com/767473572/bringin-religion-back-my-rant-on-internalized-secularism/
take a look and let me know what you think, I would love to hear your thoughts.
Public schools celebrate Halloween because it is part of American culture. If you have a problem with Halloween, then don't celebrate it. After all, as a Christian, there are a lot of things that you won't do because they go against your moral beliefs, regardless of whether everyone else around you thinks it's okay.
My parents didn't want me to celebrate Halloween so they excused me from the parade and party at school. Now that I'm older, I see Halloween as just another commercialized holiday.
I feel like this is a really biased post, especially because you want us to post our opinions based on the information that YOU gave us (which supports your view). I don't think Halloween is a big deal at all. The majority of people who celebrate Halloween do not practice witchcraft, celebrate evil, etc. The people who do those things would do so whether or not Halloween was celebrated. People make way too big of a deal about it... It's an innocent holiday where people can dress up and have fun. That's all.
Well, that was silly. You can't walk two steps on a public street in December without having 'teh baby jezuz' blasted in your face, but you're worried that a non-religious holiday is celebrated in schools.
Pro-tip - if you're thinking of homeschooling your children for religious reasons, you're in a cult. Get out.

@uru_n_imi@xanga - Public schools celebrate Halloween because it is part of American culture. If you have a problem with Halloween, then don't celebrate it.
- That was not an option at my kid's kindergarten. As the post explains, there was a town Halloween parade the kids were to March in. The kids were to spend a week making costumes in school. Hurricane Sandy, however, changed all that. At least one good thing came out of the hurricane.
