In the wake of this week's vice-presidential debates, a new wave of memes have come out on Facebook. Although I usually roll my eyes at the overly-simplified worldviews that most of these memes espouse, as well as the fact that most memes can easily be disproved with simple logic, one meme really caught my ire:
There are three major reasons I dislike this meme.
1. It increases the stereotype that Christians think Republicans are from God and that Democrats are evil. I go to a secular university, and most of my friends are liberal. When I try talking about the Gospel, the first thing that usually comes up is "That means you are Republican, right?" I wince at that. I am Republican, but I do not equate my beliefs with Republicanism. What my friends mean is that they see Christians as the mercenaries of the Republican Party, or that Christians believe that Democrats are heathens and that Republicans are sent from God.
I hate this stereotype, because I don't think it's true. I don't agree with the Republican Party on every issue, and I don't think that it is ordained by God. But this meme plays directly into the stereotype that the world sees Christians as being, because it is stretching a Bible verse to make it apply to a candidate that Christians don't personally like. It also makes Christians look like they are using their faith for political gain, by personally attacking a candidate.
2. It ignores Romans 13.Paul writes in Romans 13:1-2 (ESV):
"Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment."
We live in a country that allows great freedom of speech. But Christians are called to a higher standard than the regular banter and rhetoric of politics. If someone made a meme that quoted Biden's un-Christian stance on say, abortion, and then said that he or she wouldn't vote for him, I would have no issue with that. But this meme is a personal attack, presuming that the Bible (and therefore God) says Biden is a fool and that Ryan is a wise man. Biden is our current vice president. He is a God-given authority and needs to be respected, even if we disagree with him.
3. It's not really even logical. If this meme was brilliant, I might give it some more leeway, but it really isn't. It's just another standard name-calling screed, cloaked in holiness. In the end, whether or not the meme is true just comes down to personal opinion. About half of Americans thought that Biden won the debate. If half of Americans thought that a fool won, does that mean that they are fools too? What if I thought that Ryan came across as a fool? Does that make me a fool? Can we objectively call anyone a fool? What about Jesus's warning in Matthew 5:22?
In the end, I have to ask, is this meme helping or hurting the cause of the Gospel? Are we making others more or less open to God's Word when we apply it to a political agenda? Everything we do should be for the advancement of the Gospel. Does this help? Based on what my unsaved friends think about Christianity and what this meme would imply to them, I know the answer!
What do you think about this internet meme? What do you think it says about Christians? Was the creator of the image correct in his or her judgment of the situation? Why or why not? What can we as Christians do to better convey the Gospel?

I'd say that you may be attributing this to mean that Joe Biden is a fool and that Christians think so. At the time of the "debate," Mr. Biden was being disrespectful and not conducting himself properly as a debater, and for his purposes it looked foolish. In that situation, the proverb holds true - for Christian and non Christian alike - there was nothing to be gained in arguing with a person acting foolishly.
I had someone the other day (who had never encountered me on this forum) assume that I was a right-wing extremist republican because of my username, quest4god. Now, is that my fault or is it an instance of stereotyping by the other person? I don't think we should "wince" at the inference that we are Christians or that we believe that Christ is the Way to God. It is our message and our heritage. The misunderstandings come when we substitute our philosophy for our gospel, or when the other person only "hears" with his own prejudices (which we should not encourage). I believe that we should not take credit for our "good" deeds or fail to attribute our hope of heaven to God Himself.
I don't know if the creator of this meant it to actually convey the gospel or if they meant it to be amusing. I personally just find it funny. I think adding more weight to it than just for a quick joke is taking a quote from the bible out of context and it does make christians look bad. Even if the author/creator thinks it is fitting in a serious manner, perhaps they should think about how it makes their group (christians) as whole look before posting it as "profound" or something to that effect.
The Democrat Party platform advocates abortion, which is genocide of the unborn. The Democrat Party advocates the redistribution of wealth which is stealing.
The Bible teaches against murder and stealing.
The Democrat Party advocates gay rights, which the Bible teaches is unethical and immoral.
The Democrat Party advocates Progressivism. Progressivism centers around the belief that man is essentially good and that he needs government to provide him with the right living environment so that he can be saved.
That goes against the Bible which teaches that man is prone to sin, is able to reason out right from wrong and that only Jesus can save mankind.
Quoting the Bible in the face of such clearly defined evil is good and necessary.
You bring up some valid points. First you shouldn't look at yourself as a republican, especially if you believe that Christ's kingdom comes first. You may vote republican, but you need to weigh each candidate and their beliefs with the word of God. Second, don't be ashamed when someone says 'You're a republican aren't you'. State that while the majority of republican hold your same beliefs, it is the person running and not the party they are running under that matters.
As the person above stated, it's a Proverb. They hold true for everyone. God likes to call me out in the Proverbs. Am I to ignore them because they make me feel bad? Should I hide them because it will make someone else feel bad about themselves? Christianity is not popular. It's hard. People will not understand. It's God who will open and close their hearts, we just need to sow those seeds.
You stated that you would have no problem if it was about abortion. Why? Why is it ok to apply the Bible to abortion and not to the actions of one of the candidates? Are we allowed to pick and choose what parts of the Bible we want to follow and decide that the other parts we don't care for are free to be ignored? If you watched the debate and you have debated before, you know this verse holds true. Just like the verse that tells me to love my neighbor.
@Milkshakeed - Those are some good points! But claiming the Proverbs verses apply to Biden is highly subjective. One can objectively state what Biden's views are on abortion and criticize them without attacking him personally, but it's mostly political bias that would lead to him being called a fool. I watched the debate, and despite my right-leanings, realized that my interpretations of his mannerisms are subjective. the Bible may be absolute, but there's no way to apply this verse to him in an absolute way.
If he behaved like a fool, then a verse about foolish behaviour applies to him. The meme is probably annoying and largely unhelpful (as most memes are), but its still no less true b
I think the Proverb is funny and true, especially when applied to Biden, but I did not post that on my own Facebook or Xanga because I think you are right and it might be disrespectful and cause others to have a negative view of Christians. Even though I am voting Republican and for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan. We need to treat others the way we would want to be treated.
@Milkshakeed - The political party does matter.
The Democrat party advocates gay marriage and abortion, for example. So any Democrat candidate who claimed to oppose gay marriage and abortion would be a liar since dissent on gay marriage and abortion are not allowed in the Democrat party.
Also, though a particular candidate may differ with party philosophy, it is the party that sets the governing agenda and policy mix.
So a vote for a Democrat candidate, no matter his stated beliefs, is a vote for the overall party platform.
There are many ways to be foolish, both sides have them covered.

So you are the stereotype and dont think that stereotype is true O_o well thats just silly. Also just because your friends dont believe the way you do dosent make them unsaved, but by you saying that makes you less good in your gods eyes. I was told that christians are suppose to love others and not judge them because thats your gods job. You say your a christian but you dont act like it, and you shouldnt talk about the gospel to others unless you know they are christian and they want to talk about it thats just rude.
