"I see a generation
rising up to take their place,
with selfless faith..."
I didn't write these words, a talented worship leader did, and while they were referring to a slightly older generation (as the song was penned in 2006) they still have a resounding truth today.
I am a youth leader, and having just returned from our annual weekend away, I can confirm that there is a generation rising.
God is moving and speaking to our our young people in a very real and big way.
They are inspired to stand out, to have a voice, to make a difference.
They have BIG faith.
They are an example.
Not only to their peers, but to their families, their leaders, their churches.
They teach me things about God that I've never considers. They engage in worship in a way that I didn't understand at that age. They ask questions and provide perspective.
1 Timothy 4:12 tells our young people;
"Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity."
And I believe it.
I believe they are stepping up.
I believe they are taking their place.
I believe they are shining like stars.
They are a generation rising.
And I can't wait to see what's next.

My wife and I are raising our kids to be more religious than we were. We are reclaiming our Christian roots. All this is a start. Maybe the next generation will be better than us -- this is my kind of hope and change.
People in churches have been singing these kinds of songs since at least the mid or early '90s. Those youth who were first sung about as a generation rising up are now risen-up adults. I see them stepping into the mission field, into ministries, and so on. Sadly, I also see them stepping out of church, out of faith, into homosexuality, into porn, into bad relationships, drugs, doubt and disbelief, so on and so on. There are very few people of any generation who walk the straight and narrow path of Christ, even if hordes attended churches at one time and had songs of hope and prophecy sung over them. Even the ones who do go on to do mighty and groundbreaking works for Christ often face incredible opposition from fellow Christians. Andrew Marin is a prime example. Many of the Christian trailblazers I admire most are of older generations. Paul Washer, Francis Chan, and others are like my heroes. Is this newest generation the one that's rising up to be some amazing kind of Christian? I don't know. But I believe God is raising up a group of people of all ages and nationalities who hear His voice and respond accordingly no matter what the cost. We need to stop thinking of the word "generation" in merely social or biological terms. I think "generation" is more like a people who are reborn together of the same Father who hear His voice and go in the same direction.
Sounds like a rehash of the "born again" syndrome. To praise one generation of youth is to imply that previous generations of youth were lacking in some way. Whether the natural enthusiasm of youth is temporaly focused on one thing or the other is neither here nor there. How they are as mature adults will be the mark as to whether whatever it was that excited them actually took root. Youth likes to fit in, a lot more than adults do. Each group shows their "allegiance" by words, acts, the clothing worn and last but not least by any measure, their music. Fundamentalist Christian youth groups are no different. I've been to "Christian" raves. Thier no different in any way form any other youth music rave.
How timely. Today I thought about that very line in that Hossana song and I wondered what that means exactly and whether the new generation is really rising. thank you.
