  • Why Not Evolution?

    By Eowyn

Georgia Congressman Paul Broun has denounced evolution, embryology and the Big Bang Theory (the scientific theory, not the sitcom) as "lies straight from the pit of Hell."

I'm not sure what Broun's credential's as a "scientist" are, but I do know the Bible pretty well. Let me put forward this quote:

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
    Romans 12-2

God loves the "renewal" and education of the mind. We know that with each generation we grow more educated and more aware of the way the universe works. Five centuries ago we believed that the world grew in 6 days of creation. Now we know that the world and the universe formed over the course of billions of years. In the future who knows what we will discover.

Why is evolution any less wondrous than the creation of the world in 6 days? Whether the majesty of our existence came into being in 6 years or 6 billion years does not matter, it was formed into being from a source that even the most brilliant scientists cannot quite figure out. We do not deny the existence of God by examining the mechanics with which He brought forth life. Evolution is God's tools, and the more we accept that the more we can learn and improve our own lives here on this Earth according to His plan.

When a man denounces the theory of evolution, he spits in the eye of God. Evolution was the tool by which God brought forth life -- and the more we study it the better we are able to understand and respect God. God has given us great gifts of intelligence and through intelligence we are able to prolong lives of our children and give hope to the suffering. We need to continue to study science if we want to save more lives and end more suffering in the future.

When we turn away from science, we denounce God and throw back the gifts of intelligence that He has given us. I, for one, refuse to do that. I will continue to study evolution and the big bang theory -- for such gifts of science are from God. Only unfounded denunciations of evolution and medical science come from the pit of Hell.

Do you think it's possible that God created evolution?  Do you think the study of evolution could help us understand God better?  Why not evolution?
