The Bible Doesn't Matter
I hope my title piqued your interest. I have been listening to sermons by Greg Boyd recently. He is the pastor at Woodland Hills Church. One thing He says over and over when discussing theology is, "You don't get life from the Bible, you get life from Jesus." That is a very profound statement.Too often, Christians argue over theology, doctrine, etc. These things matter. The tradition I have been raised in does matter, but I'm guilty of thinking too highly of my personal theology than I should. There really are contradictions of fact in the Bible. I promise they are there. They don't add up to great theological problems as much as some would think, but they should still be discussed.
The very beginning of Mark holds one such contradiction.
Mark 1:1-3:
1"The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a] the Son of God,[b](B) 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”
3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”So this doesn't seem out of the ordinary at first. It's a quote from Isaiah -- or is it! The weird thing is the Bible says "as it is written in Isaiah", but the quote is actually from Malachi ("Prepare the way..." is from Isaiah though). The Bible misquotes the Old Testament. If the Bible was a research paper it would get some points taken off.
There are other "contradictions" as well. They are mostly discrepancies in the order of things between the gospels -- for instance, the two creation accounts, the order of events at Jesus' baptism, and what happened when the tomb was found empty.
I'm not bringing this up to say we can't take the Bible seriously. You should take the Bible seriously. I bring this up to explore the reasons why contradictions like these don't really matter. I do believe the Bible is inspired by God. I also believe that the description of facts doesn't make the Bible inspired. The Bible is inspired because the ideas and thoughts and theologies add up to a picture of God that is worthy to be worshiped and followed. We get life from Jesus not from the Bible.
These issues become unimportant when we remember that the Bible doesn't give us life. When we remember what gives us life (Jesus) it allows us to openly engage and discuss deep and hard theological issues. My hope is that the Christian community could engage issues openly and honestly. Not so we can prove each other right or wrong, but so we can all come together as one body to learn deeper biblical truths. Because the Bible does actually matter. It matters a great deal.
Do you feel like the Bible has become a crutch for Christians to use as they please to support their arguments? What do you think about the contradictions that exist in scripture? What role should scripture play in our lives?

Very well said, Trav. I don't think the Bible was ever intended to be historical. Some of it is, I'm sure, but that isn't what makes it scripture. What makes it scripture is that the Holy Spirit speaks through it. The Bible on its own is lifeless. We can't forget who we worship.
I have to agree that too many people argue over doctrine and forget about the teachings of Jesus. Most people I know have turned to athiesm that way. Thanks for posting this. =)
Unfortunately, I don't think most Christians read the Bible often enough for it to be a crutch. But that doesn't keep many from picking their favorite (often out of context) scriptures to throw in your face. While there are many Christians who are searching actively for truth and Jesus, there are many who are only trying to justify their own personal theology.
The scriptures are the word of God, but they can only be understood with the help of the Holy Spirit, since He will bring us to all truth as fast as we prepare ourselves to receive it. But since the Bible by itself is interpreted in many different ways, and since a loving God said that the truth would be established by two or three witnesses, I believe that He has provided us with access to scripture that He has given to other people and is not part of the Bible as an additional witness. Many lines may be drawn through a point, but only one line can be drawn between two points.
That's a vastly poor handling of Mark 1:1-3. If you're interested in taking a more accurate and detailed look into this question you can follow the link to this article on Mark 1:1-3. There are additional resources to acquire a better handle on such issues as you're alluding too. Although it has become popular to discredit the scripture as full of contradictions/discrepancies, that is a most faulty stance to take. According to the early English and German translations all the way up to the KJV and the NKJV, that passage reads "from the prophets", not "from Isaiah the prophet".
Your pastor is correct that life comes from Jesus Christ through the working of the Holy Spirit by faith, but, let me ask you, where do you receive faith? If you accept the Holy Scriptures answer, you'll remember Romans 10 tells us that we receive faith by hearing the Word of God.
You cannot discount the Word of God in receiving life. It is actually a necessary part of your salvation. Having the written text itself is not, but having the true and accurate Word of God is.
I had a choir director that attended a meeting each week with me. It was in my first Presbyterian church, and he had always been a Catholic, until about 10 years ago. We'd get into our Bible study, before we'd discuss the ill, and others in need. One week he'd had enough of our going over scripture endlessly, and he tossed his Bible onto the middle of the table and said "This is getting ridiculous." "You can read and argue this until you die, but it's all about Jesus and what he did for us." At the time I thought he was simplistic, but the older I get, the more I realize that there are so many interpretations out there, maybe we ought to set aside our study a little bit and give our lives to Christ.
@dustysojourner@xanga - The original Greek manuscripts have "Isaiah" quoted in Mark.
The Word of God as used in scripture is never referring to itself. When the Bible says "Word of God" it is talking about Jesus. The word of God is scripture - the Word of God is Jesus. So Paul is merely saying we receive faith by hearing Jesus - not the Bible. Their wasn't a New Testament canon when Paul was writing.@crevis05@xanga - We do not have the "original Greek manuscripts", only copies of the copies. You are referring to the copies that make up the sources that are used in your version, like the NIV. However, 92% of the 5,664 Greek manuscripts that we have are contained in the Textus Receptus (TR), and those texts do not all have the word "Isaiah".
You're making very flawed assumptions based on very flawed understanding and I encourage you not to do that.
For example, a blanket statement like ""The Word of God as used in scripture is never referring to itself" is extremely erroneous. A very elementary survey of the NT would reveal that the phrase "Word of God" is used in Romans 10:17-18 in reference to the spoken and/or written words that make up "scripture".
I encourage you to study this further. I've studied these issues and they are rarely as "easily defined" as may skeptics would have you believe.
@dustysojourner@xanga - Actually when Erasmus wrote the Textus Receptus, he had only 7 manuscripts of the New Testament. It didn't even include all of what's written so he had to translate some of it from Latin. This is what Erasmus had to say about the Greek that he put together, "But one thing the facts cry out, and it can be clear, as they say, even to a blind man, that often through the translator’s clumsiness or inattention the Greek has been wrongly rendered; often the true and genuine reading has been corrupted by ignorant scribes, which we see happen every day, or altered by scribes who are half-taught and half-asleep."
The verse in Roman actually is word of Christ, not word of God.
@crevis05@xanga - The verse in Romans is not actually "Word of Christ". It is Word of God. If you look at Eerdmans Bible Dictionary or a variety of solid resources you'll see that it is listed alternatively as Word of God. The reason NASB translates it as Word of Christ is, as it has in the footnote as well, because the meaning in the text is the "Word which concerns Christ", and, as Jesus Himself said, that even includes all the Law and Prophets.
Regarding KJV, how much of this have you actually looked at yourself? Or are you just googling this information favorable information for yourself? I know what you're saying about Erasmus, but that is far from an extensive explanation of how the KJV was completed. Look into the history of the KJV a bit more and you'll find a more exhaustive approach was taken then what you're representing. But I'm not going to sit here and explain what would take you years to study completely.
Anyway, if you're determined to believe as you want, go ahead, but I'm just saying that your blanket statements made are well refuted by many scholars, even among non-religious scholars. And you're simply stating it as if there is no other side to the story, which is a deceptive way of stating this.
