Christian Owned Businesses and Politics: Eat Mor Chikin Edition
By The Closet Calvinist
As you’ve probably heard by now, the popular Chicken franchise, Chick-fil-A is in a bit of hot water lately. It seems they, being a Christian owned business that is known for not being open on the Lord’s Day, hold a biblical view on homosexuality and gay marriage. Why anyone is shocked to see that a company that doesn’t open on Sundays because of their Christian beliefs holds to a biblical view of marriage is beyond m
They are being boycotted by many who support what they call “marriage equality.” I won’t touch on the gay marriage issue in this post, other than to make it clear that I agree with the bible that homosexuality is a sin.
What is interesting, however, is to think about the roles of businesses and their owner’s political views being a matter of public concern. Not that this is a new phenomenon. In the past, I don’t think it would be all that common for a large business to take a formal stance on political issues that didn’t relate to their business. Clearly a business would have a stance on taxes, minimum wage laws, union privileges, etc. But, on gay marriage?
Personally, aside from perceived human right’s violations I haven’t been all that concerned with the politics of corporations that I buy from. And, as readers will likely remember, I have even spoken out against Christians boycotting businesses for their stance on this issue (and again here). I’ve also spoken about the consequences of denominations taking official stands on things not related to them.
My thought is that businesses, where possible, should take the stance Elvis took when he said ”I’m just an entertainer, I don’t want to be known for my politics. I’m just gonna sing.” And, any politics that are outside of the the interests of the business function should be done as individuals, rather than giving the business an official stance.
Chick-fil-A has spoken out though, or at least that is my understanding at this point, I could be wrong. And, because of it they are facing backlash.
I’m glad to see that their stance is bible based, though I don’t think the business needs an official stance. If there was one near me, I would certainly give their food a try.
What are your thoughts on the matter? Does the official anti-gay marriage view of Chick-fil-A matter to you? Does knowing a business has an agreeable, or disagreeable, political view that isn’t related to their doing business change how you look at the business and the likelihood of you shopping there?
And, mostly importantly, is Chick-fil-A any good? And why aren’t they in my area!
UPDATE: I have since seen reports that Chick-fil-A merely answered that they support biblical marriage and their ownership is Christian, and that they didn’t seek to make a political statement. Seems the liberals were looking to make trouble for them.

@thatkyliegirlx@xanga - Cicero was one of the great men of history, probably the greatest statesman in Roman history.
He used the same intellectual tradition (natural law) as the ancient Greeks 500 years earlier. And 1200 years later Saint Thomas Aquinas took up the torch as the Catholic Church endeavored mightily to preserve civilization.
Civil rights giant Martin Luther King (1960s) wrote his famous letter from the Birmingham jail and based his reasoning on natural law. He even mentioned Saint Thomas Aquinas by name.
The United States of America, the greatest nation in the history of the world, was designed and built from scratch, using natural law. That was the 1700AD.
So I am not just making things up like you are with the absurdity of gay marriage and gay rights. Your thinking has no tradition and no precedent in human history. Therefore it is dangerously radical and irrational.
@thatkyliegirlx@xanga - I suggest you take a basic course on biology. Biology is the study of nature from a scientific point of view.
I also suggest taking some courses on ancient philosophy.My quote from the famous Roman statesman Marcus Cicero comes from the book I used to study the US Constitution given by Hillsdale College, a renown US university.
The belief in gay marriage requires the repudiation of science, philosophy and Christianity. In short, it means the repudiation of Western Civilization.
Take a look at Afghanistan. That's what the world looks like without Western Civilization.
I have said it before and stick by it i only eat there on sunday. I am bisexual, my recently passed sister in law was a lesbian, my best friend is bisexual, i personally know 4 or 5 gay men. They are all wonderful honest hard working good people. We may be different from you but it doesnt give anyone the right under their religion or not to disciminate against us or prevent us from being married and having the benifts of marriage or being happy together. It is an assault on human rights to deny anyone happieness plain and simple there are examples of homosexuality, asexuality, heterosexuality, and even changing sex completely everywhere in nature! We are animals of this earth and like other animals we have variations from the norm. I keep running into this and the more i expierence such hatred the more i have come to realize that religion is toxic. If you want to believe in a higher power thats fine, but to put your faith into a book written by man not a god is just insane to me. If your someone who thinks gays will go to hell fine whatever think what you want, but that should not allow for us to be treated differently in any way under the law!!!
@DarkMeru@xanga - Nobody at Chick-fil-a is discriminating against you. The President of the company said that be favors the traditional view of marriage.
Isn't he allowed to have his opinion without being demonized?
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - Like i said you can carry whatever opinion you or he would like but when you support anit gay organizations and political parties then yes it does affect all gays and lesbians. Just recently a yong woman was fired for no real reason, her hours were cut and was eventually let go, she was a lesbian which the company did not know until after she aquired her job. To anyone with a brain thats discrimination!
I probably wouldn't care if it was simply them taking a stance on the issue. It doesn't surprise me the CEO is against members of the same sex being able to enter into a marriage agreement. The issue is that they use their profits to advocate this stance. Which puts people, like myself, who are in the opposite side of the issue in a very bad position. How can we say we support same sex marriage, but give our money to a corporation who will ultimately use it to oppose us? It makes no sense. As a responsible and aware consumer, you have to ask yourself if the product or service is important enough to indirectly financially support a stance you oppose. And a lot of people have decided they can live without Chick-fil-a.
Chick-Fil-A routinely gives funds to anti-gay organizations "[…N]ew IRS 990 forms reveal that the company donated nearly two million dollars to anti-gay groups in 2009 alone" http://equalitymatters.org/factcheck/201111010001. ("Seems the liberals were looking to make trouble for them." Seems you wanted to generalize and point fingers.)
I'm perfectly fine with organizations holding opinions. However, when they enter the public sphere, they should not be surprised the public sphere responds (hence why I refuse to shop at Hobby Lobby).
Chick-Fil-A is restricting marriage for individuals and their ability to provide families with the same economic oportunities as heterosexual families as well as keeping them away from employment, further hurting those families (amongst other anti-gay causes).
Hence, the favor is being returned through boycott. Treat others as you wish to be treated.
@LadyGwenivere@xanga - No kidding! I say allow gay marriage, watch as America doesn't fall apart and let's take care of the real issues.
The owner of Chic-Fil-A is entitled to his opinion. I give him credit for standing true to his beliefs and not being pressured by society to lie and pretend that he supports something he doesn't. After all, people are entitled to an opinion right? Why should his company be boycotted for an opinion? I think these people lashing out at Chic-Fil-A are being hypocritical, they think his opinion is hateful, well it's also hateful to think that he should be boycotted because of his beliefs. No one is forcing anybody to eat at Chic-Fil-A. It was like people being surprised when Kirk Cameron said he didn't support gay marriage, did they really expect, a guy as strong in his Christian beliefs as him, would support it? You can be against gay marriage without being homophobic, but people assume the worst. Eat there or don't, it's that simple. But don't take it overboard just because someone doesn't agree with you.
@breakingthepath@xanga.com
Actually, God did NOT create homosexuals. (neither humans or animals) I don't think God would specify "being homosexuality is wrong" then go and create homosexuals,
If I remember correctly, the bible talks about homosexuality being a severe confusion of the mind, and life itself. Or at least, it used confusion as an example. So no, God didn't create homosexuality any more than He created murder.
I stand by Chick-fil-A. Even if I didn't agree with them supporting traditional marriage organizations, I would still stand by them because their rights of freedom of speech are being taken away. And THAT, is the real issue here.
@TiredSoVeryTired@xanga - Thanks LOL! We have gay marriage here in Canada and nothing bad has happened. Let them get married.. How many couples actual value their marriage vows these days?? Gay couples fought for those rights, maybe they can help decrease the divorce rate a bit.
Once upon a time, there was a civilization of people who all loved each other regardless of identity with sexuality, religion, or anything. They all owned kitties and puppies and said I love you.
THIS WAS ON ANOTHER PLANET BECAUSE OURS EXPLODED FROM IGNITED STUPIDITY.
The end.
@Adrenaline_Unknown@xanga - best.comment.EVER!
Why is it that when stores like Loews makes a big deal out of supporting Gays, its no problem. But when Chic- Fil A makes an equal stand in the opposite direction- its a problem? Neither of these companies sell products having anything to do with these stands.Neither of these companies "needs" to be supporting either few publicly. But if they do, they both should be granted the same privilege of expressing these views in a peaceful manor.
FYI : Chic- Fil A had its start in the "Bible Belt" and have Always had these views- its just since they have moved out of that area, that it has become an issue.
@thatkyliegirlx@xanga - Don't give them any ideas....
I whole-heartedly wish that gay marriage was universally legal in the USA. Gays and straights alike would benefit from new legislature. Gays could finally get married, and the rest of america wouldn't have to hear shit like this everyday. I really can't stand the ignorance on both sides. If you give a damn take political action. If we just gave them the same liberties the rest of us enjoy we could all just get on with our lives and be PEOPLE like all of us are.
I love how the most avid poster in this world cites rulers who live centuries ago. Men who were hypocrites and bigots. Men who were ruthless and savage. Gay people are an abomination but war and genocide is okay?
Yeah. This convinces me wholeheartedly that Christianity is a loving religion.
Those 'christians' who speak out so much against this are participating in some serious sin themselves. Pride and judgement. The fact of the matter is, gay or straight... Black or white. Sinner or faithful, the only person who is allowed to judge us is God himself.
Not Cicero, who ever, and definitely not the creators of really badly fried chicken. Hows about we focus on the transfat in the food, or the fact that Chik-Fil-A has the dryest, grossest chicken sandwich the world has spewed out. Instead of bashing the gays, maybe that guy should be asking them for help on making his crappy food taste better.
(For the record, I did indeed just JUDGE a chicken sandwich.)
Chick-fil-A Spokesman Don Perry died today after all this controversy erupted. Coincidence? Or just too much Coke and Chicken...? Lol, who gives a fuck!
@LadyGwenivere@xanga - Then why didn't you recommend it?
@LadyGwenivere@xanga - Ha you just did.
@TheThoughtsofJake@xanga - please go find someone else to bother. im not interested.
awesome post.
I personally feel like a lot of the people who are supporting Chik-Fil-A or at the very least think those of us who choose not to eat there are overreacting is because they don't understand where we are coming from. I could care less what their official position is on the subject. If the CEO doesn't agree with my life or think I should get married so be it. That is the opinion of a lot of people in this world and I'm a supporter of individual liberty as well as the right to be ignorant. HOWEVER the reason that I am not giving them my money is not because of their opinion, it is because they give their money that they are getting from consumers to organizations so they can push the anti-gay agenda. It makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE for me to want rights I believe I'm entitled to as a citizen of a free country and then turn around and give money to a company that would love for me to be stripped of those rights. That is what this is about and that's what it's always been about. Those of us who cared to know, already knew about their stance years ago when we learned where their money was going. We acted accordingly.
I also want to point out that the AFA which is a very well known anti-gay organizations and whose President has blamed several world tragedies on gays has advocated the boycott of pro-gay right organizations as well so it's not like it's just a one-sided thing. When Google came out in support of marriage equality they advocated that their followers boycott Google which....is a stretch to say the least.
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - Actually...the idea that our country won't allow two, consenting adults to get married is an assault on human rights and is utterly ridiculous. We waste our time debating things that should be basic, civil rights, instead of focusing on other problems in the world.
It doesn't effect you if a gay couple gets married. It causes you no harm, nor does it take away any value from your straight marriage.
It's love...it's just love. And anyone who wants to discriminate or criticize someone in a world that seems sometimes to be overflowing with hatred because they simply want to be married to the person they love, is sick to me. You are sick to me. The overwhelming amount of selfishness and arrogance that leads you to hate upon homosexuals is disgusting.
As a civilized human being, you should recognize the ridiculousness of opposing gay marriage. Have a heart. You must be blind if you don't see what you're taking away from people. I can't believe you'd support something that lessens someone's happiness simply because you are too closed-minded and selfish.
@JulyFire@xanga - Marriage is not a right.
Human rights are not based on sexual proclivity. They are based on our human nature and endowed to us by the Creator.
That's why the idea of gay marriage is so pernicious. It not only redefines marriage but it redefines human rights.
And in so doing it destroys them both.
