Christian Moms Boycott JCPenney
By The Closet Calvinist
JCPenney is under pressure now from “One Million Moms,” a Christian group of women, who are angry about a lesbian woman being the new spokesperson.
If we as Christians are to be about sharing the Gospel, what does this boycott do for us? Does it make sharing the Gospel with a lost and hurting world easier? Do you think Ron Johnson will suddenly want to hear the Gospel after having to deal with pressures from yet another Christian boycott? Will Ellen suddenly become straight because she knows a million mothers don’t want her to be the spokesperson for JCPenney? This episode of her show doesn’t make that seem all too promising.
By focusing on these issues we are distracting ourselves from proclaiming the Gospel, and pushing away the very people who need to hear the Gospel proclaimed. If you must boycott, at least do it for their human rights violations rather than over this.
JCP stock was down 3.96% as of close of business today (6/5/12), similar brand stocks had much smaller losses, and even one with a big gain today. The Closet Calvinist does not own any JCP stock, and does not intend to within the next 30 days.

If anything they should be boycotting A&F, I mean, do you see all the nakie pics on the walls. A&F doesn't actually take a stand for purity and so many Christian moms let their kids buy from that store. I mean if you are going to boycott one store for unrighteousness then boycott, all the other ones too.
Maybe instead of boycotting, a million mom's should get together and pray an hour or 2 everyday for the people to want to know the truth. For the veil over their eyes will be lifted, pray that God brings understanding, pray that God bring labors to the field, pray that when the time comes they will be open to accepting Jesus. Prayeris much more beneficial then a protest. God hears the continuous prayers of the righteous. Think about it a million mom, doesn't it say where '2 or 3 are gathered God is in the mist of them'. Wow a million moms, see how much good could have been accomplished if they are praying everyday together at the same time. It could have be a thing were groups of local moms all across american get together at a certain time everyday to pray and ask God's help for out nation,to ask for God's mercy. Then they could have gone in groups going to local areas, partitioning to clean up areas and help kids who are in need. Bring food to those ares, and helping young girls who don't have mom's but are pregnant not make rash decisions and have a voice of reason with them and comfort of a mom. What if the girl was thinking about getting a abortion, wouldn't it be great if someone could tell that girl their experience with abortion and how they felt after, or someone could tell her about how they were young and thinking about abortion but they decided to give the child up for adoption and now the child is doing well. Wouldn't it be better for ladies to up lift this girl and be a true mom to her. They could call themselves mom's with a mission. Hmm protesting doesn't seem so powerful anymore. This protest will eventually end, but praying for people shouldn't stop they could have came together and say we will continue to pray everyday at the same time. Going to God and asking for His help seems a lot more effective.
@ShimmerBodyCream@xanga - LOL!!! Couldn't have said it better myself
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - Gay people exist. We work hard, earn money, pay rent and taxes, and shop for clothes. Some of us are single, some are married, and some of us have kids. From an economic perspective, we represent a market. JC Penny has a gay spokesperson and an ad with gay parents and their son. It's not too hard to connect the dots here.
I also think you are confusing "normalization" with "tolerance." Suppose nobody--not even the Pope himself!--thought being gay was a sin. Would being gay be normal or typical? No. Gays would still be a minority; we would be uncommon. Being gay would be atypical, but it would still be okay. Tolerance and normalization are different, and I don't think anybody--not me, not Ellen, not JC Penny--is advocating for anything but tolerance.
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - Christians tortured and murdered for most of that time so that only THEY could have the advantage of society.
I think this is great for JCPenny to stand up for what they believe in. Someone out there will always protest something you do. I work at a Christian school and I don't agree with a lot of their beliefs what so ever but I don't stand against them.
The absence of homosexual relationships in ads hasn't stopped people from being gay. Good grief. I do wonder how many of these moms have been divorced though.
All this has done is give people who didn't much care for JCPenny reason to shop there. These things always backfire for the most part. Also there name is very misleading, it's more like 40 christian bigots. They don't deserve to be called moms.
As a proud member of the Christian Left who has been in the ministry all of his adult life let me begin by saying that not everyone who is a Christian is against gay marriage. As a New Testament Christian I'm not bound by Old Testament law and I think it says something that Jesus was never recorded saying anything directly about homosexuality (let the twisting of scripture by the trolls begin). It seems to me that if it were as important to Jesus as it is to those on the far right, Jesus would have brought it up directly. Regardless of my belief, I agree with the author that the boycott simply makes Christians appear homophobic and hate filled and that does little to win others to the gospel.
I'm not saying that Christians who believe that Homosexuality is wrong should water down their beliefs or their message to appeal to the masses. They have just as much of a right to preach what they believe as I do. It's also important to remember that not everyone who is a Christian and believes homosexuality is wrong is homophobic or filled with hate, but doing things that make you appear that way is defeating your own purpose.
We have a perfect example of this right here on Xanga/Revelife. When those of you who might not identify yourselves as Christian think of the Christian Right, who do you think of? You think of Curtis (a.k.a PrisonerxOfxLove) of course! Is there anything about how Curtis presents himself and his views here that make you think "Wow, I'd really like to be like him. Maybe I should become a Christian? I'm guessing no. Hate disguised as reason is still hate and like the JCP boycott it will never lead people to Christ.
@whyzat@xanga - The greatest mass murders in history were committed by atheists during the 20th century. They are still committing genocide in Tibet and the Middle East.
Applying your modern standards to Christians who lived centuries ago is unjust. Most ancient governments and religions were iron fisted.Christianity is responsible for our concept of human rights and the value of human life, modern science and education and the end of slavery as a legal institution.
@jim_the_american@xanga - People working hard has nothing to do with gayness.
You people wear your sexual proclivity on your shirt sleeve and simply badger everyone with it.The norm is heterosexuality. The norm is health not disease or deformity or mental or sexual disorders.
Human nature is defined by the norm. Consequently heterosexuality is integral to human nature, not homosexuality.
Bullying people into accepting obvious abnormality as normal is an assault on civility and every single human right.
A person's sexual practices are their own business, not the basis for human rights or the denial of human nature.
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - "Bullying people into accepting obvious abnormality as normal is an assault on civility and every single human right." Where have I heard that type of thinking before??? Oh yeah...Germany in the late 30's.
I just have this to say; these group of women are officially the most ignorant I've ever heard of, it's shameful to our society--which is supposed to be liberal.
This is just silly. Gays are just sinners and we all are sinners....We Christians should be focusing our energies on the real evil (non-Christ accepting products ) and boycotting and speaking out on THE REAL ills of Kosher Dill Pickles, Falafel and Chicken Tikka Masala!!!
Oh yea...and Shellfish.
Need I remind those who join these one million fools about loving the sinner, hating the sin?
It's 2012. Get over it. To each their own. No one is telling you to be gay. And so what if the spokesperson is gay! Be more accepting. Treat people how you want to be treated, that's what i was always taught.
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - True about the Communists in China, but in the Middle East, the killers have the same reverence you do for the Old Testament.
Christians who lived centuries ago used the same text to justify their deeds as the text you use today to justify refusing basic rights to certain minorities.
Christianity is not responsible for our modern concept of human right or human value. Thost things have their roots in pre Christian time when the bible was used buy a minority of troublesome people who were also genocidal.
I go along with the idea that monks saved a lot of knowledge and that was far-sighted of them. Of course, later Christianity decided that science was dangerous and persecuted those who did it.
@whyzat@xanga - Mankind didn't acquire instant knowledge of the Bible. It has literally taken 2 millenia for Christianity to really take hold in people's minds.
And just when that happens terribly destructive movements like atheism and gay rights take hold and threaten to annihilate everything civilized that was built up over that great period of time.Sorry, but we get our concept of human rights and the sanctity of life from Christianity. In all other major civilizations and cultures, human life wasn't worth more than warm spit.
Life was short and brutal even in the best of ancient civilizations.
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - I'm not following your logic. Are you putting forth an argument or just restating what I said? What did I misunderstand? Pleaase explain further what you mean.
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - I agreed with you that being straight is the norm, and made a distinction between "normalization" and "tolerance." Shouldn't we *at least* be tolerant of people's abnormalities?
You said that "working hard has nothing to do with gayness." My point was that gay people earn and spend money just like any other group of people, and so constitute a market. Businesses often tailor ads to a specific market. In this case, JC Penny is soliciting purchases from gay people. Why is this wrong?
wtf! Ruth was a lesbian! But only cause her momma told her to be.
Naomi was a lesbian! Two women who didn't want to get raped by men. No matter how much society told them it was normal and acceptable *AHE-TO-THE-MUFUKN-M*
If they're mad at Penny's, just wait til they get a hold of Target. >.<
Ugh. One more boycott that I will gladly ignore. I didn't do the Starbucks one either.
@tendollar4ways@xanga -You should get an award for this comment
I like JCP a great deal. I didn't care where I shopped before, but the ad made me go looking for a JCP to shop there. Ellen DeGeneres is a wonderfully charismatic person, and being a lesbian doesn't change that. The ad pictured a happy family with happy children and two happy mothers who loved their children. Their loving family deserves the same rights and support as any other loving family.
By the way One Million Moms only has 40000 members.
