  • Creative Confidence: a TED Talk by David Kelley

One problem I take on in Creative Theology is the misconception that there are creative people, and non-creative people. If you read Genesis 1 with an ounce of attention, you’ll see how this isn’t possible.

We perpetuate the problem by labeling some as creative, and talking about “the creatives” as if they are an elite group separated by some innate quality that most don’t have. Craziness.

In this TED talk by David Kelley, he takes on the creative vs non-creative myth and provides an interesting perspective. I’ll note that I disagree with his statement that we think of “creatives” having some God-given gift. I, of course, would counter that we all have the God-given gift of creativity. But we are both trying to get to the same end. That is, breaking the distinction between creatives and non-creatives.

    Enjoy.

I really liked this, thanks!  This artistically "creative" person would also like to see people look at things differently... we are not either creative or non-creative. We are ALL creative because we are made in our Creators creative image.  It shouldn't be boxed into the artistic verses the non-artistic.  Any time we create something new... an idea for a meal, a computer program, a solution to a problem, art, teaching, music... it is all creative.  The only thing I differ with David Kelly is his statement that creativity shouldn't be looked at "like it is some God-given thing".  It very much is a God-given thing.  We just need to discover the confidence that we all have that "thing", develop it and use it.

Well, I think his point isn't that being creative is a God-given gift...but that that is the general perception of most people....which is true. But, I would say, not only is that what most people think....but it's actually true. The fact is, people are not identical in their creativity. The point of the talk was simply, "you are probably more creative than you think....so don't be afraid to explore your own creativity".
