Jesus never said anything about homosexuality, but about divorce he was very clear in Matthew 5:
31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
Why oh why do the conservative pundits love to attack gay people (which, as most of them admit [including Exodus International, famed "pray the gay away" group], is not a quality they choose), but never wage a war against divorce? Hell, Newt Gingrich, who up until two months ago was a legitimate contender for the White House, is on his third marriage. Even worse, he divorced one woman while she was in a hospital bed for cancer treatments, and divorced another after having liaisons with his current wife well before the divorce -- and he was getting the Evangelical vote!
Why is it that, in politics, the "Christian" thing to do is to ignore the actual teachings of Jesus and focus on the parts of the Bible that make your pet issues convenient? If you truly want to worry about the war on marriage, start with divorce. Start with Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Kardashian and whoever the hell she married.
They are more of the front line in the "war on marriage" than loving gay relationships will ever be.
So here's a novel concept: you really want to be a "Christian legislator"? Stop your war on homosexuals, and start your war on divorce. Sure, it might not be the kind of easily pandering to the evangelical base that anti-gay legislation may be, but it's
true to Jesus' teachings. And remember, it's not like Jesus was the most popular guy at the time of his proclamations, so why should you not follow in his footsteps and preach the true teachings of the Gospel rather than worry about reelection? Unless, of course, your Christian image is nothing more than a persona you use to get elected, you hypocritical, money-grubbing Judases.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that Christian legislators are missing the mark by fighting against homosexuality but not against divorce?

Completely agree
In your quote, please notice that Jesus used the world "wife" and the word "his". That means Jesus took for granted that marriage was the union between man and woman.
The next tidbit of brazen falsehood is that Christians are at war with gays, therefore there should be a war on divorce.
Any person interested in reason can figure out in about a second that there is no connection between a non-existent war on gays and Jesus' teachings on divorce.
Here is yet another false statement:
Why is it that, in politics, the "Christian" thing to do is to ignore the actual teachings of Jesus and focus on the parts of the Bible that make your pet issues convenient? In politics Christians have the same interest as everyone else, among them:
1. Honesty in our representatives
2. Fiscal prudence
3. Just laws
4. Proper use of our military
5. Effective economic policy
Christians share those values with their gay brethren. So the above statement is just a rather tawdry attempt at demonizing Christians, not trying to find a bridge across any disagreements.
Why should Christians abandon their culture to people who lie about them, demonize them and use the words of their Lord for cheap theater?
Anti-Christian posts like this one are truly counter productive.
Divorce basically met the same fate as inter-racial marriage as one of those things that would destroy families and society once upon a time, but today's Christian doesn't seem to mind it anymore just like one day they wont mind gay marriage. The fact is, it just wont hurt anyone but it's change and change is not good because Christian believe that God doesn't change. This shows how little they know of history.
@brown_buffalo@xanga - The Catholic Church which was established by Jesus, continues to follow his teachings faithfully.
Divorce is not permitted in the Catholic Church. For Catholics, "Til death do you part," means exactly that.
Putting clauses on the reason for divorce is a bit much. Yes, I do believe marriage should be for life. But, what.. are we going to figure out the reason why every couple that is divorcing is wanting one? That would mean pulling up evidence, getting people to testify, etc. that cheating did happen (on the basis that couples are only allowed to divorce due to cheating)
We absolutely SHOULD stand for marriage. However, God gave ALL PEOPLE free will. (and do not misinterpret that to say that divorce is 'right').
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - Yet the Catholic Church seems to pick and choose their moral issues. It's okay to uphold birth control by misrepresenting condom use as license for promiscuity while millions get infected with AIDS in Africa, then on the other hand cover up pedo-priest. But that's another subject.
I think that in America the Catholic Church has very little true followers, it's more a following out of obligation on Sunday rather than a committed stance on pro-Catholic issues. This may show the duality of Catholicism between the church bylaws and it's people, much the same way the Baptist think once saved, always saved. It amounts to fire insurance. The message comes across as 'you can sin all you want as long as you pretend to follow us.@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - Soo... if someone marries you we can kill you? I like the sound of this. I'm sure I can find someone to take one for the team for this end result.
@RazielV@xanga - Let's not stoop down to LoBorn's level and make death threats.
@brown_buffalo@xanga - You'll have to adjust your own Xanga settings to turn off the pop-up:
settings --> subscriptions --> "subscription suggestion: --> "disable"
@Celestial_Teapot@xanga - Thank you.
@brown_buffalo@xanga - People change the subject when they have no argument. But because you are slandering the Catholic Church I will address your issues.
Catholic doctrine on birth control is what it is. AIDS in Africa has nothing do with the Catholic Church or its doctrine so blaming the Church for AIDS in Africa is a nothing but a craven, hateful smear. All the condoms in the world won't solve the problem of AIDS in Africa.
Pope Benedict merely pointed out that the problem with AIDS in Africa is a moral problem not a condom problem. And he is absolutely right.
The problem of pedophile priests is one of homosexual men praying on boys. Bringing that up in a post about gay marriage damages the case for gay marriage being something natural and healthy.
As a lay Catholic I am ecstatic that many deviant sexual predators masquerading as priests were finally caught and turned over to civil justice and that their clerical enablers were exposed and disgraced. Such developments were a long time coming.
I am a devout Catholic who goes to Mass during the week and on Sunday, who goes to Confession and takes Communion regularly, who prays the Divine Office regularly and who prays the Rosary regularly.
It is better to have a few strong believers in a faith then a lot of luke warm flakes who don't really know what they are doing.
Nevertheless there are about a billion Catholics world wide.
why has revelife taken to regularly posting submissions from a self proclaimed troll?
@GodlessLiberal@xanga - Not a threat. More of an imply-ment :3
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - So, Curtis, you fooled me. I guess I will ignore you now.
@Lynn Males@facebook - Great points. I often wonder why people are so against what doesn't concern them. If they don't like abortion, don't abort, don't like gay marriage, marry the opposite sex or not. To stand in the way of other people's happiness when it has absolutely no effect on you is anti-American, not to mention just plain rude.@iones_island@xanga - I've never proclaimed to be a troll. Just an atheist. Unless to you these two things are one and the same?
@Lynn Males@facebook - The Catholic Church is not up in arms over homosexuals. The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuals must be treated with dignity as is true for all men.
However, the 40 or so Catholic organizations are up in arms along with the American bishops because of the Obama administration's attack on the 1st Amendment.@iones_island@xanga - I see nothing trollish about this post.
@brown_buffalo@xanga - You act in your own best interest by ignoring me. By taking such an action you relieve yourself of the responsibility of explaining your position.
You can't explain your position so best name call, abuse and demonize in order to change the subject.
Such actions only prove your cause unworthy.
@RazielV@xanga - @GodlessLiberal@xanga - Why should Christians give in to people who at heart are rude, condescending, and abusive?
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - [Why should Christians give in to people who at heart are rude, condescending, and abusive?]
I don't believe anybody should give in to you.
@Lynn Males@facebook - What two (or more, polyamory should be legal too as far as I'm concerned) consenting adults do is NONE OF YOUR GOD-FUCKING-DAMNED BUSINESS.
That is true. That's why Christians don't want gay marriage legalized. Because once gay marriage is legalized homosexuality becomes a government sanctioned sexual preference. That makes it everyone's business.
@GodlessLiberal@xanga - not only have i seen your comments and posts rolling around which are completely trollish and hateful you opened up one of your recent posts stating that your motivation is to attack religion. "If I was on the fence about why there was a reason to come back and start blogging my usual tirades against religion," so don't go trying to play the victim "oooh whaaa im being oppressed look im being judged and oppressed for being an atheist sad sad me" card. it's dishonest and stupid. and flame on all you want; beyond this explanation i won't be wasting further time on you.
@brown_buffalo@xanga - wouldn't know, the author's reputation is such that I have no ears for whatever he has to say. you'll note the question wasn't "why are you posting trollish posts?" but rather "why are you posting submissions from a troll".
@GodlessLiberal@xanga - I'm not asking anyone to give into me. Judeo-Christianity is 3500 years old. We have a right to protect our culture and values from those who wish to destroy them.
And your body of work here on Xanga demonstrates your intense hatred of Christianity and America and your wish to destroy them.
Battling atheist hatred is the American Way.
@PrisonerxOfxLove@xanga - Unfortunately, the institutional church tends to pick and choose which of Jesus' teachings it promotes. If the church was truly following Jesus' teachings it would encourage upholding the concept of loving one's neighbors and enemies. Instead, and sadly, the church has been divisive and created more hate than the love and community that Jesus talked about.
I totally agree that some professing Christians have the wrong attitude and are so adamant about some things but completely seem to ignore others. It's easy to be loud about things you don't struggle with, but we all get quiet when an issue that we deal with is in the spotlight.
Also though you gotta be careful, because Jesus didn't say much on child prostitution, slavery, or rape, so silence doesn't always mean agreement.
@stunning_dor2@xanga - Excuse me but Christianity does teach us to love our neighbor. For that very reason Jesus established his Church.
I belong to the biggest established Christian church in the world and it teaches "love they neighbor" everyday of the year.
So what you are saying is not true at all.
And just look at all the abuse I am receiving from all the atheists and gay rights advocates who are commenting here.
These people are out to destroy not only Christianity but the Christian people themselves. Girl, you need to wake up and smell the coffee.
They'll be coming after you next if you dare to speak up.
