Because God Told Me: Using Faith as Justification
My secretary tapped on my office door inside the First Baptist Church of small town Oklahoma, peeked inside, and said “Mrs. Jones is here to see you.” Then, making sure only I could see her, she rolled her eyes and backed out of the doorway, leaving room for my visitor to slip past her. I invited Mrs. Jones to come into my study and set down while I tried unsuccessfully to suppress a guilty grin. “God has been speaking to me” she began in an incredibly condescending tone, “and he wants me to tell you that he disapproves of the post-prom party you are planning for the youth group.”
“Really? and exactly what is it he disapproves of?” “Well” she replied, “by having the party start after the prom rather than having it during the prom you are implying that the church feels it is acceptable for young christian men and women to dance together in a lascivious manner.” I attempted to counter by saying that, at least in my own personal experience, it was what happened after the prom that usually got kids in trouble and that to the best of my knowledge no one had ever actually gotten pregnant while on the dance floor.
“I don’t appreciate your cavalier attitude young man. I intend to bring this up to the church board, have the party cancelled, and see that you are disciplined.” “In the future” she continued, “perhaps you should spend more time in prayer and personal Bible study so that you can more accurately discern the will of God.”
“Thank you for your concern, and for sharing your opinion, Mrs. Jones. However, if God wants to tell me something I imagine he would speak directly to me.”
I know this sounds like a scene from the movie “Footloose” but it’s actually a scene out of my life in the ministry, circa 1987.
The scene above has repeated itself in many, many different transmutations over the course of the 36 years I’ve been a minister. Which is why, even today, if I hear someone start a sentence by saying “God told me” I make sure I’m squarely facing that person because I figure I’m about to get stabbed in the back.
“Bitter much?” I hear you say. No, not so much bitter as I am incredibly world weary of the ways that people use their faith as an excuse to justify and promote their personal agendas.
I certainly feel that God has impressed many things on me over the years but never once have I felt he was telling me to go correct the behavior of another believer. I’ve had all I can handle dealing with my own shortcomings to feel the need to point them out in others.
I believe that God has “told” me to simply try and lead our little church to do the things I think the church is supposed to be doing. We try and feed a lot of people. We try and provide clothes to a lot of people. And we could care less what color you are, what language you speak, what your political affiliation is, or who you sleep with. We don’t proselytize, and we don’t point fingers. Most of all, we have lots of fun. The best part may be that my fellow staff members are my best friends and my best drinking buddies. As far as I’m concerned it doesn’t get any better than that.
That doesn’t make my church any better than anyone else's, but I can say that I never start a sentence with “God told me.”
I might start a sentence with “My bartender told me” but it won’t mean I’m about to stab you in the back.
(What can I say, Mrs. Jones could never get me to change my cavalier attitude.)
In what ways have you seen people use their faith or "the God card" to justify personal agendas? Have you ever been guilty of this? Do you think it's appropriate in some situations -- can the reasoning really be that God said so -- or does there always have to be a logical reason attached?

I'm not sure about this post. Maybe after 36 years you've seen it all, but after the 36 lines or so of this post it seems to me like you could have handled the woman a little more compaassionately. I'm guessing she's very traditional and anything beyond square dancing is forbidden to her. I mean to be honest, she could easily be my grandmother(lova ya Grandma!). Even if she isn't in her 80's and is in her 30's then, as a man of God, it is your job to try and discern where she is coming from and understand her needs and wants. There is a big difference. Does she use her faith to get what she wants? Or does she use her faith to get what she needs.
In this instance one of her core needs that may have been ingrained during her childhood(no dancing) may have been violated by the modern ways of your church. Just talking it out with her and recognizing her point of view and then declaring how your point of view may not line up, but is still okay, would have been best.
Yet another reason to become Catholic. God only talks to the priest.
I agree that usually, if God wants us to know something, he tells us himself. And why is it that most of the time, God only tells things to people who are already crazy? And also, my absolute favorite is when people say God told them something when he says the exact opposite in scripture. Oh really? God told you to leave your wife for another woman? Nah, not so much.
I think sometimes people feel strongly convicted about something but they want to feel more justified than just saying it's their opinion, so they say God's "been dealing with" them. lol.
I tend to get into a lot of debates with people. Not because I think my way is the only way. But because that is how I learn. I like to go up against people and share my views, and answer their responses, to see if I have a well reasoned enough argument.
Yes, I believe that my beliefs are correct. If I did not think it was correct, why would I believe it? I have yet to meet someone who said "I know this is not true, but I am going to believe it anyway."
So, I have been accused of being very narrow minded. But my mind is often very large and open. Just because I believe what I believe, does not mean that I do not understand or respect your opinion. I just don't agree with it.
Having said that. Do I believe that God spoke to me and said this, or spoke to me and said that? no, but I believe He speaks to all of us through His scripture. If the Bible wanted to forbid dancing, I am sure God would have put it in. Let's make stands for what the Bible is against, and warn people of the judgment coming if they do not know Christ and His sacrifice. everything else is second.
I have never thought about it, I mean some people do use God's name as a way of getting their own way (or trying to).
Whilst I had some run in's at my old church (mostly because of my tattoos and piercings from before I was saved?!) nobody said "God told me that you..." except for in a compassionate way for prayer or something nice.
More food for thought
@kosmikawaii@xanga - That's true for me. I have felt God telling me to give someone money or to help someone, but never to put them down or judge them, especially for something that is not spelled out in scripture.
Sounds like one of the typical idiots that think the Holy Spirit tells them what socks to put on in the morning.
You woudn't believe what all kinda stuff God tells me, she's witty and hilarious!
@Smokin_SultrySally@xanga - <3
I love hearing a sane Christian voice on this blog. With all the fire and blood and hypocrisy being preached during this year by people using Christianity to promote a very un-Christian agenda I am so, so, so, so, so glad to hear people like this man make a quiet, real comment on the state of religion in this country.
Thanks so much for this blog entry.
@Smokin_SultrySally@xanga - LOL! And, um, interesting profile pic.
@phoebester@xanga - Thank you! That was very sweet. I appreciate it.
