  • The Rebecca Black of Christian Music

There is some really good Christian rap, and there is some really horrific Christian rap.

The other night, Dan and I were having a laugh about this video in particular:

The use of autotune is horrific -- well, the whole song is pretty resoundingly amateur including the cinematography.

It honestly sounds like Rebecca Black. Or maybe, more like a grown man trying to sound like a Justin Beiber. I don't know what the hoot is about with autotune, people should be banned from using it unless they are Kanye West or Sufjan Stevens

And then there was another video by the same guy with some even worse lyrics:

"We coming up like a helicopter, we dropping on the Devil. GOTCHA."

I don't know how anyone could take it seriously. He sounds like some country hick who hasn't realised World War 2 is over, and still loves dropping bombs on the Nazis or something. The obsession with the war motif is rather scary.

I should probably put a disclaimer: no offense (whatever that means).

What do you think about these songs and videos?  Is there something to be said for good intentions, or are these just really good examples of how not to make Christian music?  What are some examples of good Christian music that is out right now?

This is pretty bad rap. But Rebecca is still far worse, IMO.

But here's a question for you:  what's going on for you that you took the time to write a negative review of this work?  And I don't mean you shouldn't have, but I wonder if you've explored your own motivations for doing so yet?
It seems to me the best invitation to each of us in this life is to explore our own passion and gifting in relationship with others.  The challenge it seems is to continue doing so (while getting to know ourselves more intimately...aka holiness) as we consider how outsiders respond.  Its safer to go to college, get a piece of paper that says I passed the test, get a job and do what someone else tells me to do, than to seek my uncategorized passion, present my fully inspired work for critique, and keep doing that over and over as I discover myself more fully.
I wonder if there's a passion you've not explored that is knocking at the door of your soul waiting to be seen and honored.

I'm not Christian, but I personally like Flyleaf. This dude's second song sounds like the Halloween theme song.
