And a voice from heaven said “This is my Son, whom I Love; with him I am well Pleased”
With these words, God the Father proclaimed His love for the Son Jesus Christ. He also announced that with this one -- with this child -- He was well pleased. Of all the generations before; whether Abraham, Moses, Joshua, King David or Josiah only one would bear the honour of God announcing to the world; with him, I am well pleased.
The Christ exonerates and glorifies the Father in all that He does. He is only concerned with the Father’s will and follows it obediently, even unto death. There is reason God is well pleased with the Son. It is not only that Christ is the son; it also rests on the eternal bond of trust and self sacrificial obedience that exists between them.
When Christ asks us to follow He tells us to seek what pleases Him. Col 1:10 - ‘And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God’.
As Christ pleased His father, so to Christ’s followers are called to learn what pleases the Lord and live accordingly. Thus growing in the knowledge of God. Doing good for others (In Christ’s name not our own – Eph 2:8-10) and unselfishly serving in love. When we love someone we want to please them. Such commitment is not born of necessity or out of a fear of punishment. Rather, we want to please people we love because we love them – it is that simple. Nurturing a love for God goes hand in hand with learning and seeking what pleases Him.
How wonderful to live a life that is truly worthy of God’s calling, that your heart may hear God say of you: You are one of mine and with you I Am well pleased.
When have you felt like God was pleased with you? Have you ever felt this way? What can you do today to live a life more pleasing to your Father?
