  • The YMCA Drops the Christian from the Name

[This is reposted as part of our Best-Of Revelife Week. It was originally posted on July 14, 2010.]

Other than a popular disco dance tune, do you honestly know what YMCA stands for?

It means Young Men's Christian Association, and today the organization revealed a brand change – and a name change. Embracing what has already become popular vernacular, the YMCA announced it will drop the extra letters and be called simply “The Y.”

The change has drawn mixed reactions. On one hand, the name is dated; the YMCA is open to far more people today than just young men, the demographic for which it was originally intended. On the other hand, though, the shortened name could be seen as a downplaying or a departure from the organization's Christian roots, having started as a Bible study in the 1800's.

said Molly Clark, a five-year member of the YMCA in Tennessee. “Because this organization was founded on Christianity. Its goal is to minister. It is a ministry."

“By removing Christ or Christianity from their title, they're just taking another step away from their original mission,” said Bryan Fischer, director of issue analysis for government and public policy at the American Family Association.

Jim Dickson, President and CEO of the East Tennessee YMCA, assured members that they need not worry: “We're going to change our logo and change the way we talk about what we do, but the core of what we do will never change.”

Though The Y has dropped the Christian – and the men – from its name, the organization will still be legally called the YMCA.

Do you think the YMCA's rebranding is an attempt to be politically correct and distance itself from its Christian roots? Or do you think the name is really less important than the integrity of the ministry?

It's been The Y for a while now. I think I'd know because I haven't been there for a couple years, lol. I need to go back! By the way they're trying to take God out of everything now a days and it's getting to be really pathetic!

Nah I think they're just trying to get the "men" out of the name.

Yes it is and they should be ashamed of themselves, being embarrassed to be linked with Christianity. I think the founders are rolling in their graves. Another example of materialism's changing Christians and Christian organizations.

I agree totally!   It is a shame they are moving away from where they began!  Of course, the "Y" no longer applies either since it's not just "young" folks going...and well...I guess the "M" isn't reality anymore either since it's not just "men" who go.....hmmm.....

Anyone a member of the Christ Church of England?  No?  Well, the you would not be eligible to join the YMCA in London in the beginning during the Industrial Revolution (circa 1844).  The strategy has changed for the Y, but not its core values.  I have been a member for 64 years and witnessed evolution of change....all for the better.  It is more in the eye of the beholder and what you are willing to see as witness to your own faith journey and sharing with others regardless of the faith of others.

GOOD! YMCA receives a lot of public funding so they need to be separated from religion. First amendment. If they want to be Christian then they can go private or register as a church organization - neither options really suit their mission well, though. And I'm glad they can be more inclusive to non-christians this way.

If you want to fill the world with your Christ love than do it with the love itself rather than brandishing Christ's name in vain.
