  • What's So Good About Friday?

Along the way they came on a man from Cyrene named Simon and made him carry Jesus' cross. Arriving at Golgotha, the place they call "Skull Hill," they offered him a mild painkiller (a mixture of wine and myrrh), but when he tasted it he wouldn't drink it.

After they had finished nailing him to the cross and were waiting for him to die, they whiled away the time by throwing dice for his clothes. Above his head they had posted the criminal charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews. Along with him, they also crucified two criminals, one to his right, the other to his left. People passing along the road jeered, shaking their heads in mock lament: "You bragged that you could tear down the Temple and then rebuild it in three days—so show us your stuff! Save yourself! If you're really God's Son, come down from that cross!"

The high priests, along with the religion scholars and leaders, were right there mixing it up with the rest of them, having a great time poking fun at him: "He saved others—he can't save himself! King of Israel, is he? Then let him get down from that cross. We'll all become believers then! He was so sure of God—well, let him rescue his 'Son' now—if he wants him! He did claim to be God's Son, didn't he?" Even the two criminals crucified next to him joined in the mockery.

From noon to three, the whole earth was dark. Around mid-afternoon Jesus groaned out of the depths, crying loudly, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"

Some bystanders who heard him said, "He's calling for Elijah." One of them ran and got a sponge soaked in sour wine and lifted it on a stick so he could drink. The others joked, "Don't be in such a hurry. Let's see if Elijah comes and saves him."

But Jesus, again crying out loudly, breathed his last.

At that moment, the Temple curtain was ripped in two, top to bottom. There was an earthquake, and rocks were split in pieces. What's more, tombs were opened up, and many bodies of believers asleep in their graves were raised. (After Jesus' resurrection, they left the tombs, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.)

The captain of the guard and those with him, when they saw the earthquake and everything else that was happening, were scared to death. They said, "This has to be the Son of God!"
    - Matthew 27:32-54 (Message)

It seems kind of strange that we would call the day some holy guy was murdered as a "good" day.  If you think of the days when other influential religious figures were assassinated, you'd be hard pressed to find any of those days called "good."  So, what exactly is so "good" about Friday?

Unlike other religious figures who have been killed for their beliefs, all of Christianity believes that Jesus died for a distinct purpose: to pave a way for us to go home.  In order to live fully and have eternal life, the Son of God had to die.  It is because of this sacrifice that Christians receive salvation.

So while no death is really great or celebratory, in the most humble and selfless way possible, the death of Jesus is good, because without it we would not be able to have the relationship with God we enjoy today.

What do you find good in Good Friday?  How has Jesus' sacrifice changed your life?

Not quite right (at least the way this post sounds to me) ------ Jesus lived a sinless life and died to pay for, atone for, our sins.  He's not a mere example.  He paid the penalty we deserve.  For us.  That is what is "good" about ' Good Friday.'  He died.  Willingly. So that we might be able to live eternally with God in heaven.

It was never originally "Good Friday". It's a transliteration of "God's Friday", which was a day of mourning and reflecting on the paint and anguish, the horror of that event. It was to be a memorial to the darkest day ever recorded in the world. The only thing that allows us to get through this day is the hope and faith that three days later, He arose and conquered death, thereby lighting the path for us to also conquer death. This day is the extreme in darkness and hopelessness, pain and anguish, and Easter is the ultimate in celebration of new life, life over death, the ultimate conquest of sin and pain and evil, and all things bad.

The day the living God touched Death was a good day for mankind.

Let's say you find out that you are pregnant. From the day you find out, that you have that life in you growing, you start making plans. you start buying or reading books of baby names, you paint a nursery, you buy a crib, you buy diapers, you do all this work, for the day of joy you know that is coming.

Every left jab to the kidney, does not dissuade you from your task of making things ready for the day your son or your daughter is born. You are determined to take care of that baby from day one.

The day finally comes, the doctor tells you to push and Ananda* is born into the world. You look down at the face and you know all the pain, and work, and toil was worth it.

What is so good about Good Friday? Christ, according to the Bible, was slain from the foundation of the world. From the get go so to speak, God had a plan of what was going to happen for all these humans that were coming. and like the mother in the above story, He puts His plan into action. He teaches, He preaches, He sends prophets out to get people ready. Every sin that happens does not dissuade Him for what He knows has to be done. Then the day comes and God the Son steps down into the world. He spends a lifetime telling people what has to be done. He spends a lifetime helping and teaching and getting everything just right. Then He gets up on a cross and dies. So that we can live. There is nothing bad about Good Friday. It is God, showing us that He loves us so much, that a plan spanning thousands of years, has finally come to the exact same conclusion that was planned out from the start. the death, burial, and resurrection of the founder of the plan and the world.

Good Friday was not just a good day for mankind, it was a good day for God too. It was the day where everything came together just as was planned, and He wrote us a love letter, stained and sealed with His sacrifice.  All we have to do is open it and accept it.

*Ananda  is Sanskrit and means either Joy from Heaven, or depending on your translation "the joy without which the universe would cease to exist. either way I figured the name was perfect for my needs
