  • Why Is It So Hard to Not Sin?

Everyone on this earth sins their heads off at one point or another in their life. I remember that my hardest years were in middle school before I met Jesus.

But I still sin, and for some stupid reason, even though I know sinning is wrong, I still do it. I still lie. I still seek out sexual pleasure. I still hurt people. I still look away from God. And I still idolize things I should have very little to do with.

Every day I sin. Not always on purpose. But it’s not like I stop myself. I am a sinner. I absolutely despise myself for it. But I do it anyways. Sin has integrated itself in me and my friends. I still try to follow Jesus, as I will always do. But I continuously look of my path to something else that is not good for me.

We all sin. And we will all be judged for our sins. So why do we do them? Why do we enjoy hurting people, and disobeying god? What happened to us? And why is it so hard for anyone to stop sinning? Why is it that we do these horrible nasty things all the time when we know that the consequence for it is not entering Heaven?

Do you have an answer to these questions?  How can we encourage those who are weighed down by the sin in their lives?

i think people mess up because they have their morals forced upon them, rather than choosing for themselves what is genuinely right and wrong.  since i'm an existentialist and believe in moral relativity, it's pretty easy to not "sin" (to use the Christian language).

as apathetic as it sounds, i really don't see why it's hard for some people to follow their moral code.  if you REALLY believe that something is wrong, why would you do it?  either you're weaker than i am, or you must not really believe that what you did was wrong.

Just keep repenting never giving up and getting back, getting back in the race.

Increasing your prayer time with God will truly help.

Your not redeemed yet. many preach your redeemed when saved but that is inaccurate scripturally. You become redeemed mostly at the second coming and finally after the Great White throne Judgment. But scripturally here is your support:

"Because yours and my Savior Jesus spoke through the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans that,"

verse 9 " 'If you confess with your mouth "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 for it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and you are saved. 11 As the scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame. Romans 10:9-11.

Romans 10:13 For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Here below, even Paul says he and all Christians struggle with sin.

Romans 10:14-15. 14 How then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one in whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" .

    Romans 7:24

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God----through Jesus christ our Lord!

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

This law of sin Paul describes clearly in Romans 7:14-23

Is interpreted as a life long struggle with the justification and overcoming the flesh, sinning, repenting sinning repenting gradually sinning less and less and less. It is a lifetime of learning, not a one time shot when saved.

I'm an atheist and I don't really sin. In fact I find it hard to because sinning (by any defensible definition) kind of ends up screwing someone else over. So I don't lie, steal, cheat, or invade or hurt people in any way.

If you're religious and you have trouble sinning I would try taking a look at the forbidden temptation themes found in religious doctrine and see if they are making it harder for you.

We all sin??? not me! lol, just kidding. Read Romans 6 & 7, and remember we will never be perfect but we seek to be better, to grow, and to get closer to God and be a better witness in word and in deed. if you are growing, then do not be too hard on yourself. my suggestion would be to write in a spiritual journal. I write in mine when I have quiet times in which I read scripture and pray. I just pick up some old journals and read sometimes and am amazed to see my journey written in ink, pages and pages. It reminds me I am on a journey and I need to follow my convictions but if I am too hard on myself, it will only lead to depression, and really Christ has freed us from all that bondage, so when we mess up, we can know, like Paul says in Romans 7, that it is the flesh in us and not our spirit; it is the old nature but we have a new nature as well.

We sin because we are born sinners, born hating God, born headed for hell.  It's who we are, and we still do it.  Only when we are regenerated by belief in Jesus Christ as the son of God who died for our sins and won us Heaven can we be free from the consequence of sin...and yet we still fight it till the day we die.

Keep close to the cross and fall in love with God everyday. The more you love God and His ways, the harder it is for you to go your own way and "sin your head off" (lol)

That tendency we have for sin is the result of our fallen nature or, what has been traditionally referred to as "original sin." This isn't that God holds a grudge against us for what Adam and Eve did but rather we are suffering the natural result of their choice to sin.

Imagine if Eden, instead of a valley, was an island where God dwelt. Adam and Eve had the choice of remaining there with God or going their own way and going to live on a different island; they chose the latter. Thus, because of their choice, all of their subsequent offspring would be born not where God is, but apart from God.
You can also look at it in a "genetic" way; imagine that sin is like a hereditary illness of the soul. Adam and Eve in the beginning were perfect, but their choice to sin altered their very human nature: what originally was meant to be in perfect union with God was injured mortally. This condition, this sinfulness, is passed on to all of us through them.
Our life in Christ, initiated in Baptism, slowly restores us and builds us up not merely to where we should be but to where God desires us to be: His children.
This life-long struggle is part of Christian life, my friend. The most important thing to remember is that God is your Father who loves you, and just as any truly loving father He desires more your earnest, sincere effort to love Him and to be faithful above anything else. Our failures are not impossible for Him to overcome or work with, and our successes are not of our own doing but are His gifts to us anyways. Strive to love Him, to be faithful to Him in all that you do and trust in His mercy and love for you.

When we are weak, we can ponder on how God is strong -- God is our strength.

This sounds like the confession of a male who got hooked on porn and masturbation in middle school and is frustrated that he can't shake the habit. I highly doubt that he sins every day by lying every day, hurting people every day (if at all!) or idolizing worldly things every day. Those topics are just a cover for his real concern, how to overcome masturbation and porn addiction. In his world, apparently, that is known as "seeking out sexual pleasure" and he calls this "sin". That's the problem. He has a false definition of sin, first of all. Second, his parents haven't sufficiently protected him from porn. Sadly, this is very commonplace today, but I won't get on my soapbox on that right now.

It's called human nature.  Simply believing in God doesn't change that.  Becoming perfect in this life isn't a given.  It's good to try to do better, to try to love those who are unlovable, and to give to those in need.  These things make us better people, but perfect, aw no.

I just want to say I really appreciate your insites. I can see that God has blessed you with great empowerment and spiritual wisdom that can only come from your excessive study of the scriptures. When ever you participate the community thrives and is blessed from your comments and wisdom.

Everyone sins because religions defined sinning broadly enough to make sure that everyone does it. that way they have an easy way to talk people into coming to God - "you have to come to our God, because according to our definition of sinning, you're already a sinner, and you're going to hell if you don't admit it."

That message doesn't work so well if you limit sinning to things that most people don't actually do, and then you get no followers. That's why a whole slew of totally necessary and healthy human experiences (like lust, to take an easy example) are categorized as sins.

@NightCometh@xanga - I was not born hating God. I do not think I even knew what hate was back then, not to mention I do not hate any one to this day.

@RobertLeeRE@xanga - Dear brother, thank you for your compliment! I have been blessed, and I want to share all that I've received with others, too. More often than not I just try to share what my Catholic faith teaches--such as here on the topic of Original Sin--but in words and ways I hope people will find helpful and even practical. But most importantly, whatever it is I am saying and wherever it is coming from, I try to say it with as much love as possible. God bless you!
