  • A Piece of my Heart Just Went to Guatemala

By Amy at Make Me a Mary

All I wanted to do was switch out my ads in the sidebar, so I thought I’d just click over  for a sec and look at Compassion’s banners and maybe change things up a little.

Well, they have this widget where you can enter your birthday and see if there is an impoverished child who shares the same birthday as you.

    I tried it out.

And guess what? I’m sponsoring another new child. Her name is Magdalena, and she’s from Guatemala. She’s twelve—the same age as the twins—and she was born on October 22, the same day as me.

I think about my friend Sarah, who sponsors three Compassion kids, too. She says she can’t afford anymore so she tries her best to make others do it. I kind of get that. (Sarah does a beautiful job of advocating, by the way—you should totally check out her blog.)

But back to Magdalena. I can’t explain it. I just know I looked at her face and the tears came and so did the chills and I said “Do I do this, Lord?” and He said “Of course.”

I’ve already written to Magdalena in Guatemala. I sent her a family picture and also a cute picture of just the twins, since they’re the same age and all.

While I was at it, I wrote to Solomon in Uganda and Rosemary in Ghana. I cried through all three of those letters. How do you not cry when you’re attempting to let a precious child clear across the world know how much Jesus loves them and how much you’d love to hug them and how you long to do more because their life is so much harder than yours?

I’ll keep you posted on Magdalena, but you should try out the little birthday widget. (iPads and iPhones can’t handle Flash so you might have to get on a computer to see it, and if you’re in email or a reader, just click on over.)

If you do, be careful. You just might fall in love.

Do you sponsor a child? I’d love to hear about him/her in the comments

    • About Me: The title of this website was born out of a prayer I began to pray when I became widowed: "Lord, please help me love you more". Over time, I grew to deeply admire Mary Magdalene for the way she loved her Saviour and was completely sold out to Him, and my original prayer evolved into "Lord, make me a Mary." I long to be at the feet of Jesus, too, learning from Him and taking Him in. I also aspire to be like Mary the mother of Jesus, because she exemplifies a total trust in God and in His sovereign plan, even in the midst of frightening circumstances.
