Herman Cain: God Told Me to Run
By The Closet Calvinist
That’s when I prayed and prayed and prayed. I’m a man of faith — I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I’ve ever done before in my life. And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses. ‘You’ve got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?’These are the words of former presidential candidate Herman Cain. Cain stated, and assuming he is honest, believed that God told him to run for president.
To me that presents a problem. While I won’t go so far as to say that God does not speak to people today, though I do think there is evidence to support that. But, I will say that it seems that most people who think God is speaking to them often say or believe things that contradict a clear reading of Scripture, or otherwise are proven wrong.
Given the recent news of Cain dropping out of the running I think we could question why God wanted Cain to run. If God really wanted Herman Cain to run, was it so he would drop out? Or, maybe he didn’t really hear from God.
I think that often times when people, even well meaning Christians, believe they are hearing God speak to them that it is instead their own emotions and expectations leading them to believe that they are hearing from God. And, when some rather charismatic leaders are involved and the right atmosphere it is even easier for people to be fooled.
With all of that said, seeing as how it is unlikely that I’ll be posting about Herman Cain again, I thought I would share a clip of him singing. The man has an amazing God given talent for music. Enjoy.

I want Herman to sing me to sleep.
Nothing cleans the skeletons out of your closet like running for president.
Cain is a fine upstanding Protestant who believes the Spirit speaks to him and tells him things. The question is not why God wanted him to run.
The question is why do supposedly good people accept a "free" Press who sets about destroying the candidates of a particular political party. The Press made it unacceptable to even utter Barack Obama's middle name let alone inform the public about unsavory aspects of his personal life.
That kind of malevolent injustice should trouble people of good conscience regardless of creed or political persuasion.
God also said, "Thou Shall not Commit Adultery." I guess Cain just wasn't paying attention that time.
@Veronica_Leigh@xanga - What about President Clinton whose seman was found on an intern's dress? Yet he was elected to two terms and his supporters just explained it way, "Everybody does it, so what!"
Why are GOP candidates held to certain standards and Democrat candidates not held to any standards at all?
The problem is not God and Herman Cain. It's God and the American people.
Maybe God wanted him to run just so that Cane could sing publicly and touch lots of hearts:) I mean, really, who knows. In my life, I have definitely seen that God still speaks to us today through the Holy Spirit (I also believe that everything God says will be in agreement with scripture). I would not be saved now if He didn't. There's a lot of things we don't understand and will never understand this side of eternity. I think it's best not to judge situations when we can only see the surface of them. Maybe God did want Cain to run, and maybe not for the purpose of winning. He could have been doing something in Cain's heart through this situation. You just never know.
People use "God told me..." as a crutch because it puts the hearer under some sort of obligation to listen and obey the message. Any time I hear that I just say "all that God has to say to me is right here in this book. I suggest you listen to it as well"
God told Herman Cain to run because it would help split the vote so Ron Paul could win.
He has a great voice, sort of awkward situation to bust it out, though.
God told him to run so his adulterous ways could be brought to light. He does work in mysterious ways after all.
It's inherently dangerous to assume that "God told me so" or the reverse "The Devil told me so". That's why everyone from a lowly Xangan to a Presidential candidate needs advisors. Whether it's a family or friends or, like Herman Cain hopefully had, presidential advisors.
With advisors we can bounce ideas back and forth and not come out with a literal 'God told me so', but maybe after arriving at conclusions thanks to insight garnered from friends and family or what have you, then(and only then) can you genuinely say something along the lines of 'I think God has this in mind for me'.
Hope that makes sense.
Perhaps God did tell him to run. It has tested him pretty good. God calls me to do stuff above my means sometimes just to test me, I feel. To show me where my faith lies, and whom I'm most willing to serve. I just hope he seeks God out on what his next move shall be. I hate how people sling mud, whether the stories are true or not. Some issues just aren't meant for the public eye that is so easily misinformed.
Which candidate are you hoping for?
Someone should remake that Bon Jovi song into "You Give God A Bad Name."
But then again, God = Love, so it kinda works already doesn't it.
@hectoramemnon@xanga - because President Clinton didn't use the ol' "God told me to do it" line.
@caroliiineee@xanga - good one. yes, god wanted him to run... far away. if he's touched anyone's life, they've gotta be grasping for thin air in believing this snake oil salesman. looks like he sold his oil to some and they were buying it like crazy and were gonna hang on to that no matter what. amazing the things some will believe.
@constructionpaperscissors@xanga - So if the excuse suits you, it's okay. That's what you're saying.
Clinton went to preacher-philanderer Jessie Jackson and made a very public display of "spirituality" just like the Pharisees did and just like Jesus taught against, but Herman's politics aren't right so destroying him is permissible.
That isn't right. It isn't fair. It isn't just.
I didn't read into Herman Cain's platform too much, but I will admit he was one of the better GOP candidates out there. (I myself am still a fervent Huckabee supporter, and honestly wish he was running.)
I wish there would be a president that would be unashamed to stand before the world and declare that there is one true god, as well as that Israel should be supported fully in its endeavors, but alas, in today's world of political greyness, things that are true and right apparently don't matter anymore.
politicians shouldn't wear their religions on sleeves.
@hectoramemnon@xanga - there was that one senator who resigned after scandal about texted inappropriate photo. why are all politicians held to different standards?
God must have told him to stop running too.
@hectoramemnon@xanga - there should be a separation of church and state. if herman cain found the lord telling him to do something, so what, if that's what he thinks he's hearing (maybe even voices). but don't drag it into the public arena. keep it personal. this is a presidency, not a run for sainthood or a religious thing.
@constructionpaperscissors@xanga - My objection does not concern the separation of Church and state. It concerns the application of a standard of behavior fairly regardless of creed or color.
What you are saying is that if politicians publicly talk about God, then they are subject to destruction by the news media.
That is not just.
@hectoramemnon@xanga - I agree with you. The Free Press murders the people that don't adhere to the company line, and hides facts about those who do, until it is too late. I am still angry that they would not investigate and report Obama's unsavory ties
. He did not deserve the Presidency. Neither did Herman Cain deserve the reporting as fact, what were accusations that may well prove out to be bribed testimony.
@Veronica_Leigh@xanga - I am still expecting the truth to come out, and this "fact" of adultery proved untrue. I don't just hope it, I'm pretty sure the timing had to do with the possibility of an unsanctioned black man being a viable candidate. I know how a single mistake of action can come back to haunt a person, and be made out as a major crisis.
@ninetailedevee@xanga - You could be on to something here.
Regarding public religious professions: why not? A person should not expect that to exempt them from public scrutiny, and it might bring more intense scrutiny. But if a person has skills that might be useful, and they are driven for a leadership role, I think they should be allowed to pursue it. But I think others should be held to the same level of examination as that candidate. Don't you agree?
@hectoramemnon@xanga -
"Why are GOP candidates held to certain standards and Democrat candidates not held to any standards at all?"
because the GOP has co-opted Christianity. if you guys want to be the "moral majority", you should try being moral first. in contrast, Clinton never presented himself as the best representative for any type of morality.
the issue isn't with the adultery, but with the painfully obvious hypocrisy. personally, i could care less who our leaders sleep with, as i don't really believe in marriage. i also don't care about a politician's religion, as long as they don't plan to burn people like me at the stake. but i DO care if they seem incapable of following their own self-professed moral code.
@too_pretty_to_die@xanga - well said.
God told me to run ... the Frack Away from Herman Cain! All those other women should have been so lucky.
