@DivaJyoti posted an interesting post about her views of true love, and it got me thinking about what I believe true love really is.
First off, as a Christian, I unashamedly base my ideas of love on the love I have experienced from God. This love is so huge that I believe it's impossible to define in words, but I'd like to take a few and have a stab at it.
1. SacrificeJohn 15:13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
Sacrifice is not just a concept present in God's love for us; it's meant to be present in our love for each other. This isn't just a theoretical concept. In the context of romantic love, this means that if you have any intention of seriously loving someone, you must be willing to give your life for that person on a daily, moment-by-moment basis. This doesn't mean saying, "I'd take a bullet for you, Honey." This means a surrender of selfishness and giving away of rights to that person.
2. Choice
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Infatuation is chemicals our brains that cause attraction. Love is something that chooses to put the other person first, even when the feelings are not there. No one has unending feelings; everyone experiences anger, hurt, sadness, and even just bad days. Love chooses in spite of those things. Love even chooses to care for the other person when that person is in the wrong. It's not dependent on the other person's actions or the circumstances. It exists because the one who loves makes the decision to love regardless of feelings.
3. CommitmentMatthew 28:20b And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
True love can last forever. It doesn't last forever because it's a rolling tide that sweeps people away on a wave of passion that consumes them for their entire lives. It's so much more valuable than that. Love is a lifestyle, a commitment to something bigger than oneself. It's a decision to die every single day to make way for greater life. If love just took us over, we wouldn't have to fight for it. But it doesn't work like that. To keep love, we
have to become better people, because it's so easy to lose it when we let our selfish desires get in the way. The kind of love that deserves the word
true is a commitment we build for our entire lives.
At twenty-six, I might not seem very romantic to most people. I don't want huge gestures or extravagant gifts. What I do want is to love and be loved truly, with the kind of love that is unbreakable because it comes from the heart of God.
