  • Growing Into Something New

By Amy at Make Me a Mary

It’s funny how when we’re little we all just want to grow up. I’ve seen it with all four of my kids. Two are adult-sized already and the other two are on the verge (#2 is 6’2″ already and still checking his height all the time). These are the years of obsessing about growth.

I look at them sometimes and am just speechless over what those tiny newborn lives have grown into.

But their mother is growing too and I can tell you it hurts. But I’d like to create a little speechlessness myself. I pray that the people who knew me when will marvel at what I grow into. Or I should say, what He grows me into.

May He grow all of us into something new, something He can use. And when the growing pains get unbearable, may we lean into Him–every day, every hour.

I think it is important for people to understand that they were created with certain natures, human nature and a unique personal nature.

Thinking that we have to become something new derails our pursuit after the knowledge of who we really are, who God created us to be. And it introduces constant doubt about whether we are the best newest lastest person we think God wants us to be.

From Christian philosophy we know about virtue: good character. Good character comes from pursuing qualities of excellence that enhance our freedom.  It is in freedom that we find out who God made us to be in the first place.  There is no new you or me.

There is you or me the way God created us. And we have to find out what that is.

Being a slave of sin, or vice ridden is the opposite of being a free man of good character who is able to discover his true nature and then dedicate ourselves to the service of God.

Though all men regardless of creed can pursue good character, it is through discipleship to Christ that we gain the fullest understanding of who we are. And we grow in that understanding all of our life.

    Good morning

    I especially liked :

But their mother is growing too and I can tell you it hurts. But I’d like to
create a little speechlessness myself. I pray that the people who knew me when
will marvel at what I grow into. Or I should say, what He grows me
    into.

May He grow all of us into something new, something He can use. And when the
growing pains get unbearable, may we lean into Him–every day, every hour.

I need the prayer of Jabez- last line- that I may not cause harm- I have grown kids- and can put my foot in it so easily- and so want to bless them [ only]- I think cos I try so HARD it is easier for stuff up- love the idea that god is turning it ALL to good and that He is in all and thru all and that he is polishing me into a pearl- remembering that the renewing of my mind is a life-long process helps me not to beat up, on myself so hard.

May God have HIS way in our lives, every moment, every hour, every day, until we meet him face to face.

    • About Me: The title of this website was born out of a prayer I began to pray when I became widowed: "Lord, please help me love you more". Over time, I grew to deeply admire Mary Magdalene for the way she loved her Saviour and was completely sold out to Him, and my original prayer evolved into "Lord, make me a Mary." I long to be at the feet of Jesus, too, learning from Him and taking Him in. I also aspire to be like Mary the mother of Jesus, because she exemplifies a total trust in God and in His sovereign plan, even in the midst of frightening circumstances.
