  • Do Happy People Drive Your Shopping Habits?

    By Dean Lusk

Do you find that you're willing to pay a little more for some products in order to shop at a store where the employees are noticeably more friendly than those of a competitive store with lower prices?

If so, how about the times you're cash-strapped and have to make every cent count?

Yes, this is totally out of left field and there is no theological tie-in here. I'm just curious. I briefly thought about tacking on a stewardship question or a note about doing to others the you would have them to do to you, but doing so would've been forced and disingenuous. I did, however, leave "stewardship" as a topic for good measure. (Here endeth my confessional.)

I hate my local Walmart because of the staff and the other customers. But Target is too far away and is demographically similar in any case.

I worked in retail for a long time, and because of that I hate shopping. If I could do my groceries online I'd be happy woman. I think a lot of customers treat staff like they are lower then them. Its like "You get paid so I get to treat you like junk". Cashiers are not your doormats.
Also, I think there should be a permanent ban on cell phones in stores, and restaurants.
As for walmart, I'd rather go without then shop in that place.

I'd drive past a business known for rudeness to get to a business known for professional aloofness.  Not sure I'd keep driving to get to friendly unless I was looking for conversation.  Same with price.  I'm willing to pay more for some things, but there's a limit.

We have a crap-ton of Targets where I live, and I'm not particularly fond of the one nearest to my apartment. Sometimes I'll drive a few miles out of my way to shop at a more welcoming store, so if you count gas prices, I suppose you could say I'm paying a bit more.

My boyfriend shops at Publix and hates shopping at cheaper places because the atmosphere is more miserable. I find this interesting since he's not financially well off and comes from a poor family. He thinks nothing of spending extra and doesn't try to buy things when they're on sale. My family is very well off, but I'm very frugal and can't bring myself to spend more at Target or Publix versus Walmart or Winn Dixie. I also tend to buy generics. All that said, I hate shopping whether it be for groceries, for clothing, or for anything really. I just try to meet my needs, spend little money, and get out.
