  • Is Drinking a Sin?

My parents and I just got into a huge fight about alcohol. I was trying to tell them that drinking is not a sin, but being drunk and letting the alcohol control your body is a sin. On the other hand, they were telling me that drinking is a sin but wine with dinner is okay. They even went further by saying that they refuse to attend my wedding if I have a bar there; they will only go if there is a limited about of bottles of wine during dinner, at the most.

I tried to tell them that wine and liquor are both alcoholic beverages -- it's the same thing. Am I right by saying this? Are there any passages in the Bible that explain a difference between wine and liquor, or passages that explain them being the same thing?

Also, my dad was saying that drinking is especially wrong for girls because they are weaker when it comes to temptations. Then he kept referring to Adam and Eve. This made me really angry.

Is drinking any alcohol a sin? Is there any difference between wine and liquor in terms of its sinfulness? What would you do in this situation?

In my opinion it's the excess that's the sin. Not just of liquor but of nearly anything.

I've been drinking since 13 years old and I'm 20 now. If drinking was a sin then I guess I'm kinda fucked on the whole heaven thing right?

If drinking is a sin this beer snob is on his way to hell! I drink 2-3 beers per day...
  • Garishi@xanga

To answer your questions, no, I don't know of any passages that discuss and differences between them.

Drinking in excess is the sin. I have a number of relatives who have drinking to excess and beyond issues. So I decided a long time ago, that it was better for me to just simply abstain.

Having said that. Is this debate, really that important? Are your parents really going to miss your wedding over alcohol? Are you willing to not have your parents at your wedding, just so that your guests can drink liquor? no offense to you, I don't really know you. But I am going to guess that there are deeper issues here than just alcohol.

You are right! The Bible is very clear that drinking alcohol is not a sin. Jesus did it and he was sinless. But, getting drunk is. "Do not be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Holy Spirit" (Ephesians) comes to mind first, but there are a lot, and I do mean A LOT. But, here is how my husband and I have decided to handle it:

Although we are of legal drinking age and have Christian friends that drink socially, we have chosen not to. The Bible speaks of not doing things that can be a stumbling block to other believers (or nonbelievers) (i.e.the passage about eating meat in front of a vegetarian friend). We do not want to hurt our witness with other people when we know that, here in America, beer often has the connotation with partying and being sinfully wild. It's the same reason we wouldn't get a tattoo. It's not sinful and if other people want to, that's fine, but we want to be above reproach in all ways and to have a clean witness.

    It's only a sin in Non-Catholic denominations.

The Bible condemns getting drunk pretty frequently, but I haven't seen anything against consumption of alcohol. It comes down to if the consumption of alcohol is leading you to sin in other ways, which happens frequently when you drink too much.

If drinking wine is a sin then that has extremely serious repercussions for all of Christendom...

  • intellectprofound@xanga

Well, I would assume that drinking is a sin, but didn't Jesus make wine out of something?  Anyway, I don't see a difference between wine and any other alcoholic beverage as far as that goes.

  • discover_hienie@xanga

haha a lot of ppl drink.. well i would say it wouldn't be a sin to drink sometimes but all the time. that is serious health problem

  • LadyGwenivere@xanga

Ok about the whole Adam and Eve thing.. Eve might have eaten the fruit first, but the devil tempted her and isn't the devil male? Anything I've read in the Bible about the devil is as a "he" so that, to me, means that root of evil is male.
About alcohol. Booze is booze, and no drinking is not a sin. Jesus himself turned water into wine. And it wasn't cheap wine either, as the guests at the wedding said that most hosts serve the best wine first, but this best wine was saved for last. So if drinking is a sin, why would Jesus turn plain water into the best wine?
Getting drunk, yes is a sin.
If your parents are ok with a glass of wine over dinner, then having a beer should be fine as well.
When my hubby and I got married we chose not to have any alcohol. And that was because there are several recovering alcoholics invited and I did not want to cause them to fall.
Good luck, and just remember.. Its YOUR wedding, its YOUR day. And if your parents want sometime to have on the table over dinner, go with a sparkling cider. Much cheaper, no alcohol, and no drunks at your reception.

I agree that getting drunk is the sin, not drinking, but I would also say--If there's a bar at a wedding, someone's going to get drunk. Someone there is going to drink to excess. It's virtually a 100% certainty. I wouldn't want to facilitate that at my wedding. Do you?

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

The sin is being led astray, but it's so easy to be led astray, even for people who try to drink moderately (i.e., even a lot of lower drinkers overdo it at least sometimes). I choose to skip it altogether.

@Chibi_Son_Gokou@xanga - Technically, all denominations are denominations of Catholicism, if you look at the history.

  • God@mancouch

Jesus Christ and the disciples drink wine all the time.

  • fromprivatetopublic@xanga

i don't think drinking is a sin, but drinking too much to the point where you're unable to control your actions is a sin!

  • mtngirlsouth@xanga

WOW. Jesus very first miracle was turning water into wine at a WEDDING!!!! There are verse that make it clear that alcohol (strong drink) is not sinful in and of itself:

    Proverbs Chapter 31:
Pro 31:4  It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Pro 31:5  Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. Pro 31:6  Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. Pro 31:7  Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

    Psalms:
Psa 104:14  He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; Psa 104:15  And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart.

    I Timothy:
1Ti 5:23  Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.

    Ephesians:
    Eph 5:18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Drinking AT ALL is not sinful. Drinking all the time is, or neglecting your responsibilities because of it is. And since so many people have a hard time learning where that line is, it can be a better policy to just avoid it altogether.

I think for some, with the addictive type genetic frame work in their systems, drinking will lead to sinful behavior that destroys families.  Many of us know this because we've seen it in our own families, or in others.  For those with no known such tendencies, it's no crime nor sin to imbibe occasionally, and even if you are home alone and have a little too much, it's not like you've been a naughty, bad, person.  I used to think it was really special to have a drink or two on holidays and other festivities, but now I find it bores me, and I don't like going to places where other people get loud and drunk.  For those with Aides, or other immune deficiency diseases, a little wine prior to eating whets the appetite, and doctors will order this routinely.  I took care of a Jewish gentleman while still in nursing who was 105 when he died.  Prior to dinner each day, I gave him four ounces of vodka, and a raw onion.  So obviously for him it was a medicinal situation, and wasn't abused.  Make no mistake.  Death from alcohol abuse is hideous and painful, and also leaves behind many relationship deaths.

I'm not much of a drinker but I loveee cocktails. It's never enough to make me tipsy so drunk is out of the question. As long as you're responsible and not excessive about it, I don't see the problem with it. Your parents seem to be using this whole thing as an excuse to prevent drunk people at your future wedding-0-

    Ecclesiastes 10:19

19 A feast is made for laughter,
       wine makes life merry,
and money is the answer for everything.

I don't know about the Bible but drinking alcohol ..even wine.. is a sin for Muslims.. and Islam is an Abrahamic religion.

  • headtrippp@xanga
  • f5ye_angel5@xanga

No. It's only if you're doing it too much because you're damaging your body and that's a sin.

  • denimmusic777@xanga

drinking is not a sin... the Bible explicitly says do not get drunk... going to heaven is not contingent upon what you put into your body but rather upon whether or not you have Jesus as the God of your life.  Which is why I do not like today's conservative Evangelical ideals... justification by not smoking and drinking is today's theological principles... sadly... Mark Driscoll puts it this way... "Jesus+nothing=everything" which means you can't tag on that Jesus plus doing or not doing things gets you into heaven.  It's gotta be only through Jesus that does it...

now getting drunk... that is sinful... I apply what Mark Driscoll says which is not get drunk, don't get others drunk, and don't break the civil law... otherwise... enjoy your drink...
