Mark 12:30-31.
Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? [there is] none good but one, [that is], God.
1. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.
2. Love your neighbor as yourself.
what musterion99 said, trying to be more like Jesus, and what it says in Romans 12. :D Also, not being materialistc, sexually immoral, etc. Basically live to please and glorify God, not living selfishly for yourself.
To be like Christ which looks like what @musterion99 said. It boils down to the greatest and purest of love, which consists of the greatest of obediences (but is not solely obedience).
To love one another as God loved you first so, basically, what @musterion99 has said! Starting with that everything else deduces fairly naturally. If ever you are in doubt as to what your should do to be faithful to your Christianity, chose the most selfless, loving path and trust that God is leading you.
Presupposes there is such a thing as a bad Christian. Will that be our next question? "What does it mean to be a bad Christian?"
@JerusalemHill - I like this answer.
The next genuine Story book jesus believer to step up and legitimately manifest the promises already a given to such a believer, will be the first outside of the Story book throughout history.
@JerusalemHill - Props to you. Excellent reply, and so concise! (A struggle for myself!)
I don't think any human being is good, the only things about us (believers) that are good are the things Christ helped us change, by the Holy Spirit, so that we could be pure in God's eyes.
Only God is good, that is why Jesus came to save us, and after He ressurected He gave believers the holy spirit to guide them in truth.
There isn't anything we can do ourselves to be good, but by trusting in Jesus, and following Him, He can make our bad ways good.
What makes a person who does not believe do something "good"
I think that would be our conscience, which was given as a gift by God to humans.
We are the ones who decide to hold onto it or not, and I sure hope everyone does!
Our consience is what tells us what is right and what is wrong. That is why people usually feel guilty when they do something to hurt someone else.
@musterion99@xanga - perfect answer
@BeautifulB_227@xanga - Thanks. You can't go wrong quoting Jesus.
A good Christian believes in the essentials and acts on them. As question one intimated, what the essentials are is a moot question.
In agreement with musterion99@xanga, I would like to also point out that you cannot be "good" simply by avoiding sinful actions. It requires a proactive stance. I agree that it comes down to love, because God is love. But we must remember that "love" is a verb.
"Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins." James 4:17, NIV

How to be a "Good" Christian 101:
1) KJV Bibles Only- everything else is watered down and tainted by Satan!
2)Tithe or you cheat God
3) Dresses & skirts 3 inches below the knee if your a girl, shirt & tie if your a guy
4) be at EVERY church service or have a written excuse, otherwise the elders will call on you!
5) don't sit in the last pew in the back- everyone knows that is "Back-slider's Alley"
6) If you go forward at the end of a service you better never sin that one again or next time you go up, you will be gossiped about
7) If someone asks you "If you died tonight, are you sure you'd go to Heaven?" You must be able to quote the entire Romans Road by heart, Chapters & Verses included!
Now for the Real answer: musterion99 got it right! and here is the scripture that it came from: Matthew 22: 36-40 :)
