Fired by Oprah for Too Much Jesus-Talk
By Matthew at Jesus Needs New PRI read this story on one of my favorite blogs–Gawker.com.
The headline is catchy: Oprah fired me for talking about Jesus!
While I believe this story could be true, I’m also skeptical since its source is Kitty Kelley, the well-known biographer (of mostly famous people) with a knack for stretching the truth into best selling books.
The “me” in the story is Jo Baldwin, Oprah’s first cousin. And according to Kelley’s story at Gawker…
Shortly after Oprah Winfrey became a national sensation she hired her first cousin Jo Baldwin to be her speechwriter. Later she promoted Baldwin to VP of her company Harpo Inc.
Kelley writes that Cousin Jo was contracted to work for Oprah for three years. But by year two, Oprah fired Cousin Jo without notice. CJ told Kelley…
I heard from someone later that she got rid of me because she got tired of me talking about Jesus all the time…
And here we see a classic Kitty Kelleyism… Cousin Jo heard from someone (Who?) that she was fired for yapping about Jesus too much. Cousin Jo then goes on to tell Kelley about Oprah’s affection for Shirley MacLaine’s books.
…Oprah made me read [the books] but I didn’t think much of [them].
So Oprah is a follower of Shirley?! People actually did that? Wow…
Cousin Jo, a tenured professor at Mississippi Valley State, is also an ordained minister who preaches at two churches every Sunday, goes on to tell Kelley a whole lot more. You can read the whole story here.
Kelley ends her Gawker.com piece with this final quote from Cousin Jo…
“Mainly, Oprah wanted to shame me for being a follower of Jesus as if to say, ‘What is He doing for you that’s so great?’ Oprah inflicts emotional wounds that could lead to physical illness, if they aren’t healed. My faith has kept me from getting sick [over her].”
Again, I can believe this story. But I also suspect these types of situations happen when family and money is involved. And I’m sure Oprah has a lot of relatives out there wanting to cash in…
And too…Kelley’s biography of Oprah (Oprah: The Biography) just released in paperback and THE ABOVE story is value-added content available only in the paperback.
And I wouldn’t put it past Kelley to think: “Well, I couldn’t sell any books by telling America that Oprah is a lesbian, maybe I can sell a few paperbacks by getting them to believe that she hates Jesus!”
Or…
…perhaps Oprah hates Jesus. Or maybe Cousin Jo talks about Jesus like the fundamentalists I grew up with (was she payed for the story?)
And perhaps if I was a follower of Shirley, I might have fired Cousin Jo too (especially if I was Oprah!)
Again… it’s Kitty Kelley… so you never quite know what/who to trust… you just know she’ll do anything to sell more books.
Thoughts?

Rich people depend on money because money is their God. They don't let anything else get in their way.
@Chuckt - In her defense though, (even though she IS rich), it's possible that she denies Jesus on an ideological level. Whereas, even if she were lower middle class, maybe she would still deny him. From anyone not extremely exposed to the faith with a positive perspective, their point of view could be that (like she said) "I haven't seen anything significantly "good" come out of christians, that hasn't come out of non-theists, or agnostics", or "Religion of all types are the only thing wrong with the world" (due to seeing all the wars waged in the name of the christian "ideology", compared to seeing the amount of wars that weren't waged on faith-based ideas). Those are common arguments I have heard from people in such stances.
I have personal knowledge of churches that sent teams and tractor trailers full of supplies down to Louisiana because of hurricane Katrina. I know Christians who personally went down there on their vacation to help hammer and rebuild.
@LifesCollage@xanga - Don't people who disparage Christians ever get tired of carelessly tossing these undocumented, spurious claims which supposedly describe the majority of Christians? Somehow that is supposed to end the discussion right there. It will surely seem full of holes when they are face to face with Jesus.
Criticizing Christians as being human like all other sinners is weak. The problem that the unsaved have is THEIR sin, not the sin of Christians. Christ died for the ungodly.
I dunno about this (both the biographer and the cousin have a lot of reasons to lie or to exaggerate the truth) but I did hear an interview Oprah once did where she talked about leaving the Christian faith because she once listened to a pastor talk about God being a jealous God, and she couldn't get her head around that. She wondered how a perfect, loving God could be prone to such petty human emotions as jealousy. So, instead of researching further, and making an effort to understand it, she went on her "own spiritual path." I don't think she hates Jesus. I think she just likes to believe what she chooses to, and then discards the rest, like a lot of people. To me, it's just denial and fear...fear that maybe there is an absolute truth and that maybe God is a jealous God, and all this time has been wasted on trying to find a god that's more suited to what she envisions a god should be. A god more like herself, I guess.
She may be wealthy and have quite a bit of influence and power, but she is no different from anyone else who can't see Jesus for who He is. No matter how many times she thinks she's finally found her answers, she'll still be looking, and that's really sad.
I'm not sure I really care either way.
"If you love me, you'll obey me". What's the difference between openly professing hate for Christ and expressing it daily through denial of Him?
Here's a sobering thing for us Christians, though; we should be very careful about contenting ourselves with fruitless stories... we need to be concerned about becoming living testimonies of Christ again. We're losing that fight right now, in part, cause we're more concerned people like Oprah than we are about ourselves.
There are little things that Christians do all the time that go unnoticed. Some of us work a little harder on the job and take care of things that other people don't care about. One of my friends witnessed an accident and he stayed to give police his statement when he could have left like so many people could give excuses that they don't have to be involved. When my neighbors called on me when they were in an accident, I went and helped them. When the church needed my assistance and asked for volunteers, I went.
Some of our friends have adopted kids from other countries. My wife took a job teaching for a school that doesn't pay a lot because it is a ministry. What do people mean by we're not doing anything?
Are we all not valuable because we don't have a greater means that a millionaire or a billionaire? Your government paid to repair Mosques around the world to improve its image in the world even though there is this alleged separation of Church and State and yet if there isn't enough money left over because the liberals helped themselves to the money in our pocket, it is somehow our fault that we can't do more?
Recognize the attacks for what it is. The emergent church is trying to grow by attacking other Christians and churches in an effort to try to convince the unlearned that it isn't working so they can have your money.
@quest4god - Beats me man. I see the whole endless feud between believers and non-believers to be trivial and pointless. The only ones who will ever see reason from either side are people with open minds, and no prejudice at hand, no matter their personal beliefs. Everyone will see who is right in the end, and just take joy in that fact.
@Chuckt - Well I personally applaud your good deeds, and I respect what you do. As would most people I think. But I think it depends on the person for the most part, some people will do that, some people won't. The people who don't initially, but do in the end are probably impressionable people, and any life-changing ideas might sway them to want to help others, whether it be a conversion to christ, or something of the sort. I'm most certainly not discrediting the church's ability to bring out the best in a lot of it's members. But I think that kindness and compassion doesn't need to be done in the name of christ, it should be done out of pure love for fellow humans. I think everyone can agree to that..

Oprah claims she's a christian and not a new-ageist(she resents even being called such), however, I don't get her, one day she has a pastor or gospel singer on her show, next day she has a scientologist. I don't know what to say about her these days.
Weren't her parents Christians though? I thought I read somewhere that they wanted to name her Orpah, Naomi's daughter-in-law from the Bible, and her name was misspelled as "Oprah" on the birth certificate.
@Fatal_Lightning@xanga - So true!
I wonder if there are other factors in the firing process. I am a Christian too but, you never know who may be offended by you constantly throwing your Christianity in their face or who may not share your beliefs. It's fine to say what you believe in, but shoving it down someone's throat is too much!
