  • Are Women More Forgiving than Men?

By Dave at The Mockingbird Blog

At long last, the truth is out! A brief and very interesting but - let's face it - pretty inconsequential report from Medical News Today, concerning a study from The University of the Basque Country, ht JD:

According to the study, parents forgive more than children, while women are better at forgiving than men... "A decisive factor in the capacity to forgive is empathy, and women have a greater empathetic capacity than males", Carmen Maganto, co-author of the study and a tenured professor at the Psychology Faculty of the UPV, tells SINC.

What drives forgiveness? Children believe that "one forgives with time", while parents point to reasons such as "remorsefulness and forgiving the other person" and "legal justice".

The authors of this study say that parents who have forgiven most over the course of their lives have an increased capacity to forgive "in all areas". Parents and children use similar definitions of forgiveness. Not bearing a grudge, reconciliation and understanding-empathy are the terms most used by both groups to define forgiveness.

However, there are greater differences between men and women. Both see "not bearing a grudge" as the best definition of forgiveness, but men place greater importance on this characteristic.

    Hmmm....

    lol forgive?

a : to give up resentment of or claim to requital for... heh how can you insult perfection?
b : to grant relief from payment of debt... possibly here but.. you will permanently owe her...

: to cease to feel resentment against (an offender) heh lol not hardly lol maybe bury it deep but only for ammunition later lol

they say a woman can forgive but never forget lol i say she forgives only to rack up later points against lol

I can say women are forgivers but in more of a deceitful way.

Doesn't it say in the Bible that we are to forgive others as God forgives us? And that if we are not forgiving of others, then God will not forgive us?
Men and women are very different creatures. but I have found other women much less forgiving of others then men. Except in the case of their children, then it seems to be about equal. The other women I have encountered in my life seem to like holding grudges and being bitter, not walking in the freedom of forgiveness. Thats mostly why I don't have many women friends, I'd rather be lonely then be with a bunch of gossipy bitter busy bodies who like to rip everyone else apart in their spare time. And this is women from Church!

"Women have a greater empathetic capacity than males"

    I KNEW IT!

Very true. I know more females with a greater capacity to forgive then men do.

This begs the question...do men do more things requiring the forgiveness of women?

Hmmm... I'd say there's a possibility that women are designed to maybe have more empathy than men, allowing them to have a larger capacity to forgive... but that doesn't necessarily mean they follow their design.

"Hell hath no fury such as a woman scorned" or something along those lines right?

I think women are "more forgiving" because there are more things women think they need to forgive men for but in my experience men don't get nearly as upset as quickly about things that's why teenage girls have way more problems than their male counterparts. Face it women you get mad easier than men because you're "more sensitive" is it sensitive or is it just easily offended. From my experience men just joke more and usually mean no harm or offense. Its just how we love :)
