  • Confession: There's an App for That

By Matthew at Jesus Needs New PR

Image found at The American Jesus.

You’ve probably heard: The Holy Catholic Church has blessed an iPhone App called “Confession”. If not, here’s the news link from the BBC.

    Some of its features include:

-Custom examination of Conscience based upon age, sex, and vocation (single, married, priest, or religious)
-Multiple user support with password protected accounts
-Ability to add sins not listed in standard examination of conscience
-Confession walkthrough including time of last confession in days, weeks, months, and years
-Choose from 7 different acts of contrition
    -Custom interface for iPad
    -Full retina display support

So I was curious about this app, and since it was only $1.99 (which seems to be a much cheaper option for the forgiveness of sins), I decided to buy it despite not being Catholic. Because I was curious…

    1) You have to sign up for an account

Signing up for an account doesn't "convert" you. At least, I don't think it does...

    2) Your confessions/sins are password protected!

Passwords aren't necessary when the Holy Spirit is involved--the Holy Spirit is a really good secret keeper.

    3) After signing in, you examine your conscience using the Ten Commandments.

Unlike the real Ten Commandments, Confession's Big 10 come check lists. See images below for detail...

For instance, if you select Commandment 6--You shall not commit adultery--you receive a checklist of sub-sins that the Catholic church categorizes under commandment #6 (see below)...

If you've committed one of these sins since your last confession, you simply touch the little box next to the sin and Confession will remember it for you!

    4) Select your sin(s)

This is the checklist categorized under "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife"...

This is what guilty looks like...

    5) Now, it’s time to confess! You begin this process by selecting the “confession” option…

I'm not Catholic, which is why it's been so long since I last went to confession...

Then, you receive a list of your sins...

    Repent...

    6) You are FORGIVEN…

    7) Then you receive a nice quote from a saint!

    And you’re done…

And the words of Tweeter Mike

A confession app for Catholics. Now Midwestern Protestants need a “let’s not talk about it” app….

hahah! Father Dan who leads my RICA class was talking about this! He said it is really good..but he used someone else's app so now it looks like they sinned loads.

  • NightCometh@xanga

First of all: it's not the Holy Catholic Church.  It's the Roman Catholic church.  Get those straight, and you'll be in a much better place to write an article about something you don't even understand.  If you are a Christian, you are a member of the holy catholic church.  It's in a creed or two you might have heard of...depending on if your church bothered to use creeds.

Second, you must be living under a rock in regards to this app.  Seriously...you've never heard anyone Catholic talking about it?  It is not to replace confession with a priest.  It does not forgive your sins.  It is only a tool to help people remember what they need to discuss with the priest.  Get that?  A TOOL.  Kind of like those devotional books I'm sure you have used that ask questions at the end of a chapter and then have you fill in blanks with your response or a prayer to God. Do people treat those like they replace prayer?  Do they write blog posts mocking them?  Maybe, but I've not seen it.

Do you seriously have nothing better to do than criticize something you obviously don't understand?
I'm fine with criticism.  I do it myself.  But holy crikes...please learn about what you are criticizing before you write a freaking featured post mocking something like this that is sacred to many people.

Passwords aren't necessary when the Holy Spirit is involved--the Holy Spirit is a really good secret keeper.  - This is just rude.  You saying the Holy Spirit isn't involved with Catholic confession?  Huh?

Unlike the real Ten Commandments, Confession's Big 10 come check lists. See images below for detail...

The "real" Ten Commandments?  Are these fake?

Your tone is amazingly sarcastic.  You are a pastor?  FORMER Christian magazine editor?  Hmm...did you build people up and lovingly correct them?

I'm sure you can tell I'm a little bit irked.  I hate seeing my brothers and sisters in Christ mocked, and I hate it when people write about what they don't understand and then mock things that don't even exist.  PLEASE think about this before you go writing about more things that involve Christians.

But since you are probably not even on Xanga/Revelife and just someone the editors publish, you'll never see this comment...so I guess I'll just be talking to myself.

  • Ancient_Scribe@xanga

You do not receive forgiveness through this app; it is designed in particular to assist those who have been away from confession for a long time and have forgotten the graces of the sacrament.

  • Stacey@xanga

I used to be Roman Catholic, but then I found out about all the lies.  I found grace through faith in the LORD JESUS CHRIST.  The Bible says there is ONE God, and ONE Mediator between God and man.  The MAN Christ Jesus.  (read not Mary.  She was a good woman, but she is not a mediatrix) Most of my family is still Catholic.  I pray for them constantly.  Pray for those that do not know the truth.

  • Stacey@xanga

@NightCometh@xanga - by the "real 10 Commandments" I think s/he might mean about the Catholic Church omitting the one about graven images.

  • NightCometh@xanga

@Stacey@xanga - The Catholic church doesn't omit that or any other commandment.

  • Stacey@xanga

    @NightCometh@xanga - with all due respect, http://www.jesus-is-lord.com/tencomma.htm

  • NightCometh@xanga

@Stacey@xanga - Are you going to trust a (very hard to read) fundy Anti-Catholic website over actual Roman Catholics?

  • NightCometh@xanga

@Stacey@xanga - Since we are posting links, here is a link to Exodus 20 in the NAB:

    http://www.usccb.org/nab/bible/exodus/exodus20.htm

  • Stacey@xanga

@NightCometh@xanga - I was an actual Catholic, and I know that Thou Shalt nor covet thy neighbor's wife and Thou Shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods was separated into two commandments, and we wore Jesus on our crucifix necklaces.  (He's not there anymore, he's risen)

  • rusty0505@xanga

@Stacey@xanga - dear sister... you have been lied to. i apologize on behalf of any of those within the Catholic Church who may have hurt you in the past. i apologize on behalf of any of those outside of the Catholic Church who, by no fault of your own or perhaps even theirs, if they were simply going with what they know, have taken advantage of your ignorance or have spun and miscontrued Catholic teachings.

the pure and simple Truth (which i recently posted on), is that EVERYTHING the Catholic Church does, teaches, says, holds true, loves, promotes, and honors is all because GOD LOVES YOU and wants to share His Divine Life with you in its fullness!!

i know this first hand. i've been outside the Church and now I'm happy to tell you that I've been continually drawn ever more gently into Our Lord's loving arms by way of His Bride, Our Mother Church. YES! Our Lord is Risen, but that's only part of the Story. Yes, the Resurrection gives us hope that we can be united in overcoming death, but it through the grace of the Cross, the very same grace that comes to us through the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist (which actually gives the Crucifixion meaning, as you wouldn't know that Jesus' execution was actually sacrifice and atonement for sin unless you were with Him the night before at the Last Supper celebrating the first Mass)!!

thank you so much for praying for your family that they continue to seek, find, and live Truth. i pray the same for you, as well as myself. however, please do not maintain a posture of false humility and hidden arrogance. sure, saying that you'll pray for someone sounds charitable, but it can also come off as incredibly holier-than-thou. the only aspect Jesus told us to imitate of Himself was his humility. that means that we should be daily recognizing that we don't have it all figured out and asking the Father to teach us His way. Again, because HE LOVES YOU, He gives you and all of us a Church that is guided and guarded by the Holy Spirit to teach truth and get souls to Heaven.

    AMEN!

if you have any other questions feel free to ask. while i personally don't have all the answers, i certainly have access to a Source that has a much better understanding of God and His creation than i do.

now, in regards to the post itself. the app, as i explained to a good friend of mine and as i understand it, was supposed to be an electronic version of the paper examinations of conscience that every Catholic parish should have at their confessionals. just as@NightCometh@xanga said, it's a tool. nothing more, nothing less.

  • Azn_Shenobi

    @Stacey@xanga - @NightCometh@xanga -

I'm not exactly sure if it would be a good idea to interject, but I will point out that there are indeed crucial doctrinal differences that separate Catholicism from Christianity. We do not consider Catholicism as a denomination of Christianity just as we do not consider Mormonism and Jehovah's Witness as branches of Christianity.

This doesn't mean Christians hate Catholics (or I hope not). It's not that Christians do not want anything to do with Catholics. I have Catholic friends. In fact, I have Mormon friends. However, if you want to compare Christianity and Catholicism, they are different. I'm not just talking about the 10 Commandments (there's more to be said about them, but eh).

That being said, I agree with OP, including the little satirical line at the bottom...Now Midwestern Protestants need a “let’s not talk about it” app.
  • ultravioletskies08@xanga

@Azn_Shenobi - Thank you. [Even with your addition, I concur. But yano, I don't wanna talk about it.]

It's all taken too seriously for my liking. Ugh. I personally thought this was hilarious, whether I agree with it or not, it's still hilarious.

Ok, an interesting software for people practising Catholicism.
  • GoldSilk@xanga
  • wrybreadspread@xanga

@NightCometh@xanga - @Ancient_Scribe@xanga - I've carefully read the post a couple times.  I think I detect a slight whimsical tone.  But what strikes me is how useful a (for lack of a better word) tool this would be in one's own spiritual meditations or devotions.

  • wrybreadspread@xanga

@NightCometh@xanga - ...and upon carefully reading your reply, I note you use the same word.  This is a literate cogent answer.  And I'm all about cogency.

  • Ancient_Scribe@xanga

@wrybreadspread@xanga - Exactly! A useful tool; I kept my comment brief and concise because while I suspected the post was more satirical than anything, it was so subtle that I didn't want anyone who didn't catch the tone to be confused. No app can substitute a personal encounter with Christ's saving grace!

That being said, I also love my sister @NightCometh@xanga's impassioned defense of the Church; she's a woman who loves the truth.

  • feelslikejuly@xanga

@Azn_Shenobi - Catholics are Christians. In fact, Catholics are the FIRST Christians. The denominations arose from the schism (Protests against the Church) that happened with Martin Luther in the 1500's. The sacraments are what set apart the Catholics from the Protestants.

If I get an I-Phone I think I may get this app. It's easier than carrying a piece of paper to examine my conscience.

  • ZombieMom_Speaks@xanga

@Ancient_Scribe@xanga - First, thank you for your kind and thoughtful response to the comment I posted on another blog (the one about defecting from the catholic church). I've been on xanga awhile and have never seen you post anything other than caring responses, a rarity around here (and something admittedly I need to work on myself).

My initial impression of this was that it was only supposed to help with confession. Glad to see that this is the case. It makes me wonder how many people think it's a substitute for actual confession?

Of course, I feel very sorry for the poor soul who would have to hear my confession:

"Um, hi Father...bless me for I have sinned. It has been 31 years since my last confession. Wait, I never actually gave a confession. See, I had just had my first communion when my parents left the church so I never actually did all the stuff I was supposed to do. I think I may still be catholic because there's a record of my baptism in some church somewhere. What? Oh yeah, my sins. I think I'm guilty of everything but coveting my neighbor's wife. I don't have an exact count of my sins or anything. Oh, totally - it's been awhile. I have this phone app thingy but it cut me off in the middle of tallying up everything. It started to smoke then the screen went blank. If you have a Sandisk card you might be able to download my sins then upload them to your own computer for further examination. I hope you have a lunch or something, though. It may take awhile to sort through it all. Just sayin'."

He would have to be a patient, patient man.

  • Ancient_Scribe@xanga

@ZombieMom_Speaks@xanga - I bring no kindness of my own, but only the kindness He has shown me; what was given freely should be freely given! So, you are most welcome.

If I were that priest I would be so grateful to be present when Christ took that burden of 31 years of sins off your heart. Isn't it amazing to think that Christ is so loving and gentle that He would take all that away and in return He might move the priest to ask you to offer a few short prayers in thanksgiving?

And as far as you being Catholic, a lot of that is up to you...

  • ZombieMom_Speaks@xanga

@Ancient_Scribe@xanga - Sometimes I think about it and I'd love to go back, but that's going to require a lot more time, work and money than I have at the moment. I tried  a few years ago and was told I'd have to get an annulment before I could receive the sacraments (if a catholic is cut off from them, what's the point?) and it's just too expensive because my current husband would have to have one too.

I also have two autistic children (and a lot of questions about how god views those who can't understand religion) who are not able to sit quietly still for a church service and my daughter has such serious  issues she's on a waiting list for intensive behaior therapy. My life is a whirlwind of meetings, KKI visits for my children and trips to the doctor (children with autism have compromised immune systems and seem to catch every little thing they're exposed to).

There are times that I think it would be very comforting, but with the turn my life has taken, it just isn't possible. It would be unfair for me to be dishonest and accept communion knowing I have no right to be there, and if I started RCIA the chances of me finishing are minimal.

I'll just have to wait and see if things ever become less chaotic. It's complicated.

  • StephanieP

@NightCometh@xanga - You're not talking to yourself. Thank you; I appreciate what you wrote.

  • Ancient_Scribe@xanga

@ZombieMom_Speaks@xanga - It will take time, of course, and God will be very patient; you are worth the wait.

I know that the results of remarrying without an annulment are difficult, but they are not meant as a punishment at all (though I understand if it feels that way). If you are cut off, what's the point? Oh my sister, God inflames our hearts with a desire for Communion with Him so that when we have wandered far off of His path we will try our best to seek Him out where He is desiring to meet us. It may take time and investment, but I hope that if you make the choice and effort you will grow in your love to be with God and that your reunion with Him in the Eucharist will be a joyful one.
Thank you so much for mentioning your children, and thank you so much for loving and caring for them in spite of how challenging it must be to have two with autism. If you have questions about how God views those who can't understand religion, please feel free to message me. But I am confident enough to share my belief that God looks upon your children with the utmost love; that they do not understand religion is no fault of their own, and He understands this. Do as you are able, love them, teach them as you can, and trust that the same God who entrusted you twice with His treasured children has them in the very palm of His hand, and He takes great delight in them.
Please don't see the Church's asking that you refrain from receiving the Sacraments as a loss of your right, or that you have no right to be at Mass. These are gifts for our benefit, as great expressions of God's love for us that we "might have life, and have it more abundantly." If you have questions about this I would be happy to receive them in a message (lest my comments on this post take up even more space!!!) and do what I can to help.
And yes, life is very complicated. Love does that! But love is worth it all. God bless you.
