  • 33 A.D.: a New Book that Asks who Really Crucified Christ

By Matthew at Jesus Needs New PR

    Not the Romans…

    Not the Jews…

    Not the Calvinists…

No, it was vampires! Yes, vampires… And you can read all about it in 33 A.D.

    According to the book’s description…

Jerusalem, 33 A.D. The vampires of the era have long sought to gain a foothold into Israel, but the faith of the local Jewish population has held them in check for centuries.

When one of their own betrays them to follow a strange young rabbi from Galilee, the elders of the vampire race dispatch Theron, a nine hundred year old assassin, to kill them both.

The rabbi’s name is Jesus. Killing him should be easy.

    Sounds compelling, huh?

hahahah uhhhhhhhhhh.. i mean if it's written well.. i would feel awkward reading a book about vampires that is about jesus though, and i'm not terribly religious.

Well, I would criticize it, but if you look at the Amazon bookseller page, you'll notice that it's got about twenty reviews, eighteen of which are five-star reviews!  What's more, every reviewer has listed every other five-star review as helpful.

How can this book not be excellent?

    *Spoiler Alert*

It turns out it really was the Calvinists.  They vampires were being duped all along.

These mash-ups of fictional pseudo-history seem to be really popular
lately. Reminds me of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Although I have
to admit I was hoping for something a little more serious when I clicked
    the link to get here.

hahahaha!!! such a ridiculous synopsis, but I am very interested in seeing where this story goes!

...ya know, I for one am sick of vampire-oriented fiction, whether or not it involves Christ...I know this is a Christian site, not a review site, but would those of U who read this blog plz let ppl know how overdone vampire fiction is?...figures it would be the Calvinists, though Calvin didn't appear on the scene for another 1500 yrs after Christ's death and resurrection...never let fact get in the way of a good theory...

I'm usually into vampire and zombie books, but with this.. not so much. Lets not desensitize ourselves into degrading Jesus please. Or poking fun at Christians for that matter. The true biblical story is more powerful and meaningful anyways. There are plenty of other vampire books to read.

as someone HUGE on Anne Rice vampire canon... i have to say, it cannot possibly be any worse than Twilight.

and, i don't see why everyone is so surprised.  in Memnoch the Devil, Lestat drinks Jesus' blood (and not in the symbolic, transubstantiation way).  especially with Anne Rice, who i grew up on, vampirism and Christian theology are closely linked.  from an outsider's perspective, i cannot think of any two groups more centered around blood (symbolic or real), immortality vs death, or good vs. evil.

wait...but Jesus is the light of the world...and vampires hate light....so how did they not burn upon contact?

Confused...and kinda intrigued...but mostly inclined to agree with @DavesBride@xanga.

    @too_pretty_to_die@xanga -

Transubstantiation actually is not the "symbolic" way, you mean consubstantiation.
  • too_pretty_to_die@xanga

@Megan - actually, i called it symbolic in the sense that the wine does not suddenly turn into actual red, thick, full-of-hemoglobin blood.  vampires would not find transubstantiated blood appetizing.

It uh, sounds unique?  I'd give it a try, because it piques my curiosity.

  • ScribbledOne@xanga

Why are vampires CRUCIFYING Jesus? Wtf.

If they turned Jesus into a vampire the book could say this, "Sucking the Sin right outta you!" hahaha

I know this discussion started a few months ago, but I thought I'd jump in.

I finished this book today, and consider it was worth the time. It's the first vampire book I've ever read but was intrigued by the synopsis and didn't mind the $2.99 Kindle price.

As I was reading it I wondered often if the author was a Christian as he handles matters of faith with respect, although a little clumsy in places.I had to go online to find if he was or not - he isn't - and in that search came across this site. There are many reviews out there, but this is a Christian site and it's worth having a comment about the respect the author shows to the person and followers of Jesus. I am a Christian and not at all offended by the book.

The story is not that the vampires crucify Jesus. But they recognise that his presence makes Jerusalem an increasingly difficult place for them, especially as one of their number has been drawn to Jesus, so they plan to get rid of him. He is too spiritually powerful for their assassin to approach, so he manipulates the Romans/Temple Priests etc, to do it.

The book is very well written, fast paced, complex in it's plot and full of the unexpected. The author has no axe to grind about matters of faith, in fact the way he honors faith, and especially honors Jesus, makes the book suitable for young adult groups etc, where people welcome unorthodox discussion and challenges.

Oh yeah, for the Calvin commenters above --- the resurrected Jesus has a conversation with somebody about free will ... I'd like to say more but wont spoil it for you. :)
