After 9/11: Religious Differences and the Revolutionary Idea of Love
By Sarah Cunningham at GodlySheepBack in 2001, I lead a 45-person disaster relief team to Ground Zero. Sadly, New York has recently become entrenched in tension again. You have probably heard an Islamic community center is planned to go in near Ground Zero. This has triggered some volatile stuff like…
Some radical Christians are planning controversial protests such as a mass Quran burning in Florida, which has already provoked threats of jihad from Islamic extremists.
A middle eastern cab driver in NYC was also recently stabbed by a man with background as a multi-faith peace group member.
There have been attempted vandalism/arson against Islamic buildings.
I’ve been thinking this might be a great time for some of us to offer a less-political message on this day. I’ve been trying to remember Jesus’ revolutionary ideas–to love our neighbors as ourselves, to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. I think no matter how a person views the Muslims behind the proposed community center (whether a person sees them as friends or enemies), the words of Jesus challenge us to respond well.
I asked Zondervan to do two things as a gesture of goodwill in the middle of the current arguments surrounding Ground Zero:
- Beginning September 13th , they will be GIVING AWAY the full, electronic version of Picking Dandelions: A Search for Eden Among Life’s Weeds through Amazon. (Part 4 of which contains the retelling of my experience at Ground Zero. Click here (PDF) to read an excerpt about my experience). Normal retail value: $9.99 Limited time only.
- They will be offering a discount code for rescue personnel around the country to acquire a deeply discounted copy of the paperback version of the book. I believe it will be the word RESCUE used at the Zondervan checkout I’ll confirm this later.

Godly Sheep - A good point of focus, especially with regard to 9/11:
The Sheeple Factor
In 1922, Walter Lippmann, an American elitist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, described the masses as a “bewildered herd” much in the same way Jesus described the masses in Mark 6.34, Lippmann outlined the shaping of public opinion through mainstream media in a concept termed the “manufacture of consent.” He underscored a perceived need by elitists to control the ignorant masses for the so-called greater good of society, of course, with them on top. The main difference between the elitists and Jesus is that elitists have historically evidenced a sick compulsion to use lies and deception to manipulate and enslave people while Jesus expresses a sincere compassion to use truth and revelation to liberate and save people.
Which sheeple group do you belong to?
Jesus' or Mass Media's?
On 9/11, Gallup Polls Show People Waking Up
While love is a revolutionary force, so is truth. Do you agree?
