  • The Power of Words: A True Story of Speaking Things Into Existence

Believing in the power of the spoken word used to seem way to new age for me to give into. I never believed that we could "speak things" into existence. Well, when I spoke my old apartment into a flood, I began to believe without questioning. The following is a true story from  my life. Whenever I doubt my God, myself, and my circumstance, I think back to this event and remember the immense power of the spoken word.

In 2008, I had a horrible living situation. I felt like I had the room mate from hell literally. She knew that I went to church. The walls in our apartment were paper thin which both of us knew full well. I heard her say: "I f***ing hate Christians! They're the worst people!" I was indeed in a trying place.

I didn't have a personal relationship with God back then. I was far outside of His reach. I've come to learn that "While we are still sinners God loves us" because He still loved me back then. While in my distress, I would rise everyday and say the following: "I hope this apartment burns or floods when I move out!" I didn't mumble it. I didn't say it out my mouth sideways. I said it with fiery passion! I wanted that house to flood or burn down when I was out and I meant it wholeheartedly. My words matched my desire and I was serious! I stipulated that I wanted the burning or flood to take place as soon as I moved out so they knew why the flood or fire came. If I only knew what I was speaking into existence....

Well, the day of my big move comes. I'm getting ready to pack the last few items on to the moving truck. I deliver my keys to the landlord and she stood in her doorway crying. "I just flooded my basement Eryn!" she declared. The hair on my neck stood up. I was filled with such guilt. I knew that her basement flooded because of my continuous speaking it into existence. She explained how the basement flooded and my heart sank. I knew that my words were responsible for the flood. The basement didn't flood until the day I moved out. Test God with a fervent and effectual prayer. He will show you that He is real.

Long story short, I couldn't move into the new apartment that day. Satan was all around me. By the grace of God, He worked on the heart of my old room mate and landlord. Both of them graciously allowed me to move back in. I immediately recognized why God chose to flood the basement and not burn up the house. He knew that I would need to return to that house to live. My apartment was on the third floor. The flood had absolutely no effect on my living situation; whereas, a fire would have. God was all over that place that day in August.

Believe in the power of the spoken word of a Christian. Even when I wasn't fully dedicated to God, He still heard my cry. He knew the reason behind my plea. My cry was legitimate. He knew the situation and the workings of evil better than I ever could or care to. That's God's business. I know a few things now though. I know that God will repay those who hurt His children. I know that God is gracious beyond measure even in our rebelion. I know that God takes our words seriously and proves His existence to us as soon as we are ready. I know that there is power in the spoken word of the ones whom God loves.

Biblically, there is power in a flood. God used floods to cleanse the Earth of unrighteousness in the days of Noah. God cleansed me of disbelief and renewed my faith in Him with a flood. Open wide the floodgates to God...literally.

Have you ever spoken something into existence? Has God ever showed you that He was real by manifesting Himself in your spoken desire?

it was not by our power that anything is spoken into existance. we are the creatures, not the Creator. without the Creator, we are nothing. like that billy preston song goes, nothing from nothing leaves nothing. now, i'm not discrediting all the wonderful pieces of art, music, architecture, literature, etc that we've come up with... but it was merely us using what we already had in new and different ways... we've created nothing new. the only thing that comes close to what i think this post is getting at, or what the title and end question would leave one to believe is a newly concieved child. even then, it's because God first created that person.

as far as what's address in the post itself... i still think it's misleading. it's by God's power. not yours.

The connection between our persistent thoughts and real world outcomes is striking!

Wow, interesting story. Thanks for sharing! We all need to be careful with our words, Christian or not.

i have always thought about speaking into existence, it was something that sparked from what i had heard in an interview, and since then it had stuck, this evening it came into my mind again and something told me to google " the power of speaking into existence" and your blog was the first link or the one that caught my eye, why the thought to google that sentence came to mind i do not know, but i just want to say what a lovely post.

I was led to do the same thing and heard the same thing as Magdalene....OMG..... One thing is for certain and two things are for sure....God (YESHUA=JESUS) is always confirming His Words...He said Prove Him/Test Him and see will He not watch/keep His Word....He's a Promise Keep....even in our mess....His Word is Bond....and His Word is Truth....
