  • What Do You Think About Birth Control?

Have a question you want us to ask?  Send it to us!

Birth control is a controversial topic in Christian communities, in part because of its sensitivity as an intimate subject.  There are Christians on both sides of the argument -- some in favor and some in opposition.  Many see the issue as a grey area and have trouble deciding whether or not it is acceptable.  An issue that causes such rifts can't be easily solved, but perhaps we can at least come to an understanding as to why or why not to use birth control.  What are your thoughts?

What do you think about birth control?

I think birth control is a way to responsibly plan a family according to the resources you have available. If God wants a baby born so bad, well, people have babies while they're on the pill all the time.

  • harmonyminusmelody@xanga

Catholics believe that birth control is "playing God" and going against God's will. Here's how I see it: HE'S GOD. If it's His will, I think He has His ways. If you take birth control and don't have a baby because of it, uh, it was His will for you not to have a baby. You can't mess with God's will because HE CREATED WILL.

i do not like the idea of birth control pills, but that's more about my problem with pills rather than birth control.

i'm all for condoms, and i think it's a much more natural form of birth control, because you're not interfering with the body's natural process (menstruation for women).

  • deepestrecesses

If you think birth control is wrong, then at least be consistent and condemn the use of antibiotics to stop the 'natural course' of disease.

  • LifeSux19@datingish

Birth Control Pills aren't always used to prevent pregnancy. They'e used for many other reasons. So I see no problem with birth control.

Birth Control is good... unless we want to the whole world to be like the Duggers!!!! Every year they have a kid! WTF?! Id tell him to keep it in his pants or get his tubes tide. Id rather quit while Im ahead and NOT have any more kids. By the time you have 15, I would think "How many more variations of our DNA can we get? We're done." And what about college and stuff. No, Birth Control is what keeps the population to a minimum. A-men to that!

  • pnigophobicpk@xanga

I would much rather use natural family planning and condoms.  I believe that life begins at conception.  Some other methods of BC just make it so the fertilized egg doesn't implant.  But, that's a personal choice, and I definitely understand others using the pill and the like.

    birth control is amazing

  • LadyGwenivere@xanga

birth control messed with my hormones so bad I wanted to kill myself. (literally).
If you are so worried about having a baby,, here is a simple way around it. Keep your clothing on and do not have sex. No sex = no baby. Easy. (this works for married couples too by the way).

  • foxes_have_holes@xanga

I understand arguments against Birth Control. My question is whether or not people opposed to it are opposed to intercourse during a time of the month when the woman is not menstruating?

  • lusciousddja@xanga

ITS USEFUL MEDICINE JUST LIKE OTHERS...NO BIG DEAL

  • CyanideNGunpowder@xanga

*Shrugs* Beats the hell out of an abortion.

Any reason we've had these "What do you think?" type entries lately? There was one on booze about a week ago, and "Do You Play Violent Video Games?" is still in the recent column.

  • merquryd@xanga

I started using it for reasons other than family planning way before I became sexually active.  I am now married and continue to use it for the same reasons but also for family planning.  My cousin got pregnant on birth control, if it's in God's plan it will happen, anyway.

I like the idea of bc in the form of pills. But birth control has been practiced since the dawn of time with the rythymn method, and other such things. :) I was on BC for a while and I can honestly say that based on my experience, I don't believe that it's something that God favors. Everything that happened SINCE I got on them said "NO" internally. It was a big fat "no". Then I finally came off of them, I have been blessed since. :)

Contraception has had an amazingly positive effect on the human species.

  • rusty0505@xanga

everyone needs to look up this amazing speaker. her name is vicki thorn. she provides a lot of scientific evidence for why birth control, or as she puts it, chemical controception is wrong. the jist of it is that there are MANY biological processes, things that go on in our bodies, that God created in us, that birth control disrupts. you'll have to listen to her talk... and while i'm here, i just need to clarify that her research is consistant with the catholic church's teaching on the matter. now, i know some of you have your own opinions about the catholic church. however, the church does not teach that birth control is evil just because it's evil... if it's a question of God's will... yes He's more powerful than birth control... but when you really think about it, birth control was created out of human's own brokenness. seriously, i'm having a hard time putting into words because i'm just really excited that this topic came up here on revelife on the exact same day that we talked about it in a theology of the body meeting at my school.

if at all possible, find this woman's talks. again, it is consistant with catholic teaching, yet she focuses so much more on the science of the matter than anything, including religion. just to go writing her or any catholic off just because we are catholic christians.

it pains me to see the faces and read the words of those who so openly accept birth control, or who so openly accept evil... and i know it's because there is a lack of understanding in our culture and moreover an apathy to filling that void. i pray for your redemption.

  • redhairedgrrl@xanga

@rusty0505@xanga - Then you will assume complete financial responsibility for every child that you father? And is it God's will that a person develops cancer, so we should not treat it?

  • OngishLyOngLee@xanga

i wanted to take birth control pills to clear my acne and relieve myself from my painful monthly visits.  but i was afraid i might get a serious blood clot from as a side affect, so i never got on board.

  • christianbassist@xanga

birth control and condoms seemingly have no morality behind them that stop a life, unlike the Plan B which is essentially abortion. Our culture in the US has used plan B like birth control as well abortion it seems. it's a terrible genocide that people are quick to ignore.

  • Errborne@xanga

I am against birth control pills. First off, I believe in life at the point of contraception. Sure, at taht moment you may not know you have a baby growing in you, but, nonetheless, it is a life. Research shows that birth control works in more than one way... it doesn't alway stop you from concieving. It is possible for the egg to be fertilized and then stopped from being implanted. which would then cause a spontaneous abortion of a fertilized egg. As for BC to regulate hormones and such... I am not as adimately against it as I am weary of it... It does have the potential to have long term negative side effects if used long enough (as do many drugs). Look it up. If you are going to have sex, there are other methods to minimizing your chances of pregnancy.. condoms, timing, etc...

@redhairedgrrl@xanga - ridding someone of cancer is not comparable to having a child/not having a child. Yes, every person should be able to financially support EVERY child they create. Take precautions, but KNOW the effects and methods of the precautions you are taking. Especially something internal like pills. There are other ways to prevent pregnancy. I don't think rusty0505 is saying don't be careful... but, the issue presented (at least in the specific post) is birth control ... in the form of chemical contraception. People should research all medications they take prior to taking them. Don't just take the Dr.'s words for it.

  • Bubbathecat2010

@harmonyminusmelody@xanga - @Shy___Away@xanga - People lie, cheat, steal and kill all the time.  Evil is never God's will.

Also, God created man with free will.  We are free to defy the will of God.  Defying the will of God defines sin.

So in considering birth control one must ask whether it is consistent with Church teachings.

  • Bubbathecat2010

@merquryd@xanga - You have just made the argument that it good to use birth control as a way to get rid of the consequences of the sinful behavior of adultery.

Such an argument is unethical.  Evil behavior begets evil behavior.  Committing the sin of adultery and then using birth control as a way to escape the consequences of it, clearly shows logically that birth control is evil.

That is the argument you just made and it is an argument that justifies sinful behavior.  If Christianity means anything at all, it means that Christians really need to carefully consider the rightness or wrongness of their actions.

  • interstellarmachine@xanga

I believe non-abortive birth control methods to be OK (assuming side affects are acceptable by the user). Be careful about the pill, some are abortive in about 1% of instances. Do your homework on it before you commit.

  • Ancient_Scribe@xanga

@Winsa@xanga - God bless you even more! And I'm sure he will.

  • too_pretty_to_die@xanga

if you're against contraception, you should be against things like in vitro fertilization, getting your tubes tied, and fertility treatments.  actually, you should be against all man-made medication in general.  what if God wanted you to die of cancer?  who are you to go against His will and have chemotherapy?
