The Ragamuffin Gospel, and Clutching Teddy Bears
By Sam Mahlstadt
I am reading The Ragamuffin Gospel (still) and have come across some jarring quotes. Like this one:The dichotomy between what we say and what we do is so pervasive in the church and in society that we actually come to believe our illusions and rationalizations and clutch them to our hearts like favorite teddy bears.
We hang on to appearances because we are afraid to be transparetly not good enough.
What are you clutching?

I once read an excerpt from that book about a recovering alcoholic in group therapy. He was in denial--until the group leader called up the man’s wife and got the real story.
The man had taken his daughter Christmas shopping and gotten her the gift her heart was set on. She was ecstatic.
Then he stopped at a bar--for something like 5 hours while she was in the car in sub-zero weather. He passed out in there. She was treated for frostbite and lost her hearing
As this story came out during the session, the man wallowed on the floor, screaming and weeping in remorse. The group leader told him either to walk out the door or jump out the window--the group had no time for fakers.
The man begged to stay. From that day on, he was a changed person. He became authentic--humble. His brokenness was his healing.
It’s one of the most powerful things I’ve ever read.
Great book!! Great quote. Keep sharing them.
Wow! What a thing to say...it's so true though. I've got to pray and think about what I may be clutching though. I think often we don't realize what it is we are still holding on to.
@wrybreadspread@xanga - Wow. What a story!
Sounds like a 'read me'!
@JCCroom@xanga - Yes, by all means. I have read it at least 3 times & have it on CD & have listened to it extensively. It will profoundly effect you, no doubt. Abba's Child is another!! LAW--
This is my favorite book (excluding the Bible). I have met Manning, who is DEFINITELY my favorite author. :)
