  • Dear Devil, We're Through

The Devil is a liar. The Scripture tells us that he came to kill, steal, and destroy. Most Christians believe that they live a life free of the the enemy. As long as they go to church every Sunday, read the Bible in the morning, and do good deeds, they think that the Devil has left them alone. But above being a murder, a thief, and a destroy, the Devil is a deceiver. He has plenty of clever ways to fool even the most devoted Christians. After all, we are but flesh and blood. Below, you will read a poem sent to us by kayla_fersherr who would like to share this piece as a great example of divorcing the Devil from every area of your life. Excerpts from the poem are included along with some food for thought and Scripture to guide you through this compelling and heartfelt "Good-bye" to the devils that fester in the lives of unsuspecting Christians.

    Dear Satan,

I’m writing you this letter to inform you that our relationship is officially done.
    You just lost one!
Cause for too long I’ve battled in my mind
    Your voice v. God’s v. mine

As Christians, we often think that the only voice that we wrestle with is ours and God's. But, this letter points out that our voice competes with God and the Devil's. Have you ever found that the Devil has been intruding on your thoughts? Read James 3:14-18

So I’m returning all your gifts
    Rejecting all your myths
See all this time I thought that I had control, but you were controlling this

One of the biggest lies that Christians like myself can  fall for is that we are in control. Just because a Christian is not possessed by a demon does not mean that he or she is not under some demonic influence. There are several references in the Bible to demons, spirits, and principalities. Please review these verses and prayerfully ask God if there are influences in your life that need to be removed. Read 2 Corinthians 2:10-11

Or the comedy spots where we sat and laughed enjoying ourselves all night
When they were joking and mocking the church like that situation is light
And explicit sexual content echoed through that mic
And I laughed like it was alright

It's so easy to get carried away in a pastime even if it is not godly. Now, I'm not suggesting that every activity that you participate in is only church related neither am I saying that you have to go and join the nearest God squad; but, we do have to be careful how we entertain ourselves. The topic of perverse media is a belabored one but that is because the media networks are flooded with inappropriate sexual content and illicit jokes. Are you passively allowing the Devil room in your life by not removing these opportunities for him to entertain you? Read Genesis 3:1-4 to see what happens when we let the Devil entertain us.

So I changed my number so you would no longer call
And I would no longer fall
But even though I did all that you still controlled me from afar
Because I was just trying to be a better person
Stopped clubbing, stopped sex, stopped cursing
Dropped friends, cause of greed stopped working

It’s like using filthy rags to take a bath
When the truth is my entire sin nature is bad
And me stopping those things never dealt with the wickedness of my heart
Are there certain people, places, or things in your life that you need to get rid of in order to walk more closely with God. Take a look at your closest friends, your favorite hang out spots and things that you enjoy. If Jesus came to Earth for one night only, would you introduce him to all of your friends, take Him to all of your hangouts and let him take part in everything that you enjoy? Read Titus 2:11-15

Even though the Bible says repay not evil for evil, I refused to believe
And your strings got me doing things that I can’t even help
Trying to love my brother but always thinking about myself

So I wrestled with the conclusion
Maybe I’ve been excluded from being able to live this Christian life
But then that sounds like your voice
You’ve influenced so much of my life

Selfishness is a symptom of being American. We are an individualistic capitalist society that teaches that every man is out for himself. Has selfishness kept you from loving other people? Are you so concerned with getting what you need, that you are inadvertently or overtly compromising the needs of someone else? Secondly, have you bought into the lie that living the Christian life is too hard for you? Well guess what, it's too hard for everyone. That's why we all fall short. It's part of our humanity. Have you stopped trying to reach the Godly standard of living because you think it's impossible? Take a few extra moments and think about where this thought originated. Every great man of the Bible fell short of God's glory, questioned God, doubted God, and was a sinner. If you are any of the above, you are perfect for using in the eyes of God. Read Philippians 2:1-4

Those events help me see how powerless I am
And the reality is there is only one way
And before I was set free, I had to realize I was a slave
I have no merit, virtue or favor with God
It’s Christ’ poured out lifeblood that saves

And I’m sick of it, my sin
I’ve defended it, time and time again
Dead in my transgression but now I’ve come on out of the grave
Because this new relationship is based solely by grace through faith

Every Christian sins. But, are you defending or harboring a secret place in your heart from God? If you're trying to do that, you're in a losing battle. God knows our inmost parts. He knows when we sit and when we stand. He created us piece by piece. We are brought into a relationship with Christ by grace through faith but do you really believe that? Or, are you still trying to make up for some sin or blemish on your soul? Do you believe that you are saved by Christs' blood and His mercy alone. You can't work your way to heaven. Just enjoy the blessing of salvation and acknowledge the gift. Read John 8:44-47

And my life is a result of what I believe
Since you shall know a tree by the root and the fruit
So rather than just dress modestly, I’m checking my heart too
Making sure there is no vanity
Or that I’m dressing to grab the attention of humanity
Because I know what I can do, if I remain in a relationship with you
My potential outside of Christ is extremely detrimental

How are you taking steps to remove the hiding places of the Devil in your life? Instead of just focusing on what's on the outside, how can you renovate your insides? Our potential to do harm is exponential outside of Christ while our potential to do good is fractional. What are some of the things you've done in life while you were outside of God? Compare those things to the powerfully moving good things that you did while you were living for God. How do these categories compare? What parts of your life do you need to amend for God? Read James 4:7

You see you helped me build a tower like you did with Nimrod
But I’m tearing it down for my God
By the way I’m clearing out my ipod
I’m giving you back all your music
    Couldn’t see it before
    This tool you were using
    Different song
    Different score
    Brought the same conclusion
All about lust, money, self and sex
Yet those things are the reason Christ was out to death
    Who you using next
Chris Brown, T-pain, souljah boy, ne-yo, Beyonce or Game?
Every artist motivation is the same
To take my heart away from the reason Christ came
I could say I’m saved all the while exalting men
Not a fanatic for Christ cause I’m a TI fan

Not to be the Christian in Christian-Dior up in the video with Kanye West
    Now I see
How he’s saying he’s Christian yet he’s exalting women, sex, and greed
And I said I was just listening to the beats
You had me so blind to the content
    I was so deceived
Didn’t realized Satan disguised as I was hitting repeat

We must remember that Lucifer was the angel of Music in Heaven. He has a gift and talent for musical things. That's why it's so important that Christians monitor what they allow themselves to listen to. Music and lyrics are the devils' domain and he's capitalized on these areas in our society. What music are you listening to? Is that hurting your spirit or edifying it? Read 1 Peter 5-9

So every lie you told me
    Like you being my homie
That I could rep Christ as long as we kicked it on the low key

I used to be a daughter of lies
You used to be my master
But now I’m at the feet of Christ with me box of alabaster
Because He redeemed me, set me free
And I will spend my time, all of eternity

Because I know I’m undeserving of His love
See I’m now covered in the blood of the Son
    So in case you forgot
I’m writing this letter to inform you that our relationship is officially done,

    You just lost one!

After you've read this letter, do you need to write a letter to Satan excusing him from your life as well? What would your letter say to him? How would you confront him and kindly escort from nesting in the secret and dark places of your heart? Read Matthew 4:1-11 for guidance on this letter you plan to write. Take special note at the armor of God that Jesus used to resist the Devil.
