What are you giving up/doing for Lent?
Personally, I'm doing an Eastern Orthodox Lenten fast. I'm a vegan Monday-Friday and a vegetarian on the weekends. But first, I'm kicking it if with a week of a juice and fruit fast. Also, I'm going to mix this all together with daily Lectio Divina of John 4, 9, and 11. It's going to be tough, but there are so many spiritual, emotional, physical benefits of fasting.
At Seminary yesterday we were invited to begin the season of Lent with these words:
You are invited, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, to observe a holy Lent, by self-examination, pentinence, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving; and by reading and meditating on the Word of God.
What about you? What have you decided to sacrifice or do differently during the season of Lent?

I have decided to fast every Friday. When I do eat I am not eating junk, mainly fruit, veg and meat.
Also to attend mass as much as I can through the week on top of my usual Suinday attendance.
I am also fasting every Friday... I plan to only drink water.
isn't the point of fasting to make it private and personal??
i'm not Christian, so i do the absolute reverse of Lent. rather than depriving myself, i force myself to take on new things :)
I deal with lint by cleaning my belly-button daily.
@Always_Thinking - No the point is to grow closer to God. You aren't suppose to over-exaggerate and tell everyone but if someone asks, you shouldn't hide it as though you were ashamed.
We are doing a church-wide Bible study in small groups. It should be pretty amazing, I'm excited.
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
I have not sacrificed anything for Lent bur reading this post is making me realize fasting would be a good thing for me.
@Always_Thinking -
Right. So, again. Don't over-exaggerate. It doesn't say to not tell people. Someone shouldn't be able to look at you and tell you're fasting. If you go around telling everyone that's not the same as responding to a question about it.@Biblerapture@xanga -
I agree! I'm not fasting for the reward
either. I'm fasting to give up something that I struggle with to tame
my body for better use in ministry.
God bless!!
@t_sheffield@xanga - Yes, well said. Great post.

Fasting is a good subject to discuss and I don't think you "lose your reward" by discussing it. I believe Jesus mentioned that idea with regard to boasting. Lent is one time a person can choose to fast but there are many reasons and really any time is good. A full forty day fast is powerful and rewarding:
