    Awesome! :)

To answer the questions: I have not been to Haiti, but I did meet a few Haitians while in the Dominican Republic this past summer (study abroad). Also, my Dominican friends have been affected some, but not horribly like the Haitians. Their facebook status' mention helping Haiti. :)

Do I plan on helping? I need to look into ways to help - thanks for the links!

I'm not sure how else we can help other than aid/money (or going there- but that's not an option for most!)

I wish I could go over and help but my hospital requires I have enough PTO to cover it and I just used mine up applying for time off to go to Africa.

You can also donate through worldvision.org who already has a fund set up too.

The best site for information on charities is charitynavigator.org; they rate different charities based on things like efficiency, size, etc.  I strongly recommend Partners in Health, which is Dr. Paul Farmer's organization (from Mountains Beyond Mountains) and is one of the few that still has functioning hospitals near Port-au-Prince.  Other excellent secular organizations include Save the Children, MSF (Doctors Without Borders), UNICEF, and ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross), but I think PiH is the best since they already have staff and buildings on the ground there (the others do to, but don't know how functional they are after the quake).

As Christian organizations go, World Vision is the biggest and best staffed; they have plenty of experience and are leaders in the field.  Compassion International, Samaritan's Purse, and World Relief are also excellent organizations.
Again, money is the best thing to give (since it's most liquid), and best to give early since this first week is going to be the most crucial.  While you can attach limitations to the money (e.g. that it should only be used for the quake relief efforts), it's not that recommended since it severely limits the speed at which money can get to the places it's needed the most.
Honestly, a lot of the best assistance will be from the US military when the carrier arrives with helicopters to transport and heavy digging machinery to excavate.

You can go to http://tinyurl.com/yb64e6c and donate money to the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention's efforts in Haiti.

    i concur with WasaiWarrior.

Partners in Health is a very reputable NGO that has been at work in Haiti for years; a donation to them will go directly to disaster relief efforts.

my fiance and a little girl I am adopting are in Haiti as well as soooooo many other friends. My heart is breaking. (I did hear yesterday afternoon that they (both my daughter and my fiance) have been seen and are ok for which I canot explain my gratitude, but all of my friends are not) Real Hope For Haiti (www.haitirescuecenter.wordpress.com) and Heart of Compassion (http://heart-of-compassion.xanga.com/) are both very good places to donate, These missions both are personal friends of mine and I know every penny donated will go dirrectly to the Haitian people.

@Dark_Chocolate_N_Haiti@xanga - How do you go about adopting a child from Haiti? Is there an organization that I can contact?

  • Dark_Chocolate_N_Haiti@xanga

@momzmybiz@xanga - There are many orphanages in Haiti and usually going through one of them works very well, I do not know about organizations here in the states that do international adoptions. My experience is a bit different because I lived in Haiti for several years and my little girl was abandoned at one of the mission clinics that I worked at. You could look at God's Littlest Angels, I think they have a web page. You could also contact a missionary friend of mine down there in Haiti who would have other contacts she could share with you. www.haitirescuecenter.wordpress.com Hope this helps, if you have any other questions or want more information feel free to let me know.
