  • What Does Christmas Mean To You?

Originally posted December 1, 2008, by Lildinosaur

With Christmas coming up in just under a month, people are already beginning to prepare for holiday festivities. In shopping malls, the red and green decorations are up, chocolates are selling, and the hundreds of toys and stuffed animals are on display. It kind of seems, through the whole jumble of it all, that people are beginning to lose sight of what Christmas really is.

Perhaps it's because we grow up with the season brought upon us that we automatically begin to celebrate come this time of year. When I say that, I mean pretty much what I said before, plus a tree and some characteristic lawn ornaments. A big meal and meeting with relatives you never see during the year also adds to what constitutes as a celebration. Maybe it's because of the massive amount of advertisements targeted towards us to make us feel inclined to beat the crowds to finish up our gift shopping. It really becomes a commercial jungle.

Don't get me wrong, I love the feeling that comes around Christmas time. Everyone's mood is simply elevated. I indulge in the decorations, and I sing the Christmas carols. Going to the mall around this time is great as well--while, even as adults, we all  secretly still enjoy seeing the big jolly elf smile. People also tend to be a lot more charitable around this time because giving really does feel that good.  I just wonder though, how often do we think about the origins of Christmas, and why we celebrate in the first place. And no, I don't believe Christmas these days should just be reserved for Christians--although it's the whole reason why it began was well, as you all should know. It's a great time for people to gather together. I definitely can't claim to be very devout and most years I'm not really thinking about why I join in the revelry.

Why do we celebrate Christmas? For those who aren't religious, what are your motives behind celebrating Christmas? Why do you think the season makes you so happy?

To me Christmas means being thankful for my family and friends and all that we have. It's about love.

Why do you think the season makes you so happy?
It doesn't. Most of the time it means stress and complications. Sadly.

Why do we celebrate then? We don't. We participate.

It'd be different if I had it my way. The time will come though.

Christmas is all about giving thanks to the birth of Jesus Christ, praying and bonding with your family, relatives and friends.

I'm not a Christian, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the Christmas celebrations. I like to see how people celebrate it according to their traditions.

I despise it. I don't like the holiday so I try not to celebrate it but it is hard because my family and many friends like it.

Christmas for me, can be summed up in one word:  Salvation.

Christmas is a festival of light in the darkest time of the year, to bring hope for new life in the coming  year. The Birth of the Christ Child serves to give focus to the celebration, Jesus brings us hope for salvation and everlasting life in the light of His Holyness.

For me Christmas is a time to enjoy the company of those you care about and to be especially generous with one another. For those of us who are Christians, this is in light of God's generosity and fellowship with us.

I think you guys should read this, http://www.sovereigngrace.net/should.htm

I have just recently discovered this, as I have been really studying the orgin of Christmas, asking myself why I do what I do, instead of just doing things because I thought that was what Christians do- which is just blind faith. It has been a real challenge but also a real blessing to finally understand my own faith!  Let me know what you think?

Please read it with an open mind, it is controversial but I, myself is a Christian and after reading it, I feel like God has just switch on a light switch and the truth has been revealed to me!

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.   (Romans 12:1-2)

    Shalom
