I don't watch
The Hills. It depresses me to see so many young adults living such unfulfilled lives. It frustrates me to watch their phony scripted conversations and watch them stare blankly at each other. I often want to scream at the TV when I see these poor kids engage in shallow, loveless relationships. Men cheat on women and spitefully use them and the girls take it like its candy on Halloween. I often wonder to myself "Have they no dignity at all?!" But alas, it is obvious they do not.
On this particular day I was just bored and desperate enough to stay on MTV for more than .3 seconds. I watched one of the girls, the married one -- whose name I don't know -- set up a romantic meal for her husband. As they sat down to eat, I noticed she was wearing nothing more than a lace nightgown and a brightly colored bra. I grimaced, embarrassed for her. I mean sure, she's married and in her own home, but the fact that she was being videotaped for a publicly televised show should have told her that she should wear something a little bit less revealing.
Until this point the issue wasn’t exactly blogworthy; this kind of thing happens on MTV every second of every day. It wasn’t until the couple sat down to say grace that I raised an eyebrow.
They believe in God? Mrs. Scantily Clad and Mr. Chauvinistic Pig are going to give Glory to God? Well, go ahead, I thought. Maybe there is hope for you yet. The prayer started off pretty typically. She thanked God for the food and her husband and their home but then she dropped the bomb that sort of angered me:
“And thank you, God, for my outfit."
What outfit? You’re wearing underclothes on national television! I highly doubt that it was God Almighty who chose that outfit for you this morning; I highly doubt He was involved in providing that for you, and more than anything I seriously do not think that God would approve.
1 Timothy 2:9. Ladies, you probably read this one before; it says “Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control….” i.e. Put some clothes on when you’re in public for crying out loud, and have some respect for yourself.
I was just a little bit offended by the idea that she was wearing these clothes and thanking God for them, but I think it’s necessary to point out that she was obviously not thinking about God when she prayed that prayer. She was only trying to draw attention to herself by mentioning her clothes (or lack thereof). It annoys me the way people will become somewhat religious whenever it is convenient for them and I guess that was the point of this. Also, by the way, if you’re ever going to be on TV you might want throw some clothes on. Okay?
Do you think this instance of prayer on television gives the public the wrong impression of prayer and Christianity?

While I kind of agree that this was a silly representation of Christian prayer, I do have to point out that perhaps you're being a bit too judgmental. Even though their "lives" are played out on TV (probably scripted), we don't know what their motivations are for what they do or how they live. Maybe it was an expensive "outfit" so that was her way of thanking God for their financial situation.
Anyway, these people aren't generally taken seriously, so I doubt they've left a stain on Christianity. And who are we to judge how/what they personally, individually believe?

Is a frog's ass air tight?
I have never seen that show, but do you really think that people are watching that show to get their daily dose of religious what-have-you? If they are then maybe that says something about *those* people as well.
Ugh, this seriously makes me think of Heidi Montag. Is she on that show? Is that who you're talking about? Because Heidi and Spencer are married and became "Christians." It's kind of appalling how they portray Christianity on TV. I mean, it helps that everyone in the world thinks they're douches so no one takes them seriously, but I don't know why they couldn't go along having the world hating them without throwing in their Christianity. Spencer parades around everywhere, talking about how much better he is than people. Heidi has done Playboy shoots and any picture you see of her shows her in almost no clothes. And yet, whenever they're interviewed, they talk about God and other people's sins and how they should repent. I wish there were worthier people with this much celebrity status that would talk about repentance than these two, because they are in no position to be talking about things like this. They do anything for money, are always judging people, and Heidi is really overtly sexual. I'm not gonna sit here and judge, I can't really say how much they truly value their relationship with God. Perhaps they're just jaded. But I can't help but think about the time she did her Playboy shoot and when asked if this conflicted with her Christianity, she said, "I'm more of a modern Mother Theresa.
I would take things with moderation. I think God created the body. I
think we're born naked. We die naked. I don't think it's something to
be ashamed of. I think the body is a beautiful piece of artwork that
God created. I have nothing to be ashamed of."
I guess she ignored the fact that she's a married woman and shouldn't be baring her body, to be lusted over by men all over. Or how about the fact that she posed naked for the world for money? And most importantly, that Playboy is a staple of sexual immorality, which God clearly tells us is a sin.
Also, I heard that they were on that show "I'm a Celebrity Get Me OUt of Here" and when Spencer was sharing the power of prayer with a guy there, he told him to just believe, like the time he prayed that he would get to hang out with Miley Cyrus and he did. =l These guys are convenient Christians and it makes me so awkward when they go around acting like they're the saints of Hollywood. Yeah, no one takes them too seriously, but how many famous Christians are on TV as much as these guys are? Not many. And when prayer and stuff are misrepresented by such public figures, people might start thinking things about Christianity. Like I said, I don't know what their beliefs are, but I would just recommend that they keep reading the Bible and just find out these things for themselves.
Heidi and Spencer and the most laughed at couple in the United States. I wouldn't take anything they do too seriously, and I don't think anyone else does either.
Heidi and Spencer are vapid little freaks. But I actually like The Hills now that Kristen is on it.
I'm not sure what their hearts are like but there are four things I do know.
1. Everyone is somewhere and everyone falls short of the glory of Creator God.
2. Christ died for us while we were sinners.
3. A tree is known by its fruit.
4. There will be judgment brought at the right time and it won't be by me.
As it stands, I think we all do a good job of proving to the world that Christians fall short of our Father's ideal and two more people on television who miss the mark aren't going to add a lot to our sea of sins.
wow, i hope the air isn't too thin for you up there on your pedestal. while i'm sure that Christianity doesn't mix well with skanky clothing, it also doesn't mix well with self-righteousness.
I'm more concerned with your judgement of this couple than their prayer that you don't approve of.
And really...that says a lot. I can't STAND Speidi.
i don't care what the heck she wears. i'm not interested in this kind of television show. i don't agree with you that god "disapproves" of her outfit or that you have the right to judge their prayer. (not saying everyone who prays gets it right, but hello, publican/pharisee much?) and i suspect you, um, missed the point of her thankfulness for her outfit. i'm just gonna guess here that she intended to express her thanks for what her little outfit was going to do for her. aaaaaafter the camera guy went home.
so, long story short: this is a stupid post, and i don't care about any of it. they want to pray? for gods sake, let them pray. don't like her outfit? turn the tv off. want to do something more worthwhile with your time? read a book.Matthew 7
1Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
3And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5Thou
hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt
thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
@TrumvilleOrbison@xanga - "
i suspect you, um, missed the point of her thankfulness for her outfit."That statement alone proves that you are arguing about something you have no idea about. I understand that you don't watch the show, neither do I on a regular basis but if you want to argue that she was thankful for her outfit and i'm wrongfully judging her prayer you should at least have heard the 'prayer' which was in all honesty a complete mockery of Christianity and prayer. IDK, look it up on youtube if u want to and see for yourself. There is nothing thankful, sincere or genuine about it & I think anyone who actually saw it would agree it was done as a joke so I don't understand why you're trying to argue that she was thankful. I wrote this blog because as a Christian I was offended by her mockery of my faith & I don't think I wrongfully judged her at all. If I'm expected to watch someone make a complete joke out of my faith and my beliefs and my God and just sit and smile and say "Oh well then, I don't want to judge her so that's just fine with me!" I think that's ridiculous. & if you (like so many others) are going to use this whole "Oh you're judging!" argument against me then why would you end your comment with such judgmental comments towards me? my post is stupid & I should read a book, not that you know me, but isn't that judgmental?!?
@too_pretty_to_die@xanga - @hubbaduh@xanga - @Pensamientos - I'm just going to reiterate this to you all because you all said the same thing to me about my post:
I wrote this blog because as a Christian I was offended by this girl's mockery of my faith & I don't think I wrongfully judged her at all. If I'm expected to watch someone make a complete joke out of my faith and my beliefs and my God and just sit and smile and say "Oh well then, I don't want to judge her so that's just fine with me!" I think that's ridiculous. When God said "Thou Shalt Not Judge" I hardly think He meant that we should blindly accept everything we see in the world as perfectly acceptable, I think I have every right to speak out against something I feel is a disrespectful misrepresentation of my faith.
@BeautifulB_227@xanga - honestly, i think you just hate the show because the show sucks (and it does), and now you're just trying to come up with some faith-based reason because it makes for a cool blog. who are you to decide that it was her goal to make a mockery of your faith? who are you to decide whether her faith is genuine? honestly... she thanks God for her outfit and THAT'S what has you so upset? really, i'm flat out asking this....... how do you that it was her intent to mock Christianity?
now... if you want to judge her based on whether her actions and words are something you deem appropriate for a Christian, go ahead. but don't pretend to know her intent or whether she has genuinely accepted Jesus Christ as her savior. from my perspective, your words misrepresent Christianity far more than hers. you just come across as hateful or jealous.
@BeautifulB_227@xanga -
ditto what too_pretty_to_die said.
okay. it doesn't sound like you read my entire comment, which is fine by me, but in case you want clarification, here it is. i'm not trying to tell anyone she didn't say what you said she said. how should i know? i didn't see it. i'm also not trying to convince you her prayer wasn't shallow. i DO think you misinterpreted the reason she "gave thanks" for her outfit, and i DON'T mean to say her intention was deep or spiritual, i DO mean that it looks pretty obvious to me that she was thankful for her great outfit for the night of great sex she had planned for later. okay? okay.
i do think you're judging, and i don't think it's really any of your business, any more than it's my business. christianity doesn't belong to you. neither does jesus. and furthermore, i think this is a stupid thing to get so angry about. there are actual issues in the world that matter much more than whether or not you think some celebrity's prayer is sincere. nonissue!and how were my previous closing comments judging? you say you don't like the show, you say you don't watch it. so pardon me, but if you happened to turn it on and you saw something that offended you, wouldn't it make sense to either turn it off or change the channel? if this were a show that already appealed to you, i could understand your outrage a bit better, i think, but because you already knew what a crappy show it was, i don't get it. did you really expect anything better? and the entire WORLD would be much better off if we spent more time reading than vegetating in front of the television, being spoon-fed ridiculous "reality" shows and brainwashed by commercials. so i disagree with you that "read a book." is a judgmental statement. it's not even specific to you!
Perhaps the 'outfit' to which she was referring was her body sans clothing (I assume, without seeing the show, that she was pretty)? In any event, while TV almost never brings out anything good concerning the faith, it is better than a show like 7th Heaven which tried to pretend the lead was a minister.
I think it's a shame that she is putting herself out there like that though...with the whole outfit thing. Christian or not, I wish some of the women on TV would learn to cover up. :/ It teaches the younger girls that that's what they should look like when they're older.
And I can see where the writer is coming from this. I don't think they meant to be judgmental, although it did sort of come out like that. I think it's safe to say that it's reasonable for something like this to bother someone when you see someone professing to be a Christian, yet their actions show no proof whatsoever. But aren't we all a little guilty of this once in a while? Perhaps we aren't scantily clad and thanking God for the lack of our outfit, but think back to one time you might have done something "unchristian." I know I'm guilty.
It looks like smack-down on 227 day.....
That's not a good thing. She's a sweet girl who holds the word HOLY high among the things that Christians should be...
Be ye holy for I am holy.
I believe that 227's comments about the show could be paraphrased like this:
Running around half-naked sort of messes there reputation up if they are sincere, and if they're not, then they're not.. It's not judgemental, it's fruit-inspection.
i didnt know that they are christian... i watched one episode.. probably super long ago episode... they were laughing or at least spencer at heidi's ex bf for being a christian....
i feel your anger.. but i guess there isnt anything we can do but to pray you know.. =)I dont think you really get the mtv concepts. They arent trying to reach anyone or spread any religious message. They create and influence a bunch of kids with strangely loose morals and film it. Its lke train wreck tv.
Seriously though?
When she was praying, when she said thanks for her outfit she probably meant the fact that she had clothes on her back and was able to afford them.
It annoys me the way people will become somewhat religious whenever it is convenient for them and I guess that was the point of this.
And I don't see how praying to God before dinner was at all "convenient" for them.
Pretty much, you made a big deal out of nothing.
This wasn't at all needed.
