  • Who Would You Say Is God?

    Imagine yourself talking to your best friend. Now imagine him being a nonbeliever. You're in the middle of a conversation talking about each other's lives and, at, the end of a sentence, you say, "Isn't God great?" without giving it a second thought. Once you say that, there is a long pause.

    Your friend looks a little offended at first; then he thinks for a bit. He finally speaks up, and says. "You know, I have heard alot about this God stuff, and I was thinking of looking into it, but never got to it." Then he asks the question you wish you would never have to answer in a situation like this. "Who is God?"

    This is the where you come in; what would you say? Now this is one of the best situations you could get in. Say he just asked, "Who is God?" or he wasn't your best friend, just a friend. Or say he was a complete stranger--would you answer the question, or ignore him and try and bring it up some other time, or lie and say you don't know who he is?

    This is a very important thing to think about for all Christians.

    2 Samuel 22:3-50 (New International Version)

     3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
           my shield and the horn of my salvation.
           He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior—
           from violent men you save me.

     4 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
           and I am saved from my enemies.

     5 "The waves of death swirled about me;
           the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.

     6 The cords of the grave  coiled around me;
           the snares of death confronted me.

     7 In my distress I called to the LORD;
           I called out to my God.
           From his temple he heard my voice;
           my cry came to his ears.

     8 "The earth trembled and quaked,
           the foundations of the heavens shook;
           they trembled because he was angry.

     9 Smoke rose from his nostrils;
           consuming fire came from his mouth,
           burning coals blazed out of it.

     10 He parted the heavens and came down;
           dark clouds were under his feet.

     11 He mounted the cherubim and flew;
           he soared  on the wings of the wind.

     12 He made darkness his canopy around him—
           the dark  rain clouds of the sky.

     13 Out of the brightness of his presence
           bolts of lightning blazed forth.

     14 The LORD thundered from heaven;
           the voice of the Most High resounded.

     15 He shot arrows and scattered the enemies ,
           bolts of lightning and routed them.

     16 The valleys of the sea were exposed
           and the foundations of the earth laid bare
           at the rebuke of the LORD,
           at the blast of breath from his nostrils.

     17 "He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
           he drew me out of deep waters.

     18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
           from my foes, who were too strong for me.

     19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
           but the LORD was my support.

     20 He brought me out into a spacious place;
           he rescued me because he delighted in me.

     21 "The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
           according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.

     22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD;
           I have not done evil by turning from my God.

     23 All his laws are before me;
           I have not turned away from his decrees.

     24 I have been blameless before him
           and have kept myself from sin.

     25 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
           according to my cleanness  in his sight.

     26 "To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
           to the blameless you show yourself blameless,

     27 to the pure you show yourself pure,
           but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.

     28 You save the humble,
           but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.

     29 You are my lamp, O LORD;
           the LORD turns my darkness into light.

     30 With your help I can advance against a troop ;
           with my God I can scale a wall.

     31 "As for God, his way is perfect;
           the word of the LORD is flawless.
           He is a shield
           for all who take refuge in him.

     32 For who is God besides the LORD ?
           And who is the Rock except our God?

     33 It is God who arms me with strength
           and makes my way perfect.

     34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
           he enables me to stand on the heights.

     35 He trains my hands for battle;
           my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

     36 You give me your shield of victory;
           you stoop down to make me great.

     37 You broaden the path beneath me,
           so that my ankles do not turn.

     38 "I pursued my enemies and crushed them;
           I did not turn back till they were destroyed.

     39 I crushed them completely, and they could not rise;
           they fell beneath my feet.

     40 You armed me with strength for battle;
           you made my adversaries bow at my feet.

     41 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,
           and I destroyed my foes.

     42 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—
           to the LORD, but he did not answer.

     43 I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth;
           I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets.

     44 "You have delivered me from the attacks of my people;
           you have preserved me as the head of nations.
           People I did not know are subject to me,

     45 and foreigners come cringing to me;
           as soon as they hear me, they obey me.

     46 They all lose heart;
           they come trembling from their strongholds.

     47 "The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock!
           Exalted be God, the Rock, my Savior!

     48 He is the God who avenges me,
           who puts the nations under me,

     49 who sets me free from my enemies.
           You exalted me above my foes;
           from violent men you rescued me.

     50 Therefore I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations;
           I will sing praises to your name.

    If you were in this situation, how would you respond? Who do you say is God?

    I would say, He is the only being existent in the Universe the reason for who's existence is within Himself. Every other existing entity finds a reason for their existence outside of themselves. In that sense He alone is great and He alone is perfect. He is uncaused He just exists.

    I am still figuring this out myself - I very recently came to realize that God really wants to know me and have a relationship with me. I only very recently accepted that call to know Him. I very recently have been moved by Him and shown His grace, love, and peace. However, I can definitely say God is merciful and full of love and grace. He is not a wimp, though. God is amazing. He's done amazing things in my life and in the lives of those I have met/am friends with. He is my saviour - the only reason for which I need to live. He gives me hope and life. He is becoming my best friend. I want Him to be my lover. I want to be obsessed!

    I would say that God is whoever freed the Israelites from bondage in Egypt and whoever raised Jesus of Israel from the dead.  I'm much more confident in the biblical story than in philosophical phrases like "God is the unmoved mover" or "That of which higher cannot be conceived."

  • Pickwick12@xanga

    I would say He's my friend and the one who changed my life, the reason I'm alive today. I have had a chance to tell people this. I believe that in most cases, starting from the personal is the best way to go. I know I'd be less likely to respond to philosophy or biblical concepts and more likely to respond to personal experiences.

    The bottom line, though, is that this one area in which we desperately need the Holy Spirit's leading. He can help us know what to say that will be right for the person we're speaking to.

    Nice post.

    God is my savior, my father, the one who has kept me alive and has a purpose for my life.

    That's a dumb conversation. Who says "I've heard a lot about this God stuff"? A better conversation would be something like, "I believe in a God, just not the Christian one."

  • too_pretty_to_die@xanga

    @crazy2love@xanga - agreed.  i've always marveled at how Christians seem to use a non-believer stereotype in all of these examples.  i think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who knows absolutely nothing about Christianity, especially in the US.  or someone who hasn't given it thought.

  • Pcgecko85@xanga

    i would ask "who created god?" to my christian friend.

  • Faerie_In_Combat_Boots@xanga

    I would've said that "God" isn't a separate entity, but everything around us. Our breath, our food, every step we take is..."God."
    Within us is as piece of that "God". that divinity, although humans, being incredibly worldly, are blind to it.

    Btw, I'm not Christian in any way, shape, or form. [:

    God is Spirit. The one through whom all things exist and have their being. God is father, God is friend, God is Comforter, God is Light, but most of all, God is Love.

    @Faerie_In_Combat_Boots@xanga - Hey, I'm just curious...you're a pantheist then? God is all and all is God?

    So, did God bring itself into existence?? Because the universe definitely had a beginning. Or did something else create God?

    just wondering about your thoughts on this:)

  • gmx0@xanga
    God is God, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit. He is Creator, Father, Friend. He is Comforter, Redeemer, Saviour. He is Judge, High Priest, King of Kings. He is Alpha and Omega, Prince of Peace. He is Holy, Holy, Holy. He is Triune and One at the same time. He is this and infinitely more.

    @Pashe@xanga - Let me add my agreement yours :)

  • celticanglican

    @too_pretty_to_die@xanga -  "i think you'd be hard-pressed to find
    someone who knows absolutely nothing about Christianity, especially in
    the US.  or someone who hasn't given it thought."
         I agree about the former, but there are probably plenty of the latter around. I know of several people who just don't regard God one way or another.

    God is the food you eat; that gives you your being and good health. I know you may not believe this but it's true.

    Truth be told, I would never mention God to a non believer, because I'm very closed about my faith.
    Comes part because of my upbringing where people generally don't WANT to hear about a God.
    But if he asks, and I would see he's trying, want to know God, I could answer him many things, including the following:

    God is technically a being that exists inside, and outside of the world of matter as we know it.
    The bible gives the closest proximity of who God is. In Genesis the bible says that God is the creator, or maker of all mankind, of the world, the galaxy, time, and everything we can see, touch, feel, smell taste, hear, etc...
    God also made another world, which the bible talks about, which is the supernatural world.
    But leave that aside, God made man, so that He could have fellowship or friendship with man.
    He longs for nothing more than to make man understand his own position, and His (Gods) position in this world.

    I find it hard to explain God to a non believer, because he often goes prejudged, thinking 'there is no god'. And if he thinks like that I generally don't even want to try explaining.
    If he is genuine, I'd tell him that to fully understand God would take a lifetime and more to understand the character of God!
    That there are basic things about God that you just can't explain in a 2 minute, or 2 hour, or 2 days, or even 2 weeks timeframe.
