“Without writing a novel at this point, I'll just say that I'm starting to think that I might actually be a songwriter, musician or artist of some kind... So, maybe I should do something about it?” With these words, and a few more
, Jennifer Knapp has announced her return to the music scene.
Knapp took Christian music by storm in 1998 with her hit single, “Undo Me”, off the album Kansas, which went Gold. She signed to Gotee Records, where she released two more albums, Lay it Down in 2000 and The Way I Am in 2001. A few years and several successful tours later, Knapp decided to take a break from music, citing the pressure of writing fresh material and promoting albums as reasons for the break.
She never came back, leaving fans to speculate as to why she would so abruptly end her career and to wonder if she would ever come back. To fulfill her record contract, Gotee Records released two compilation albums, Jennifer Knapp: The Collection in 2003 and Jennifer Knapp: Live in 2006. It seemed, at least for a time, that these were the final chapter in her story.
Not so. “
We've been flooded with emails and phone calls simply by putting up a humble little homepage,” muses Knapp in a letter to her fans
currently posted on her website. “So much for my little holiday. It's looking very much like it may be over.” In the short period of time since Patrol Magazine announced
in August that her management confirmed she was writing music again, this letter has appeared on her site, as well as a few tour dates and a new song on her Myspace profile. The song, “Letting Go”, is a much more mature Jennifer Knapp, and if this is just a glimpse at what her future project will be like, it's definitely going to be an album to look into.
