Do You Say You Love Jesus?
Do you say you love Jesus, but don't read the Bible? Then, you're lying not only to others but to yourself.
Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. And the word that you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent me. "- John 14:23-24
How can you keep the Word of Jesus, if you don't know what that Word says? How can you know what His Words says, if you never read it? The Bible is the primary revelation of God, Who He is, how He works. You cannot love a God that you don't know. If you don't first get to know Him through His word, neither can you properly recognize God working in your life. The Bible is the foundation of Christianity. If you've never read the Bible, then essentially, you've never taken the time to learn what a Christian is from God.
Sound doctrine is good, preaching is good, worship is good, but it is by the Word alone that you are fed. Jesus said, in Matthew 4:4, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God." How much more do we survive on the Word of God, we who are less that our Master and Teacher who also lives on God's Words? Do you follow a sound doctrine? Do you go to church every Sunday? Do you sing hymns and worship? Good! But if you think these things alone are enough, then look at what Proverbs says of you: "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes." (12:15)
Take time to read what is right in God's eyes!
Isaiah 34:16 says "Seek and read from the book of the Lord."
Who should seek and read from the book of the Lord? YOU should seek and read from the book of the Lord. This is not a mere suggestion. Do you say you love Jesus, but don't read the Bible? Then repent! Turn from the foolish ways of you own eyes and your own expectations. Instead, learn what God expects of you. If you claim you love Jesus, then keep His word! Before you can keep it, you must first know it. To know it, you must read it.
Brothers and Sisters, I exhort you all, read the Bible. Your souls depend on it.
Whatever binds you from reading His word, be it laziness, lack of time, lack of attention, lack of confidence, lack of interest, God can demolish all these barriers. All you need is the desire and the faith. Have faith, my siblings in Christ. Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. - James 4:8
Do you desire to know God's ways by reading the Bible? If you don't desire it or simply don't read the Bible, then why?

Okay...
But I'm going to start reading with the parts of the Bible that tell me that my "soul depends" on what Jesus did rather than what I do, that rules-based spirituality does not help us to be holy, and that my relationship with God is based on His grace rather than my works (even good and necessary works).
And if I've been congratulating myself for doing all that reading, I might look at Jesus' words in John 5:39-40 and let them unsettle me for a bit.
I grew up suffocated by Bible memory clubs and Bible classes and Bible this and Bible that. Unfortunately very few of those things really focused on practical application and understanding of God's Word, it was just all about being able to recite verses and at the most give very surface, pretexted explanations for what they meant. I probably have at least 80% of the Bible memorized, I've probably participated in lessons and studies that covered every passage in the Bible.
Its only since I dropped out of Bible college that I've had a real desire to know God's Word. The tough thing is now, every time I try to read the Bible, I feel like I've read it all a million times before, and it can be such a chore to focus on the text and cut through all the shallow jargon I've come to associate with it.
I have to say though, as I continue to seek to know God's Word, many of the things I have learned in shallow fashion in the past have become freshly illuminated to me. I was told that all the Bible memorization I did as a child was "hiding God's Word in my heart". But its really like I have Biblical words packed in my mind, and now as I truly reflect on them they are becoming God's Word hidden in my heart.
At times I'll still try to fool myself into thinking that I know enough of what the Bible says, its not like I really need to read it all that often. But have you ever watched a really great film, over and over, and each time you notice some new intricacy or walk away with a fresh view of it? I think that's how the Bible can be, if you are truly seeking God's face in reading it.
I definitely agree that in order to know the way and heart of God, we need to know what the Bible says, and the best way to do that is to read it.

I have read the Bible all the way through at least once a year since 1965. Why do I not love Jesus more?
It's about being Christ-like, not knowing the bible. That's idolatry. You're putting man's words about Christ before Christ himself. And they are Man's words, because men wrote the bible. It's a creation of man (influenced by God).
You either worship the creator, or the creation. The bible is a creation. I love Jesus. I'm SO GLAD that The Bible is available for us to know more about Him, but it's still a physical thing which has been created.
Church can be an idol. Watch out for idolatry there too!
Yep, I like reading God's word. It helps me get through the day.

Too many Christians refuse to read the Bible because it was written by men, and is therefore corrupt. They don't seem to understand that God's overall message and plan for salvation is perfect even if mere mortals can't write it down word for word.
Sometimes reading the Bible feels more like a chore than spending quality time with God, but I make time for it every day the same way I make time for homework and laundry. If something needs to be done because I make it my priority, then I will make time for it, simple as that.

I actually think that there are a LOT of Christians that don't really love God and are in fact, not Christians at all. As harsh as that sounds....it's likely true.
In fact the main reason I'm not Christian at this point is that I find it extremely difficult. I believe a true Christian that loves God would live their life for God.....doesn't mean you have to be a monk or nun....but its just so obvious that many "Christians" live only for themselves.....except from 11-2 on Sundays.
I love Jesus ! I love all things holy ! I don't read the bible on my own time, but I own my own bible and I bring it with me to church !

Both extremes sound equally ridiculous.
Isn't the point of attending Church every Sunday supposed to enlighten followers on the written Word? I thought Jesus wanted us all to go out and serve a humanitarian purpose that benefits ourselves and others. What exactly does sitting and reading historical texts accomplish? The messages of the Bible would be more clearly understood if outlined by a priest or theologian that has studied and understood them. The fact that so many people have clung to the Bible's literal Word is an unfortunate source of widespread fundamentalism and ignorance concerning the purpose of the Christian faith.
Be a good person- put down the book and do something with yourself.
"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God."
We can't have true faith without God's word. Jesus spoke the word to satan when he was tempted in the wilderness and the bible says - "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly."
Forget reading the Bible. We need to hang out together and listen to someone read it out loud, and argue over what it means. That's way more old-school.
What if we make all our lives simple and just do what the word says.

(How on earth do you get logically from there to "we shouldn't read the Bible at all"?)

Reading the Bible is good. I don't go a day without it. I desire God and that is why I do it, but I believe that He alone places that desire in me, motivates me to read His Word, and enables me to. My trust is in Him, that He is holding onto me and won't let me go.
Nice wake up call, I particulary needed it. Hey we here in america have it good now. But there may come a day when we have to read our Bible in secret. Read while you still can. Makes me think alot about the Bible ban in china ya know, and other places where it is not welcome. We need to wake up and draw closer to Him who calls us.
