  • Training and Exercise: Struggling Toward Something Good

    poppy by miss poppy

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

I don't know about you, but I work out. Most days, you can either see me sweating to death on my exercise bike or walking around my neighborhood, sometimes both. Other days, you can find me doing Tae-Bo. Now, I'm not planning to be a competitive athlete, but I know that training, however amateur it may be, ain't always fun. In fact, I'd call it pretty un-fun.

I've been struggling lately in my relationship with God, but it's not a bad struggle. It's a struggle toward something good. I'm in no danger of leaving my heavenly Father, only fighting through to know Him better. I'm training, working hard to change the shape of my spiritual body, getting rid of the flab that has held me back for years from experiencing God's fullness.

Training ain't fun. But it's worth it when I see that my body does what I want it to do. In the same way, as I get to know God more fully, the pain becomes nothing compared to the reward.

How is God leading you to train spiritually?

I think by changing the way I deal with stressful situations, the way I treat people who have hurt me in the past, and making me more aware of my temper at times. Sometimes that puts me in awkward situations where I really have to trust God to get me out of them. I don't always handle things with as much grace and compassion as I should, but I think (hope?) I'm slowly getting better.

I like it . God isn't finished with us and doesn't give up on us:
Philippians 1:6 "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."

"Training ain't fun. But it's worth it..." Isn't that the truth. Sometimes we as Christians have to stay in training to trust God. I'm finding that fear and doubt are the biggest stumbling blocks for Believers. We look around us way more than we look to Jesus. Now, as a Christian that wants to be in good physical shape for God as well, I have to remember that I can bring my body into submission and train it to honor God as well. Thanks!

    • About Me: I am a senior in college. I love to knit, watch K-dramas, and bake. The point of my life is to love God, and I write about the ups and downs of that journey. Philippians 3:8-11: 8What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. 10I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.
