  • Encouragement: Don't Forget to Lift Up Your Brothers and Sisters

Today I was thinking about how my Christian friends have influenced my life. Constantly, my close Christian friends are the ones who are there for me when I need someone. One of favorite things is when I get encouraged by them when it’s unexpected. It reminds me that I have people in my life who love God and love others. But more importantly, it reminds me of how I should behave towards them, to others, and to God.

It brings to mind a passage in Hebrews 10 that talks about how as Christians we should help each to love and do good deeds. It goes on to say that we should have fellowship and encourage each other. I started to think do I have fellowship? I can put a check by that one, but when it comes to encouragement, I find that I’m only average in this area. I’ve received encouragement through phone calls, text messages, one-on-one visits, letters, and even through Facebook. I’ve used some of the same methods, but I know I could work harder on trying to encourage my brothers and sisters in Christ. I wonder what other methods of encouragement are out there that I might not think of.

Have you ever received or given encouragement to others in a creative way and would like to share?

I have been encouraged recently by fellow believers (who are older than me) taking the time to talk with me through issues of faith and life.  They asked me questions, pursued my answers with more questions, and helped me think deeply through issues.  When I admitted my tendencies toward sin in certain areas, they listened with compassion and without judgment.

I wasn't going through any major life crisis that merited their attention.  They just cared enough about me and my relationship with God to help me process through things that were on my mind.  It was such a huge encouragement to me, and it motivated me to want to do the same for others.

I don't know if it's creative or not but I think from my own personal experience that ppl need a LOT more encouraging in churches than they are getting!  I for one, just left a church that I poured my life into with very, very little encouragment.  However, what I did get was criticism and complaining.  That's what i see running rampant in the church, not encouragement and it is a SHAME!   And yes, I DID encourage others on a regular basis but the favor was seldom returned!
