  • Is Tim Tebow a Sports Role Model?

I’ll admit that I am not a sports fan. I don’t watch them on television, I barely watched them when my brother played, and I definitely don’t play most of them (mainly because I’m terrible at them). Occasionally there is something that will happen in the sports world that gets my attention.

When Tim Tebow answered the question “Are you a virgin?” during a conference, it seems there has been a very mixed reaction to the question. Some thought the question was inappropriate. Others hailed Mr. Tebow for his grace in handling the question. More than anything is the fact that he answered and that his answer was yes. Considering he is an extremely popular college football athlete, Tebow’s answer carries some importance.

Tim Tebow is a Christian and has used his sports platform to promote his beliefs on occasion. On top of that, he is considered to be a role model.  By practicing what he preaches, he is being a true role model. I think we should applaud him for being able to stand for what he believes in. While I’m sure now, there will be more people to watch him hoping he will mess up. I hope that he will stand true to what he believes and continue to be a good role model in the sports world.

What do you think about Tim Tebow’s “confession” and him being a role model?

If you've ever used google trends, you can see what the most commonly googled phrases are for a specific day.  When Tebow had "John 3:16" painted on his face for the BCS championship game, the google searches for "John 3:16" were extremely high that day.  I didn't think something like that would have much impact, but I was surprised at how many people looked it up.

I've noticed that whenever we see anyone as a "role model," they end up disappointing us in some way. That's what Jesus is for.

I'm not a sports fan either, but I recently read an article about this guy which called him a "super human" because of his ability to "deny sex." Clearly, the article was written to mock him and had a very sarcastic tone to it. It made me sad that people actually think he's worthy of superhero status simply because he wants to wait until marriage. Even worse, I read some comments on that article from people who actually believe that anyone who wants to save themselves for marriage is only saying that as a cover-up for the fact that they are unattractive and incapabale of "getting any."

Tim is certainly off to a great start. I just hope he doesn't end up traveling down the same beaten path that Miss California, Mel Gibson, and other "media Christians" have in recent news. It's unfortunate but whenever I hear about a new outspoken Christian celebrity, I never get my hopes up, because I'm so used to hearing about Christian celebrities getting tangled in sex scandals and whatnot.

I think it just makes him a Christian Role-model.

I'm a Florida Gator, so of course my answer is biased. Yes, I think Tim Tebow is a Christian role-model, because he lived what he preached long before he started preaching. His lifestyle made people ask about his beliefs, not the other way around. UF is the number #2 party school in the nation, according to the Princeton Review, and yet people at UF respect Tebow, respect his life and his talent, and are quick to confirm that he really does live the life he says he does, even though it doesn't match what they do with their own life. My brother was in a class with Tebow and said, if you didn't know who he was, you wouldn't know it from him, because he was quick to praise others and not himself, was humble and never spoke ill of others, but always owned up to his own faults. ~ L

We lived on the same street for a few years when he was little.  The Tebows had the first "home church" I'd ever heard of.  They were great neighbors and true believers.  Though I'm an FSU Seminole, I'm glad God has chosen Tim to glorify Himself through in this way.  Then again, you can't expect a guy to get everything right, so I'll pardon him for choosing the wrong school.  And, yes, I've been praying for him for the Fathers' name sake.  But eventually the sports press will find some crack in his armor and shout it to the world.  And they won't let go of it nearly so quickly as they have the swimming gold medalist's drug use.  That's their job description.

I have no idea. He looks stronger than me, so I personally wouldn't get into to a fight with him over it.

Nobody seems to remember the unsportmanlike conduct penalty he got during last year's national championship game against Oklahoma. He's not perfect, and I hate how the sports media glorifies him like a demigod just because he's a white, christian athelete.

I commend the guy for his stand. But be careful, he hold these people up to high standards and they are human they make mistakes. Satan will do and use what ever means he can to make us stumble. You don't have to look very far for proof. Look at our own lives.
