  • Church Sign Condemns Islam

A church in Florida has posted a makeshift sign in its lawn that reads, "ISLAM IS OF THE DEVIL."  CNN.com reports the sign will be allowed to stay according to Florida laws.  It just has to be made smaller and moved closer to the ground.

What do you think about the content of the sign? What about the decision to put up the sign? Would you support your church doing the same or similar thing on various hot topics?

Islam was founded by the man Mohammed who proclaimed, "Allah akbar!!" with great reverence and sincerity.  Muslims are taught to fear God.  So the sign is factually incorrect for Satan has no regard or reverence for God.  Additionally a lot of very good people practice Islam and benefit greatly from it.    Satan is totally distructive.  So again, we see that the sign is factually incorrect.

And then people wonder why places like this one (on the picture) get burned to the ground or mutilated beyond recognition one of those nights... Sigh.

  • galadrielspitcher@xanga

no, i wouldn't. that sign isn't tactful at all. do they really expect to make an impact with it? i think it would just drive people away, rather than draw them in.

  • ThinkingofGod@xanga

Well, I truly believe that they're not a good representation of God's people. We're taught to love and care for those lost and broken, not condemn and persecute. This just outraging them and pushing them away. You don't force guilt on them, you recognize their problems and love for them and care for them to show them the truth. I think this is kind of ridiculous.

Frankly, it makes neither more nor less sense than "atheism is of the devil," which is basically a mainstream position in Christian theology. No matter what you believe, you are forced to believe that the majority of the world's population is deeply wrong.

  • CelestialTeapot@xanga

I don't know which is worse-- if there are Muslims in their community or if there isn't.

  • Charity_the_So_Called_Artist@xanga

Truth hurts doesn't it? Though I doubt the sign will bring anyone to Christ. ;P

  • Lordv16@xanga

I'm sure jesus would love that sign. Way to go florida christians, you'll be first in line to get into heaven /sarcasm

@fallingraindrop@xanga - while agree that the sign is wrong and should not be displayed like that i disagree with you about the nature of Satan. Yes Satan is destructive, but that does not mean that he is an out of controll destructive force. He is conniving and a liar. if he can keep people from the truth he does that, especially if it helps their lives, because he is in a battle with God. if he can deny the truth about who God really is then he does that he has a long term goal, when they die and go to hell Islam does not help them so much. but on earth Islam is incredibly helpful to them. so you see Satan is not a purely destructive force, he is in rebellion against God, and he has tricked the world into going to hell with him. but if he was purely destructive about it he would never solicit our support, he would be alone. by starting new religions that are helpful to the world, but do not lead to the truth that saves them, is fulfilling Satan's plan to hide the world in darkness, but his plan is better served by the guise of good than evil.

I would not suggest it and i think it is bringing unnecessary attack upon that congregation adn Christians in general, however, because Islam teaches another way other than through Christ alone, it is technically a true statement.

Don't the Protestants and Catholics say that about each other, too?

This kind of reminds me of Waterboy, where the mom was like, "Foo'sball is of the Devil!"

But anyway, on topic, I would not support this at all. In fact, I would avoid a church that plants these kinds of signs on their lawn. Maybe the church (as in the entire body) needs to make up her mind: do we wanna draw people in or keep people out? Because it's easy to keep people out and keep Heaven for ourselves. Or do we wanna be this so-called "City Upon A Hill" that is seated for weary travelers who pass through the dark? And for those who pass through this city: would they want to stay in this city?

Remember, we were all once weary travelers till we found a home in Christ. Having a sign like this would make our visitors feel unwelcome.

It's a faith statement of freedom.  The USA is the land of freedom.  A Christian church should respect that freedom and do what is right and to do what God calls for in a Christian church."practice what you preach."  Is it a peaceful resolution and is it the church role to make fun of others.  We say no..but, we would do something to make a point to their religion and share the Gospel.

To invite them into a christian church service.  A peaceful and respectful way of making a point of free will and reaching out to others.

Church is for worshiping and fellowship.  Not making political statements, or hurting others.  Extend an invitation...and help Invite them into worship and fellowship.  Maybe, it would make a difference and may even convert a few to Christianity.  But, respect their freedom in America and God's free will.  A lesson learned...in the  Holy Bible.

well i understand why it's legal, but that doesn't mean i condone its existence.

  • Ex_Adyto_Cordis@xanga
Freedom of speech, although it's pretty childish. Pointing fingers, insults, etc. Ever heard of "agree to disagree"?
  • crystal_air@xanga

Just another example of the Body of Christ 'condeming' where we should be 'receiving' and 'loving.'

  • squanto_07@xanga

I dont agree with it but why does it have to be made smaller? i dont get how its legal for them to make the sign smaller

  • BohemianLamb@xanga

It should remain legal, freedom of expression and all that. But I still think it's extremely wrong. I would never attend a church that would do such a thing.

If you believe that truth is only found in the Bible, then that’s the end of it. But if you believe that a loving God can inspire men to write things that might lead them to a personal relationship with God, which might in time lead them to Christ, then we might exclaim, “Oh, God IS involved in the details of our lives!”

If you take just the Qur’an (Koran), and not all the “sayings” that have been added by their clerics through the years, there are many parts in it that the Holy Spirit testifies to be true. It is no wonder there are over a billion followers of Islam today. Readers feel the truth of certain portions and join, assuming all the added parts are also true, and not realizing that the clerics have totally twisted the actual meaning in many places.

While truth and salvation are two different things, it is evident that God will give to a people all the truth they will receive, hoping that they will grow from truth to truth and reach the salvation that only comes through Christ.

  • ixcrisxi@xanga

I think this is wrong. I mean, the church definitely has a right to their own beliefs, but is it really necessary to broadcast it in such a hateful way?

@BohemianLamb@xanga - I agree. I would have some serious reconsiderations if my church posted something like this.
  • mikenpeg@xanga

It may be freedom of speech, but it is certainly not going to bring ANYONE to Christ. So, that church is defeating its own purpose.

  • KatrinaReads@xanga

I support the church and its members' freedoms of free speech, same as I would support an Islamic place of worship having a sign outside it claiming the same thing about Christianity. The place I draw the line is when either of the two leave the words and turn things physical.

  • HLPU@xanga

While true, what is the purpose of the sign?  Signs are to have a purpose.  This type of confrontation sign is ineffective.  My guess is that it is arrogance that led to the sign.  I would see no purpose in it, so I would not suggest it at my church.   I respect the rights of others to have this sign though; it is freedom of speech.

  • GaugeCheck

@squanto_07@xanga - The sign probably doesn't correspond with laws concerning safety or some such. It's probably nothing to do with the message but the actual dimensions of the sign. Similar to how, here in Iowa, the fence around an above ground pool at a daycare must be twice the height of the pool (which in my family's case means it has to be ten feet tall, which is a bit ridiculous) with, at most, one-inch gaps between the posts.

    @Charity_the_So_Called_Artist@xanga - "truth hurts, doesn't it?"
I don't understand if you're replying to someone's statement about the body's misrepresentation of the faith or the fact that Islam is "of the devil." I assume and hope that you meant the former, because the latter would put you in the group of Christians that many people seem to dislike. Sorry if I've misinterpreted you.
