  • Is America Uniquely Blessed by God?

On a recent Revelife post entitled Do You Sing Patriotic Songs in Church?LoBornlite@xanga commented:

America is the only nation in history that declared, in writing, that it is self-evident that certain unalienable rights are given to us by the Creator:  the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

And for that, America is unique, and uniquely blessed by God.  America IS exceptional.  America is the greatest nation in human history.

Do you agree? Do you think that America is uniquely blessed because our founding documents acknowledge that our rights and freedoms are granted to us by God?

No, I don't think that America is uniquely blessed by God. However, I am somewhat amazed that the documents have stayed the same given the huge increase in atheists and/or anti-religious individuals since our country's founding.

  • sierrraa@xanga

@TalithaKum88@xanga - You would be surprised at how many people were atheists/anti-/non-religious around the time the country was founded. Most of the "founding fathers" fell into this group. Atheism is not a 21st century invention.

  • JJPrint3rd@xanga

No, I don't think this at all.
Though that could be because I am very proudly Canadian, married to an American who is becoming a Canadian. This could also be because I have had nothing but terrible experiences every time I have visited south of the border, and thus prefer to remain safe and happy in my own country.
I think if anything the USA is suffering now because they have turned away from God...   hey wasn't a nation punished for something similar in the Bible somewhere...?

  • sierrraa@xanga

Also, to answer the question: No, I don't. I don't believe God is too concerned about man-made political boundaries. Given that America is the bully of the world's playground, I doubt He's all that pleased with us, anyway.

    No.

God has stopped working in America. And you can see it.

To me, He is now blessing China & South Korea.

  • kipahni@xanga

We are incredibly fourtunate but does that make us lucky or blessed by God I don't know. By saying America is blessed by God are you then saying that other countries are lessed blessed?

I think we are and I think it has to do with our relationship with Israel for it is said that those nations will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed. We are one of the only nations in this world that supports Israel to a great extent and look at what our country can do.

  • Theophilus166@xanga

I think it's sometimes tough to determine whether what we have is a blessing from God, especially if what we have is a conglomerate of things acquired by both legitimate, Godly means, as well as sinful means.  Some argue that our country was founded on biblical principles, yet at the same time we were lying, manipulating, and murdering native Americans.  We claimed that certain unalienable rights were given to us by the Creator, yet in practice we didn't apply those rights to the natives or Africans that we brought over to be our slaves.  It doesn't matter what the documents say if we don't practice those values.  We claimed a divinely appointed manifest destiny, yet we surely didn't use Godly means to take the land.

The saying that America is the "greatest nation in world history" is simply an opinion.  By what measure?  Economics? Education? Peacemaking? Service? Love?  Space exploration? Innovation? Athletics? Military?  Population? "Greatest" can be judged in so many different measures.

  • HeartOfPandora@xanga

Fuck no, this country sucks.  The Crazy Christian to Sane Christian ration is about 1000:1.

@TalithaKum88@xanga -  one of the biggest reason the founding generation of the US left Britain's control was because they wanted freedom of religion (and all of that hey you can't tax us! crap).  That doesn't mean the majority of them wanted freedom to be a different denomination of Christian, it means that most people wanted the freedom to not be Xtian AT ALL.  Like Sierra said, atheism is not new.

    And don't lump atheism with anti-theism.  There's a difference.

  • Pashe@xanga

I would have to say no too and I love this nation. It's like what Theophilus166 said. This country is like every other great power of their time, greedy, land obsessed and capable of great good. We are and have been capable of great evil.

In my opinoin, America was Blessed (though not uniquely) by God.

Now, it seems, we've completely turned out back on God.  There is no blessing in that.

  • Mangonese@xanga

    No.

Quite honestly, the "information" backing that claim seems like plain...well, dumbassery.

  • Mangonese@xanga

@sierrraa@xanga - Indeed. Most were Deists, according to many history classes I've taken and the research I've done on the matter.

  • Repository@xanga

    No! And you're scary!

I'm pretty sure Israel declares a whole lot of times that it is God's; Britain claimed God's sovereignty throughout its colonial age, and so on, and so forth: America is not special. Furthermore, America has done just as little for God (and maybe even more against) in the modern age as any of these other countries. Israel, for example, is still fighting. You may claim they're illegitimate because they don't believe in Jesus, but the original point stands: America is not special, at least not because they claim they're "One nation, Under God."

  • HLPU@xanga

"uniquely blessed"?  No.  Otherwise would not the Roman Empire, which became the 'Holy Roman Empire', have been more uniquely blessed?  Stating there is a "Creator" does not always mean the one true God.  There are religions who have such a point of view and yet deny God as He has revealed Himself in scripture and through His Son.  Also, where does God provide 'the pursuit of happiness' as a right?  Perhaps I am missing that in scripture and would apprecaite someone pointing it out (with my thanks). Now, individual people are blessed; but governments?

  • scrambledmegzntoast@hardestlevel

    @HeartOfPandora@xanga -

That doesn't mean the majority of them
wanted freedom to be a different denomination of Christian, it means
that most people wanted the freedom to not be Xtian AT ALL.

Hmmm. What is your basis for this? Can you point to any documents written by early settlers from England that back this up? The vast majority were leaving the imposition of a specific state denomination (The Church of England) and we know from most of their writings that they considered themselves to be Christians. There is little evidence, that I know of, that supports many of them being atheists or even "anti-theists".

  • scrambledmegzntoast@hardestlevel

@sierrraa@xanga - As I said to @HeartOfPandora@xanga - , can you back this up? The whole "deist" thing seems to be popular, but there is little evidence that more than a handful of even the FF fell into this category. Can you actually provide any evidence?

  • too_pretty_to_die@xanga

to jump in on the atheism argument... i think there has always been a large number of atheists in this country.  it's just more acceptable to be public about it now.  i doubt any openly atheist settlers would have been treated well in 17th century Britain, let alone have been allowed to come to the colonies.

and to answer the question, no.  i would hope that God does not play favorites.

  • Iluffyewstupidwhore@xanga
  • JosephParsons@xanga

@sierrraa@xanga - Most of the Founding Fathers were athiests?

    Ridiculous.

26 of the 53 signers of the Declaration of Independence were ordained Ministers. 51 of the 53 were self-professing Christians.

I think we were blessed mostly because we kicked butt in WW ll. Following the war America really prospered. Also I think it was because in 1948 we alligned with Israel. But now things are pretty messed up. I think in the near future America may have to stand completely alone. Our power in the world is declining. We have a great president now who is very optimistic and I am optimistic. I think we lost our blessing during or maybe after Reagan left office. To America's credit He was a major reason the USSR fell. Things are different now. If you have lived as long as I have you may have noticed the change. For example satelite TV has a lot of immoral crap in my opinion people wouldn't have dreamed of in the 1950's. Maybe with Barak as president we can turn things around or at least STAND alone. I was under the impression Israel under King Solomon was the greatest nation ever. They were absolutely blessed by God.
