  • Do You Sing Patriotic Songs in Church?

    The Fourth of July weekend is about to begin.  This holiday weekend often raises questions in the mind of music ministers -- should we acknowledge this national holiday in our service? How should we go about it? Should we sing patriotic songs?

    What's the balance between recognizing a holiday commemorating our nation's independence, yet at the same time, staying focused on singing praise to Christ?

    Do you sing patriotic songs in church -- especially on the Fourth of July weekend?  If you're a music minister, how do you achieve the balance between singing patriotic tunes and worship songs?  Do you think it's okay to integrate patriotic songs into a worship service?

    @Pashe@xanga - The original topic, and the only topic relevant to my discussion of this topic was your inability to step into the shoes of other people.

    "Your" discussion has nothing to do with what is going on here.  I am only part of the topic because your poor catastrophically conditioned mind says that it must be.  The problem with conditioned people is that certain key words are said and poor person begins performing like a monkey on an organ grinders leash.

    That's what you are.  You've been turned into a little monkey who performs on command.

    America is exceptional.  It is the greatest civilization in history.  It was the South that institutionalized slavery.  The South was beaten to a pulp at the order of Abraham Lincoln, a man who understood the ideal and reality of America.

    @LoBornlite@xanga - Actually this is what happens when you don't study American history. The North also had slavery for a short time before industry grew. Also  George Washington had over 100 slaves on his plantation. Not only that but the largest slave port in America for the first few years was New York City, it was a national sin that both parts took part of. It was not just the south. Please read a book and stop being ignorant. I could recommend some but then you would think they were nothing more than some left wing conspiracy to hurt America.

    You are a racist snob pretending to have an argument and yet you are God's beloved daughter. I don't hate you and I don't look down on you. You are blind and dead inside and my prayer for you is that you find life. Live, live, live, live, live, live, live.  You have no historical data to back up any of your points other than nice rhetoric. I have actual slave codes, slave laws, the Constitution, the personal letters of Thomas Jefferson, and other leaders and the actual accounts of the slaves that survived genocide. You have nothing but rhetoric, you have already lost this argument and you don't even know it.

    The saddest part about your tirade is that it revealed how black your heart is. You had a chance to show grace and compassion and you couldn't do it. It must be hard for you to realize how little grace there is in your heart for yourself or for a random stranger. You are God's beautiful and BELOVED DAUGHTER and I am no monkey. I am God's BELOVED SON. Please remember that when you address me further. One last word, I love you.

    You behave like a trained animal.  Get your mind back.  You are the one who dwells in the darkness.  I am American.  I am light and bright and blessed.  Join us!!

    @LoBornlite@xanga - You are way bigger than being American. The fact that you can equate America w/ light shows how blind you really are. I wish you would stop combining worship of GOD and a worship of a nation state. You have an intellect and a dead heart, live.

    @LoBornlite@xanga - George Washington was a very complex man. He was a war hero but he was also a slave owner. He was human full of all the greed and need for power that really created this nation.  I realize your reading comprehension skills are not that great. But you are a fool, God's daughter but a fool, let go and be great. Stop deifying our founders and see them for what they were, human beings that did much good and much evil.

    @LoBornlite@xanga - No.

    You are a racist snob. You are a fool. But You are also God's beloved. I wish to God you would grow up and stop being the first two things and embrace a destiny bigger than yourself and your own accursed ego.

    • About Me: Hi, I'm Amanda. I'm an English major in the Journalism Certificate program at the University at Buffalo. I love to write, and through this Revelife blog, hope to integrate that passion with my other love, my Catholic Christian faith. I'm a big fan of Christian music...Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith, Stephen Curtis Chapman..you name it. I sing at my churches both at home and school and am a firm believer in "He who sings prays twice." Most importantly, throughout the last few years, I've deepened in my faith and come to know that God will always be there to guide my steps. I often live by this passage and trust its message: "'For I know the plans I have for you,'" declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."' - Jeremiah 29:11
