So, What Do We Do When We Get to Heaven?
Everyone supposedly wants to go up to heaven with God. Heaven is supposed to be the place of eternal peace and happiness, but what do you do there? What do you eat? What do you wear?I know we're supposed to turn into fluffy-winged-harp-carrying-happy-happy-angels, but what do you do? How long are the days? It's supposed to be beautiful, but don't you get tired of the same landscape?
I know I'm supposed to go if I'm a Christian, accepted Jesus Christ into my heart, and believe that he is my lord and savior. No matter what my sins are, I'm forgiven and allowed in. But what happens if Saint Peter looks at me and looks back at the party list and says, "You have to wait a bit in purgatory"?
I always imagined heaven as a start over kind of thing. I become a child and play with Jesus forever, and all the saints tell me stories and what not. But when do you get tired of the same thing everyday? How is it that God has all the archangels that fight and then he has us? I've always wanted to be a warrior of God like Joan of Arc and Saint Michael, but when do I get called?
I know this is just a bunch of questions, but that's the only way I can blog about heaven: constant questions. My granny supposedly went to heaven once when her heart stopped beating during childbirth with my mom. She explained it as wonderful singing, Psalm 23, and beauty beyond your mind. That doesn't help me, Granny. But it made me stop crying at her funeral. I wanna know what it's like, because I don't get it. I know you don't have to get it, but all I can think is 'I can fathom that, but what can i do'?
Do you get what heaven is supposed to be like?

I've never understood myself, but recognized it as something too great to know.
All we think about with our finite minds is time. Time rules us so we'll naturally think about what's going to happen in heaven and how long the "days" will be and etc., etc. If you think too far into the eternal aspect of heaven you'll probably get a major headache or have your mind blown, or both. Something tells me that we'll have different mindsets once we're there and we won't have these same questions.
"Eternal Life is to Know the Father"-- John 17. Hope it helps.
Heaven is a place where we worship God
eternity isn't anything we can wrap our heads around. eternity is the amount of faces on a circle... infinite. it's just... it's impossible. all the facets of God's being and heaven are on a completely different plane of existence than this one.
and i don't think that heaven will be sandal wearing, robe bearing guys in beards walking around. in my mind, heaven will be governed by science and the Master Scientist- the creator of all. i plan on being God's chief engineer and boldly exploring the cosmos of heaven for all eternity... what a glorious eternity it would be.
no, but guess it will be found out when we get there.
boredum
it's going to b the best thing that's ever happened to us...but we don't know a whole lot about it other than it's going to b a place were we get to truly worship Christ fully and eternally..and i can't wait to go!
I think the first thing we can probably say about not only heaven, but death in general, is destruction of the concept of time. Supposedly the soul is eternal, but we all know that the body is burdened with hours, minutes, and seconds. So what will we do "everyday"? There is no day. There will just be a now, right here in this moment.
Idk what heaven will be like. But I guess it'll be like closing this door and opening the next.
When you cease to exist there will be nothing. No memories. Nothing to hope for. Nothing to dream of or cry about. Just. Nothing.
Do you get what heaven is supposed to be like?
No. I Cor. 2:9 - "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him."
Sorry to break it to you, but there is no Heaven.
I have no idea. I seriously think about this one a ton myself. I can't sit right with the idea that we all turn into children. I can't imagine my parents and I being the same age, and all of that. Plus I always wonder, since we're going to be there for the rest of eternity, we'll probably meet everyone and be friends with them at some point, so wouldn't we get bored when we couldn't find anyone new?
I'm going to just assume that it's kind of like real life.. except somehow not.. Blah. No clue.
hONEStly i hAVE tHE SAME QUEStiONS tHAt YOU hAVE! i WONdER tHE SAME thiNG! i KNOW iM NOt REAllY hElPiNG YOU bUt thIS bLOG hElPEd ME fEEl BEttER! NOW i KNOW tHAt iM NOt tHE ONlY PERSON tHAt thiNKS AbOUt tHAT! i REAllY dNt KNOW WhAt hEAVEN Will BE liKE i GUESS WE Will bOtH SEE WhEN WE GEt tHERE :)
I think we go to live in the New Jerusalem - see Revelation. It's a city, the Father's house with many mansions. I think it will travel through the universe. I think it will be a lot like this life except without pain, night, tears, fear, etc. I think we will have a career; a job to do. I think there will be fast food restaurants. Everybody will be happy. But 1 Cor. 2:9.
let's put it this way... heaven is not just a destination of bliss... heaven or as deepestrecesses put it; eternal life, is all about a relationship... this relationship is a redeemed one
so no, there are no wings on the saints who look like wierd chubby babies playing harps all day long for the rest of eternity.... THAT'S HELL...
heaven is about an eternal relationship where there is no pain, hunger, disease, torment, strife... just sheer perfection where you are doing what you are created to do... to worship and serve Jesus... with joy and gladness because for the rest of eternity, you're doing what you're created to do...
how do we get there is what the title of the post poses... well... that's easy... If we repent of our sins, entrust our existance to Christ, realize His massive gift of grace and trusting in the work that He did when He hung on the cross and believing that His death was the legal binding transactional payment where God clears our name from all the sins that offends Him past/present/future and then embrace the fact and believing the fact that Jesus rose from the dead 3 days later and calling out to Him for salvation is how you get there... so really if Peter said "No grace for you; PURGATORY!" if Jesus truly is YOUR Lord, Savior, and Treasure... Jesus trumps Peter anyways... and Jesus Himself said if you call me to be those things (Lord, Savior, Treasure)... you're in... no questions asked... no holds barred... you get heaven and you get Jesus for eternity...
and if you ask me... I wouldn't want anything else... and nothing has been the same since He became my Lord, Savior, and my ultimate Treasure...
My understanding of eternity and life after death is that, like the current creation, it is just to demonstrate the nature of God to us. Just like the present universe declares His Glory so will the next. We won't be bored because we'll have forever to deepen and broaden our understanding of God and each other infinitely because God is infinite and souls are eternal.
Somebody said to me that he is excited about heaven because it means he will be able to have a spiritual intimacy with every person there that is perfect and eternal, you never have to fear or mistrust another person.
C.S. Lewis's "further up and further in" image in The Last Battle is one of the most attractive presentations of heaven in literature. Our most delightful and profound experiences on earth are tiny whiffs of what heaven will be like. I expect that our curiosity and creativity will be truly unleashed there.
Maybe it's like one super long fun day... the kind of day you never want to end because you're having so much fun and the cool thing is it never will end because there's no time. yeah... that's what it's going to be like.... i think anyway. idk, of course. all i know is i want to have a cookout with Jesus. i want to cook with Him and laugh and eat with Him. I'm Sicilian... food runs through my blood.
Jesus has prepared a place in Heaven for all who believe in Him. Angels worship God there. It is made of gold. There is a beautiful river with the tree of life. God is the light. There are no liars or wicked people, no more tears or death. Everyone in the Lamb's Book of Life is there. Thats what you get when you go to Heaven.
The Christian notion of heaven is completely unappealing to me. It sounds boring... especially if it's for eternity.
I don't have to worry, though. You guys wouldn't let me in.
Great topic! I have always thought this, and what a lame existence it would be. If your in heaven you cant exactly just go around and sin, so who would you really be? A huge part of you is your "fallen" nature, so who and what exactly would you be? If you divorce this huge part of you, are you even yourself anymore? What kind of life would it be if you were not allowed to sin?
I will also never know, just as Christians wont know about X religions heaven/hell.
shalom,

@leadworshipper82 - You know, you put it very well, thank you.
I love this topic. As I get older, I long more and more for Heaven. I think Heaven is going to be alot like life today, except WITHOUT sin. We will be who we are, except without sin. We will know our friends and family - but without sin.
But there is a difference between the "intermediate" heaven (where people are now awaiting the New Heaven and the New Earth) and the coming Kingdom - the New Heaven and the New Earth. I'm looking forward to working in God's service, doing things I may never get around to doing here, I'm looking forward to fellowship with Jesus Christ, and all the saints of all time, I'm looking forward to exploring God's universe, and for seeing the vast expanses of His Creation........ I'm looking forward to fellowship with so many different people - to be reunited with loved ones, and to speak with people like Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Moses, Jacob, King David, King Solomon, Deborah, Mary the mother of Jesus, Martha/Mary/Lazarus, Peter, Paul, the author of Hebrews, the apostle John, and soooo many others! - I look forward to feasting with them over lavish feasts set for us. I look forward to walking the golden streets of the New Jerusalem - the capital city of the New Earth -- I look forward to seeing the rooms that Jesus is preparing for me now, I look forward to being sinless and I look forward to worshiping God in truth - finally knowing the reality of God's Word and His True Doctrines!!
Heaven is going to be anything BUT boring. It will be a place of unimagined and unsurpassed glory and creativity and activity. I believe we will continue to make and create things in glory of our Creator. I believe we will be endowed with new and special gifts. (just imagine what we will be able to do!! If we, in our sinful state, have been able to produce and create things like we can now, what will we be able to do in perfectness??) I believe we will see colours we didn't know existed. I believe we will see species we didn't know existed. We will never grow tired of eternity --- there will always be something more to see, something new to know, somewhere new to explore!
All the joy we think we have now - imagine that 100 times greater forever! Our life here is but a shadow of what is coming. The things that make us happy and the joy we feel here over things and people that are sinful ........imagine happiness and joy and sinlessness!!
Of course, it all rests on accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour. @leadworshipper82 explained it very well. The coming Kingdom is REAL, more real than you can imagine. And it's reserved for believers in the Lord. And if Heaven is real, Hell is also real. That should scare the living daylights out of anyone. A good understanding of hell- God's wrath against those who refuse to accept Him, who scoff at Him and His Word, who deride Him and His people .....an eternity of damnation and separation from God and everyone else - total isolation ......... who'd want to be there???
I highly recommend reading the book "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn. It will challenge your preconceived ideas about Heaven. It will make you think and make you long for a Heaven that is described in the Bible. And then, if you have time, read his novels "Deadline" "Dominion" and "Deception" .....also "Safely Home" is another good one. Yes, he admits that not everything he writes is perfect, and that some of it is speculation. He has a fairly good understanding of hell as well. But when you read his book "Heaven" and follow his logical understanding of the many Scripture passages that speak of Heaven, of eternity, and yes, of Hell ....he will make you think, and perhaps you will agree with most of what he writes. Even if you're skeptical, read it. Even if you believe neither of these places exists - read it for fun. It may change you.
