Who are You Glorifying with Your Talents?
Everyone has a talent. It may be singing, playing an instrument, taking pictures, or maybe something along the lines of being a good listener. Whatever it may be, do you put it to use? Is it for the kingdom of God, yourself, or maybe even both? After thinking about it, I was reminded of Matthew 25:14-30.
What is your talent and how to do you use it? Do you bring glory to God?

I appreciate the encouragement to go on and act in a Godly mannor in all that we do and with all that we are. In Matthew 22:36 and Deut 7:4-5 we are told to Love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind-- so all that we are, we are to God.

It may not be worth mentioning, I don't know, but this scripture was pretty missused.

Talent, in this verse, does not equal skill or ability.

Certainly I agree that God has called us to be Holy and Righteous in all that we do (including if we sing or dance or play tennis, lol) but to equate a scripture that is talking about the God-given gifts with simple "ability" seems to far from Jesus' intended word, keeping in mind that vs 30 goes on to say if you do not put to use the "talents" God gives to you, you will be thrown out into darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Wouldn't that imply that I'm good at singing, and I don't sing, I'm going to hell?

This is a good question and worth anyone considering. A lot of people will say that in the passage, "talent" did not mean what you write of. But the differing meaning of the words should not be lost on us.

I wrote an article that might interest artists concerning this question. It is on my xange here.
As for me, I play guitar a compose music. In reference to the article I linked above, I would say that glorifying God with your are is an internal rather than an external thing. Barring anything God specifically forbids, simply breathing is glorifying to God as it is only by Him are we sustained, especially in a sinful state.

I do glorify the Lord with my talent of writing. But here is my question... Is it possible and righteous to glorify God with your talent AND make a living with it as well?

I've been told I'm a good writer, but to be honest, I don't really like to do it. I have yet to even post a blog. Lol.

@scrambledmegzntoast@hardestlevel - That is true. I know it's not directly referring to the talents I'm talking about, but it still gets the point across, or so I think. You can either bury what God has given you or you can use it.

@poetesshue@xanga - I think it depends on how it's being used. Something that God has blessed me with is being good with kids. I'm a pre-school teacher. I get paid for that. So, it's possible.

I think it is your attitude. If you are going to use your talents for yourself and never do anything for God then you are not using your talents to glorify God. He does not want us to use our talents for our own gain. The servant who hid his talent seemed to have no concern for what the master gave him. He was too worried about what others would think of him. He did not have any interest in pleasing the master but instead the lazy servant wanted to please himself.
I have used my teaching talents teaching Junior Church and I am also cultivating my gift by going to school. I don't think there is anything wrong with getting paid for using your talents.
